This book includes stage scenes of all types - from serious to comic to shades in between - to provide a varied, dramatic challenge for any actor/ess: professional, student or amateur. Here's an invaluable resource for auditions, acting classes, competitions and rehearsals. I've just won my first major acting role using one of the scenes from Paul Boakye, so quite apart from the other great pieces of writing in this book, his "Wicked Games" is my personal favourite. I'm sure I'm not the only reader to be squirming hotly in my seat as Helen and Leo flirt over their Tequila. Cos "Well, I would bet ... (Pulls out a cigarette and lights it to smoke.) That three Tequila Slammers are probably equivalent to one incredible orgasm. But ... I'd also bet that bad sex isn't even equivalent to one Tequila Slammer. Tequila Slammer is still better than bad sex." Some great writing, very funny, and great news for actors. Thanks.

Roadside Bombs and Democracy Review

Roadside Bombs and Democracy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
William Little is a lucky man. He is alive to tell this story - even though he paid an enormous price in personal well-being and time away from his family. We are fortunate that Little, badly wounded in Iraq, has written this tidy little book. Although there's been a lot of press about the use of security contractors to supplement military resources and support business activities in a very dangerous country, this is the first book that I've read that explores what it was like for the security officers themselves.
Roadside Bombs and Democracy begins with the author's first experience as a security contractor in Kosovo. He explains that he had the necessary skills, the desire to help, and an understanding family. For a man of his age, in good health, and with a strong resume in law enforcement, the money was excellent and it seemed like a good way to make a meaningful contribution to the War on Terror. His time in Kosovo was an interesting foray into a different culture dealing with the impact of war. While not safe, it did not truly prepare Little for the chaos of Iraq - but it did give him the opportunity to work there. Iraq was alluring because it seemed to be the very place where people like Little were needed and of course, the salary was commensurate with that need.
The author tells his story with little elaboration - perhaps because Iraq needs no frills. Although this memoir has the feel of a journal, it is still a page turner. The red and brown cover with a picture of a burning Hummer and the title itself gives the reader some idea of what is coming, yet the casual description of daily life is both mundane and gripping. First at a Baghdad compound where the author is assigned to examine hundreds of Iraqi citizens eager to get very dangerous jobs as Iraqi police officers - and then later as support for various police stations in Basra, Little is alert and wary -- and the reader doubts that such a wise man would be a victim through carelessness. Then, as the story develops, the readers realize that no one is safe in such a situation. We also see a growing sense of disillusionment in the author. Like many military veterans report, he'd gone to work in this environment hoping to make a difference - and eventually the enormity of the problems begin to overwhelm and frustrate even the most patience, pragmatic, and determined. A feeling also overwhelms the readers that perhaps the author's luck has run out - just about the time that it does.
A well-written and personal view of war from a non-traditional source that drives home the problems in Iraq - and definitely worth a read!

They say your life can change in an instant; well, mine changed in a brilliant, almost blinding flash of orange and red fire. The sound was almost deafening. I remember thinking, That was a big one. Then I realized we had been hit. Smoke and dust filled the vehicle; the smell and taste of the explosives filled my nose and mouth. The vehicle stalled from the concussion, and it took a few seconds to clear the cobwebs from my mind; everyone else was quiet for a brief moment. Roadside Bombs and Democracy is a down-to-earth story about one American police officers experiences as an advisor in Kosovo and Iraq. It gives a ground-floor look at the duties and experiences of a former cop working on the front lines, training and advising police officers in countries torn by war, ethnic, and religious strife. Roadside Bombs and Democracy is filled with awe-inspiring stories that will bring awareness to the American public concerning the sacrifices made by both civilians and military men and women during the current War on Terror. With numerous stories from the battlefield, everyone is bound to see the patriotism in Roadside Bombs and Democracy.

I enjoyed this extremely clever book immensely; it had me laughing out loud at times and I didn't want it to end. Written in the satiric tradition of Jonathan Swift and Paul Krassner, Larsen masterfully blends together the best elements from Harry Potter and The da Vinci Code with Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. Much more than just a hilarious, sidesplitting parody, this wondrous and brilliantly-devised tale teaches young people about the secret culture of cannabis and psychedelics. The delightful analogies between the hidden worlds of magic and cannabis, muggles and squares, are unusually creative and highly insightful. Filled with lots of unexpected twists and turns, this page turner had me savoring every last word. I can't wait for the sequel!

