Nothing has captured our imagination and fed our nightmares since Sept. 11, 2001, more than international terrorism. The news are filled with "terror," and our government, from the prime minister to security experts, have repeatedly told us that for Canada, it is no longer a question of "if," but "when." But is it really so? This book debunks the system of fear and secrecy that has been used by the Canadian security intelligence establishment, with CSIS in the lead, to increase its powers to dangerous new levels, and raises the alarm over what this could mean for Canadian democracy. Starting from the training of new intelligence officers and ending on the deadly plains of Afghanistan, it shows that external pressure and a willingness at CSIS and other Canadian agencies to play in the "big leagues" of security intelligence have forced us into a "war" with no end that never was ours to begin with. It is an urgent call for a change of course before it is too late, before the very fabric of our society is harmed.

Reflections in Smoke: A Firefighter's Story Review

Reflections in Smoke: A Firefighter's Story

While a true story about people who put their lives in peril to help the rest of us is timely and admirable, this book sadly doesn't live up to potential. Mr. Wright obviously has a wealth of experiences to share, and there are compelling moments in his memoir. However, this rambling tome is in desperate need of a competent editor, something his publisher (1stBooks, a self-publishing house) should revise in their "hands off" policy regarding author's manuscripts. There are unexplained lapses in the narrative, characters appear then vanish, and the whole book just doesn't flow in a manner one would expect for a tale based on actual events.

Yellow Smoke: The Future of Land Warfare for America's Military (Role Of American Military) Review

MG Scales is one of the great military thinkers of the modern age, and this book reflects the vast effort of thought he has put into military problems during his career. His thesis, that in limited-objectives warfare, technology enabled firepower is the key way to destroy the enemy, and that close-combat maneuver forces are for 'findin' em and fixin' em.' To some degree, I agree with his thesis, but note that my personal experiences in Iraq taught me that A) clese combat with the insurgents is the most efficient way to inflict mass casualties on the insurgents; B) the insurgent's capability of hiding themselves in the populace prevents the use of massed fires and target detection, not to mention the politically unpalatable possibility of collateral casualties. As usual, MG Scales writes well, and thoroughly understands his subject.
