Hank Winton: Smokechaser Review

Hank Winton: Smokechaser

My mom had an old copy of this hanging around the house when I was a kid, from when she was a kid. It tells the story of a young man who wants to be a forest ranger, specifically what is called a smokechaser, who watches for and puts out forest fires. The book is very well-written; dramatic, detailed, and develops the characters and their relationships well. This book always makes me want to get out of the house and off the computer and out into a park or forest, which is a plus.

Moe Q. McGlutch, he smoked too much Review

I had this book when I was 5 years old and always loved it. It was so different than a lot of the other Childrens' book in the fact that it taught a lesson without being sappy and the main character didn't survive due to his own stupidity. This book was one of my favorites and I was so happy to find it on here after all this time. It takes me back to my childhood. Thank you so much for it and I was extremely pleased that it arrived in such great condition. Thanks again.

This book is great. My daughter finds this book very amusing in some spots where the girl is so worried about things. She says "mom, if she quits worrying she will feel so much better." It teaches kids what to do if they need to utilize stop, drop and roll in a fun and comfortable way.

The Popcorn Dragon Review

The Popcorn Dragon

This is one of my three-year-olds favorites! We borrowed it from the library and she liked it so much, we had to buy it. Dexter the dragon learns the consequences of showing off, but also learns what it means to have friends. You'll read this one over and over.

You could hardly blame Dexter, ordinarily a well-behaved young dragon, for showing off when he suddenly found that he could make clouds of smoke. The temptation is irresistible, but Dexter quickly becomes insufferable. First he watches his own reflection in the river in order to admire the smoke. Then he puffs it in the faces of his friends: the zebra, the giraffe, and the elephant. He even blows smoke rings around his own tail to prove how clever he is.Soon Dexter has no friends left. He is a very lonely dragon indeed, until quite by accident he discovers a way his talent can be used to win back his playmates. This wonderful story -- first published in 1953 -- will delight both young readers and their parents, and so will Lisa McCue's appealing new pictures of this lovable show-off.

An eight year old girl meets a friendly dragon while on a beach vacation in England, and he tells her stories about his past as one of the companions of King Arthur.
I first read this book and its sequels, The Dragon's Quest and Dragon in Danger, as a child and am now passing them on to my own children. I can't believe they are out of print - any publishers out there?!

'You're about to join an elite team of firefighters!' Brouillard hollers over the engine. Your stomach feels like it's no longer a part of your body; you can almost hear your heart beating. Something inside you, a premonition perhaps, tells you not to jump. It's only natural to have second thoughts, you realize. You look down again. Can you go through with it? Did your training ready you for solitary treks through wilderness even the rangers never venture through? These fires are unpredictable - you might even suspect arsonists are afoot in these beautiful forests.

The Journal of Jesse Smoke : A Cherokee Boy, Trail of Tears, 1838 (My Name Is America) Review

The Journal of Jesse Smoke : A Cherokee Boy, Trail of Tears, 1838 (My Name Is America)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sixteen-year-old Jesse Smoke's Cherokee ancestors have lived peacefully on the land for generations. Jesse's own family once owned a large, successful, plantation, until the family was driven off their land by white people, who then killed his father. Now, Jesse, his mother, and his two sisters live on a small, backwoods farm in Tennessee. But even there, they are not allowed to keep their land. All the Cherokees are ordered to leave their homes and move west to Indian Territory, part of present-day Oklahoma. Those that refuse, among them Jesse's family, are rounded up in the night, their homes burnt to the ground as they watch, and then taken to overcrowded stockades to await their forced journey west. Jesse tells the heartbreaking story of the tragic journey his people come to call the "Trail of Tears." I reccomend this book to all My Name is America fans.

Toughboy and Sister Review

Toughboy and Sister
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Toughboy, age 11, and sister, age 9 have only their alcoholic dad to care for them after their mother's death. They get excited about going to fish camp, even though it will be the first trip without mom. Shortly after they arrive to camp, their father leaves. Toughboy and sister learn to prepare meals, take care of themselves, catch fish the way their parents once had, and reminisce about past times. One day the dad returns on the boat, dead. They are then stranded at the fish camp for many weeks; finally Natasha saves them. At this point, they both realize the tremendous positive affect being stranded has had upon them.
The book, in my opinion, tells a very good story. It provides a positive ending to a suspenseful, intriguing story. If you like survival stories, you will definitely enjoy this book!

Fun, cleverly written book that gets the reader involved in the life of a Medieval village. My 9 and 11 year old children, along with my husband have been really enjoying it. We're wondering if there are more like it in different time periods. We highly recommend.

The Dead Yard: A Novel Review

The Dead Yard: A Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I "read" this book as a download from Audible. Gerard Doyle is the narrator and seems to become Michael Forsythe. He's amazing. I hope everyone gets to "hear" this book and Doyle's reading of it.
This book is extremely lyrical and smart, drolly humorous at times, and viciously violent. I don't think I've been so tense since the basement scene in The Silence of the Lambs. The last 30 minutes or so, I literally was pacing back and forth, my heart beating as fast as it could, and my stomach was nauseated by dread.
I don't like to read reviews that tell the story of the book, so I won't go into that here. All I can say is that if you are a fan of great writing and good thrillers, and you have a strong heart (and stomach), then you will absolutely love this book.
McKinty is wonderful, and the McKinty/Doyle pairing was made in entertainment heaven. And if Michael was real, I'd be in love with him.
BUY THIS BOOK! Even better, listen to it!