The Little Girl and the Cigarette Review

The Little Girl and the Cigarette
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In an arch, assured style, Duteurtre alternates two plots, one of a death-row prisoner putting a cog in the legal system by demanding his right to a final cigarette before his execution and an adult intellectual who feels at odds in a world where children are worshipped as gods. Duteurtre uses these two plots as vehicles for his real agenda: to satirize modern day's love of political correctness, utopian-visioned do-gooders, absurd legalism, and a society so bereft of ideals and so soggy-brained that its only "religion" is the adoration of the child, as a sort of symbol of society's replenishment and renewal. The satire is never forced or obvious, as too many books that attempt humor are guilty of. Instead, the author effortlessly weaves his satirical themes into his narrative so that the book mirrors our modern day absurdities with crystal clear vision and gives us a facile story at once. As this is the first book of many to be translated into English, I must either learn French or wait eagerly for Duteurtre's other books to be translated.

A wicked satire about the chaos that results when there's a rule for everything.

In the over-legislated world of this outrageous black comedy, a death-row inmatebecomes a darling of the media-- and the tobacco conglomerates--after he demandshis right to a final cigarette . . . in a smoke-free prison. Meanwhile, a littlegirl accuses a petty municipal bureaucrat of sexual perversion when she catches himsneaking a cigarette. Incredulously, he realizes that in this world where childrenare not just kings, but tyrants, a cigarette could lead him to the electric chair.

At the cutting edge of European fiction, controversial young author Benoît Duteurtrecreates a world wildly askew, yet disconcertingly close to our own, in this daring, antic satire.

Soul To Seoul Vol. 1 Review

Soul To Seoul Vol. 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Soul to Seoul is a korean comic (manwha) set in NYC. The story revolves around a half-Korean, half-white teenager named Kai, who is a pretty boy and player in school. And he is being stalked by Sunil, a Korean foreign exchange student who followed him all the way to Harlem, due to a rather whimsical reason. Soon enough, we are introduced to Kai's best friend, a half-Korean, half-black high school dropout named Spike, who lives in Harlem. In addition, we meet Kai's family members, who are are all full-blooded Koreans, and thereby deepening the mystery of Kai's half-blooded heritage.
The story is rather confusing. It is hard to fathom what the theme of this manwha is: Kai's love life? His outcast status among his family? Kai's friendship with Spike? The story flies all over the place, and it is at times hard to handle. At the very end of the book, Kai declares his goal in life, and his pursuit of it sets in motion the story for the next volume.
The best aspect of Soul to Seoul by far is the artwork. Kim Jea Eun is an expert at drawing up pretty boys; the cover of the manwha exemplifies the author's style of artwork. And female readers will find this style very pleasing to look at. The scenes are set in Manhattan, and the backgrounds are very detailed. The characters are into hip-hop, and wear baggy clothes and earrings, etc. The surprising thing is that Kai is only 17, and most of the characters are that age or younger, because they certainly act more mature in a boys-in-the-hood fashion.
Bottom line is that you should buy Soul to Seoul if you like the style of artwork. But don't expect much of a cogent story.

Smoking Stinks (Substance Free Kids Series) Review

Smoking Stinks (Substance Free Kids Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Parents who are addicted to tobacco often wonder how they can have the moral authority to tell their children not to smoke. This book will help them keep their children from falling into the tobacco addiction trap.
This excellent illustrated book tells about smoking from the points of view of a girl and her grandfather. The information from the grandfather is particularly compelling. He explains to his granddaughter that he still smokes because he is addicted and has tried many times to stop. He expresses anger that he is addicted. and uses this to explain why his granddaughter should never start. The granddaughter observes people smoking and chewing tobacco. Her observations and the illustrations convey the "yuckiness" of tobacco.
Between the girl's observations and the grandfather's discussion, children are experience both the short and long term effects of smoking.
This book should be interesting and accessible to elementary school and middle school-aged children and adolescents.

