The entire world of pornography is a dream, an unreal fantasy that too seldom matches the beauty and intensity of sex in real life. Low-firing and Burnishing Review

(More customer reviews)It's nice to buy a book that covers what it says it covers. All too often I've gotten excited about some area a book says it will cover, only to find my topic of interest was mentioned only in passing.
In this book, Sumi covers low firing in a variety of methods as well as typical and more contemporary decoration elements associated with low firing. The book explains the modern pit firing methods using a variety of chemicals as well as the use of barrel firing, raku and incorporating sagger firing using these methods or in your standard kiln. Beyond this, Sumi demonstrates both knowledge and respect for the traditional methods of pit firing methods. If one is interested in this, it comes as no surprise that most books on the subject are not "how to" pottery books but rather books by collectors of traditional pottery. In this book Sumi covers the methods of the Pueblo and Mata Ortiz potters with a level of detail, with the context of other pit firing, that one can attempt these methods without feeling that you have to guess about some of the details or that you have to visit the Reservations to talk with potters. Though, if you have the chance, go to the Reservations and talk to the potters!

M.I.A. Review

(More customer reviews)I won't go into a detailed synopsis of the plot; that is easy to find in another review on this site. What I will do is tell you that Dymmoch has, once again, written a book well worth reading. The plot is very good, believable, could happen to you or yours. The characters are strong; these are people I can see in my own life, whose actions I find convincing. This is more a novel of suspense than of mystery - is John Devlin a good guy or a bad guy? Are his intentions good or bad? One does know the answer by the end of the book, and yet not until the very end. If I have any beef at all with M.I.A., it's that the ending is too tidy and life isn't always that way. But once in a while, things do work out and so even that is a very minor beef...certainly not one that would keep me from recommending this book to those who want something more than a bit-o-fluff in their hands.

(More customer reviews)I have to first start out by admonishing the politicking by both sides in the reviews of this book. It's unprofessional, very misleading and ultimately doesn't have any place here. And I'm a member of the site in question which is why I'm equally disappointed by the fellow SG-ers who've taken it upon themselves to throw off the grading curve by unobjectively praising the book when the request that was made by the site was simply to review it, not wax poetic about it.
Anyway, that said I liked the book. But I'd be lying if I said I loved it. The photography was all well and good. Good lighting, etc. But as one reviewer stated before me it was just pictures of naked girls. There was no real visual panache to it. In a way it seemed like somewhat of a self-congratulatory piece. Especially since all the photography was taken by Missy who's actually done some spectacular work that wasn't included here. Not to mention that the site boasts the visual talents of Lithium Picnic. As such this book left a little to be desired. And it may just be a gripe exclusive to me but what is with the postcard size, one image to a page format?
I did however really like the interviews and journal excerpts in the last section of the book. I might have interspersed them throughout the book scrapbook-style, but that's just me.
All told it was a laudable first effort. Improvements could be made, sure. But I think it sets a good precedent that I hope they expand on with additional works in the future.

(More customer reviews)I've been hoping for years that someone would write a comprehensive book on 2D effects animation. Something more than the little "how to draw and flapping flag" or "how to make a fire cycle" bits that get tacked on in other animation books.
Disney veteran Joseph Gilland has finally given us that first book dedicated to 2D effects animation. He's broken down effects into four broad categories (water/liquids, fire/smoke, props/solid objects and magical effects) and laid out the principles needed to bring them to life on paper.
Since every real-world splash and flame is unique, Elemental Magic isn't so much of a "how to draw" type book as it is a "how to approach" book. Gilland breaks down the basic behaviors of different types of matter and the working methods needed for an animator to capture the dynamic essence of an effect without being tied to a hyper-real style or getting bogged down in an unmanageable level of detail.
And this book doesn't solely apply to hand-drawn effects. Each section on a type of matter includes several pages on how to apply these classical animation principles to digital effects work. How to get the most out the computer's ability to do the heavy lifting on effects.
Hopefully this isn't the last book ever published on 2D effects animation. Gilland himself mentions that he's only scratching the surface with this book and that water, smoke or any other element could warrant a full volume treatment.
I hope someone takes him up on that offer, and with Elemental Magic we now have a solid foundation to build on.

This book is also about uncovering the intagible and invisible nature of history. An experimental history whereby events in the past may help us reshape the future.

On the Wall makes a significant contribution to the history of art and neighborhood life in New York by providing an undated and in depth examination of community murals. I am unaware of any history of community mural production in New York City, and this book fills that void. I love how the authors divide the chapters with sets of years and then focus on a group of significant murals. The reader gets a real sense of the aesthetic and social factors that make up the creation and reception of the murals. This is important because it situates the work in the overlapping worlds of art, community life, and politics.
The authors have done a significant amount of original research in the form of interviews. This is vital; this history is simply not available. This book will appeal to those interested in murals, art in general, New York City, urban expressive culture, and the expressive life of politics.