Steam in the Heart: Life and Times Along the Morehead and North Fork Rails Review

Steam in the Heart: Life and Times Along the Morehead and North Fork Rails
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the heyday of the Morehead and North Fork Railroad, the following anecdote circulated in Morehead, Kentucky: Murvel Crosley, president of the M&NF from 1937 to 1959, supposedly presented himself at the main offices of the C&O Railroad and proposed to give its president a pass to ride the M&NF in exchange for a pass to ride the mighty C&O. When the C&O president laughed and said, "But your railroad is only a few miles long," Crosley shot back, "So? My railroad tracks are just as wide as yours."
Fred Brown's new book examines the Rowan and Morgan Counties area through the lens of the short line railroads, particularly the M&NF, that formed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to haul natural resources out of the eastern Kentucky hills. Brown begins in 1887, at the end of the feuding era in Rowan County, when "Morehead was refinding its moral compass"(7) and portrays the boom-and-bust atmosphere of speculation involving both locals and "Wall Street plungers."
The C&O line already ran through Morehead. Railroads with the life span of a mayfly sprang up to connect with it for the extraction of timber, coal, and stone. The M&NF achieved that link in 1906, an event that permanently shifted the center of commerce in the county from Farmers to Morehead. The main draw for investors was the old growth forest. In 1911, a yellow poplar felled in Rowan County yielded five sixteen foot logs before the first limb. Another log had a circumference of 27 feet (15). According to a Dr. Evans, in 1907 Rowan County "shipped five million staves to Germany and . . . ten million board feet of lumber were produced every year from 1895 to 1911."(131) The discovery of modest oil and gas reserves, as well as precious and semi-precious stones, boosted passenger traffic.
In serviceable prose, Brown tips in the national and regional picture but concentrates on portraying features along the line in loving detail--the perilous construction of the Clack Mountain Tunnel, the towns, the industries of Clearfield, the floods that swept away bridges and track. Well-chosen photographs and drawings augment the text.
By the early 1970s it was over, the forests depleted, the Lee Clay sewer pipe plant, by then the major user, eclipsed by plastic pipe. In 1973 the ICC approved cessation of operations for the M&NF; the "last official freight train" passed through Morehead in 1985. (155)
Brown has assembled a great many facts--perhaps to a fault--to recreate the times. Oddly, an article on a meteor that fell to earth in 1902 is included. The book will interest railroad buffs and regional historians as well as anyone with a taste for bygone eras. It is a useful addition to the historical literature featuring Morehead and its surrounding counties, which includes Don Flatt's history of Morehead State University, A Light to the Mountains; Jack Ellis' local histories; James McConkey's Rowan's Progress; Yvonne Baldwin's Cora Wilson Stewart and the Moonlight Schools; and Shirley Gish's Country Doctor: The Story of Claire Louise Caudill. Brown earlier teamed with Juanita Blair to write Days of Anger, Days of Tears concerning the Martin-Tolliver Feud.

During the first half of the 20th century railroads were the life-blood of the country. They carried passengers and commerce to every corner of the nation. In Kentucky, plans were made as early as 1891 for a railroad to link Morgan County's coal fields with the C&O Railroad at Morehead. In 1906 the Morehead & North Fork Railway linked with the C&O in Morehead and the town soon replaced Farmers as the commercial and industrial center of the region.

Smoking Cigarettes Review

Smoking Cigarettes

Scheming doesn't pay. This is the lesson that Rashid Smith has never learned. Rashid is a 23 year old, inner-city gay male who knows what he wants and how to get it, which basically means by any way possible. However, Rashid soon realizes that the one thing he really wants most in life is the love of a good man.

The lust of Rashid's life is Troy. I use the word lust and not love intentionally. Rashid thinks he's in love with Troy, but it doesn't keep him from jumping into bed with a long-time crush. He will do anything to keep Troy from not finding out, including murder. Rashid lives in the fast lifestyle of gay Philadelphia where he participates in unprotected sex with various partners and schemes for fast money. He lives in a world of self-doubt and insecurity and only wants someone to love him. After the breakup with Troy, Rashid meets Calvin, an 18 year old high school student, who brings the love that Rashid so desperately desires. Calvin comes with baggage which includes baby mama drama and sexual liaisons with different partners.

Smoking Cigarettes was well-intentioned and character driven. The plot had many twists and turns with dramatic flair. The flow of the story was hard to follow at times because there were just too many characters to keep up with. I found myself flipping back and forth throughout the story because new characters were constantly being introduced. It was as if I was reading a tabloid story rather than a novel. Hall tried to portray a realistic gay lifestyle, but it confused the plot and the reader. Many of the supporting characters could have been eliminated. With that aside, I liked Rashid's story. He was similar to Winter from the Coldest Winter Ever. Rashid and Winter were both connivers and schemers who suffered from self-doubt and insecurity. Their lives were filled with constant drama and brand-new schemes on every page. Rashid's life was a new drama every time I turned the page. He was on an unending search for a new audience to entertain. Rashid's underlying insecurity sparked deep depression and never-ending questions of self-worth. The bouts of depression he endured were throughout the story. He just couldn't figure out that he was his own worst enemy.

The Ultimate Pipe Book Review

The Ultimate Pipe Book

"To paraphrase that venerable corncob connoisseur..." So begins the Foreword to Richard Hacker's book. And out of due reverence, I picked up my corncob pipe, packed it with my favorite tobacco, and began to indulge myself in a pleasure that I have known for years.
Hacker's dedication of this book to Joan reminds me that the first pipe I ever owned was a Father's Day gift. There was a paw print on the card indicating that our dog, Jacob, had given me the gift. I understood. It would be a couple more years before our oldest daughter was born.
Since then the number of my pipes has expanded and some have been retired. Before I read Richard Hacker's book, I knew that I liked to smoke a pipe. But my interest does not match Hacker's by a long shot. What might one want to know about pipe smoking? The origins? How to pick the right pipe? Pipe accessories? Collectable pipes? Hacker puts it all into his book.
Though I smoke a pipe myself, I have to admit that this book is by the ultimate pipe lover.

From the book: Feuds that once raged in the thickly forested section of East Texas, known as the Redlands, were possibly the bloodiest in all of the lore of frontier gunman. The Wall-Border feud chronicled here lasted for ten years; the Conner feud, for six - years of hate and bitterness involving a whole community and costing the lives of many. Confronted with such wide-spread involvement, the forces of law and justice broke down completely.. Called in to quell the disorders, the fearless Texas Rangers were helpless. To break the feud, the Rangers tracked killers throughout Texas and into New Mexico.

Auggie Wren's Christmas Story Review

Auggie Wren's Christmas Story
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Auster succeeded in what he attempted to accomplish: to create an unsentimental Christmas story. The story is surprisingly effective, in that the reader is not entirely certain of what direction the plot is going. This slim book -- little more than an elongated article -- is pure, forced action. One event closely follows another. What I enjoyed about it is the series of moral dilemmas offered up to the reader. Should Auggie have turned in the thief? Was it a wise choice to visit the thief's home? Should he have stayed with the grandmother? And should he have taken the camera that he found in the bathroom? If he had not done any of these actions, then we would not have today the collection of Auggie Wren's a-picture-a-day. Does the end justify the means? I read this book to my two sons and had a very interesting discussion regarding the choices that Auggie made. This book, in combination with Auster's "I Thought My Father Was God," makes for worthwhile discussions around small, fascinating stories. The beautiful illustrations by the artist ISOL merit close study.

Laura Bush: An Intimate Portrait of the First Lady Review

Laura Bush: An Intimate Portrait of the First Lady
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved this book. I bought this book after reading a library copy.
This book is based on interviews with Laura Bush's friends. It reveals friendships that are full of caring, insight, jokes, loyalty and sincerity. I would like to be as good a friend to the people I love as I think Laura Bush is to the people she loves. Laura Bush is still friends with schoolmates from high school and college! And they are very smart and also funny!
In reading this book, I found out that Laura loves to clean. One of her friends said cleaning supplies are Laura's favorite substances. No one in my family feels that way! But I find Laura's attitude inspiring, funny and helpful. Now, when something around here needs cleaning, I think of Laura's enthusiasm. I find that it is much easier and more fun to tackle cleaning with enthusiasm than to go through it with a dismal attitude.

I liked Laura Bush before I read this book. Based on the impressions shared by her friends, it seems to me that she always tries to do her best but without taking herself too seriously. She is smart, sensible, witty and also kind. And she loves to read!! And I love to read!! And I love people who love to read!!
I liked her very much to begin with, and having read the book, I like her better. In fact, I have added Laura Bush to my virtual team and I consider her an awesome virtual friend and consultant.
I wish her well and thank her for her contributions as First Lady. Thank you, Laura!
I think this is an excellent book, with revealing insights into Laura Bush's friendships and life. It is not a snarky critical book and I was grateful for that. I'm not interested in snark and criticism (well, hardly at all). I'm interested in encouraging people to be their best and to enjoy life. I think this book does that, and I highly recommend it.
