Auggie Wren's Christmas Story Review

Auggie Wren's Christmas Story
Average Reviews:

Auster succeeded in what he attempted to accomplish: to create an unsentimental Christmas story. The story is surprisingly effective, in that the reader is not entirely certain of what direction the plot is going. This slim book -- little more than an elongated article -- is pure, forced action. One event closely follows another. What I enjoyed about it is the series of moral dilemmas offered up to the reader. Should Auggie have turned in the thief? Was it a wise choice to visit the thief's home? Should he have stayed with the grandmother? And should he have taken the camera that he found in the bathroom? If he had not done any of these actions, then we would not have today the collection of Auggie Wren's a-picture-a-day. Does the end justify the means? I read this book to my two sons and had a very interesting discussion regarding the choices that Auggie made. This book, in combination with Auster's "I Thought My Father Was God," makes for worthwhile discussions around small, fascinating stories. The beautiful illustrations by the artist ISOL merit close study.

Princess Marigold Smokes Too Much Review

Princess Marigold Smokes Too Much
Average Reviews:

The author has keen insight into the vapid nature of upper-middle class America and the disastrous consequences without being preachy. The writing style always mimics Marigold's state of mind, sometimes dwelling on seemingly unimportant things, sometimes racing through things that would be a big deal to normal people, but always reflecting what's important to marigold.
This book grabs you from the beginning and holds onto you throughout mostly because of the multi-dimensional characters that you can never really tell if you like them or not.
All in all, a great read.

SUMMER of FIRE Review

SUMMER of FIRE
Average Reviews:

Forest wildfires burn out of control while embers of passion smolder in Summer of Fire by Karen E.Rigley and Ann M. House. This story pulls the reader into the lives of artist entrepreneur Kalina Dahl and her brother, Steven, a disabled post war veteran in a drought-stricken woodland near the northwest coast of Oregon.
Kalina puts her brother's needs and feelings before her own, and struggles to make financial ends meet while keeping the worry hidden from her traumatized brother. She is determined to shoulder the load until a mysterious new face in town catches her eye, tempting her away from her convictions.

Kalina's close friend, Jill, a smoke jumper, brings secret feelings of her own into the mix. Fires burn closer to home as a twisting trail of mysteries give rise to unexpected complications. It all culminates in a quick-paced turn of events that will leave the reader sitting on the edge of their chair.
The authors' attention to the feelings and personal nuances of each character is an understated secret of Summer of Fire. They peel back layers to reveal each person's depth, testing their inner core, bringing characters to life and drawing readers into the story as part of their circle of friends. In spite of gentle sensuality, each one maintains a high moral standard so I believe this story is appropriate for the Christian book genre, as well as for general fiction. I highly recommend Summer of Fire and feel it was well worth my money and time. I may even read it again!

Love and Smoke Review

Love and Smoke
Average Reviews:

Love and Smoke is steamy alright, fascinating story, complicated plot, great descriptive writing. However, the romance between the main characters, Riva and Noel, is seriously lacking in warmth. They have passion enough, the few times they are together, but the side character of Dante is far more intriguing. He has laughter and kindness, and his romance with another character was so much better.
We never get to know Noel well enough, and Riva doesn't know him that much better than we do. Blake gives more insight into the workings of Gallant's mind than Noel's - the villain has a lot more presence. The dramatic subplot endangering the main characters is a lot more compelling than the central romance.
Noel has looks, nobility of spirit, and exaggerated martyrdom, but his character is not magnetic. ...

Lauren, Ryan, and Simone meet again after the tragedy that brought them all together ten years ago. A serial killer is on the loose in Detroit, murdering men and leaving her mark, and each of these women has a motive to kill. Simone, a sexual abuse survivor and advocate for young girls, has begun to heal her wounds over the past ten years, but she is still trying to reclaim her life. Her mother, Jessica, thinks it's unhealthy for Simone to immerse herself into a world of pain and jaded love when she has yet to fully heal herself. A new, unexpected love interest only complicates things further. Ryan is willing to do whatever it takes to become a mother, even if it means betrayal. With her biological clock screaming and a shameful ten-year secret bubbling to the surface, Ryan is determined to get what she wants, but she may lose her husband-and her mind-in the process. Lauren, one of Detroit's most prominent defense attorneys, redefines justice and seeks a way out of the career that has left her feeling trapped and torn. She can't set her moral standards aside for a $400,000 salary, winning acquittal after acquittal for the demonstratively guilty. But how far will she go to rid Detroit of its criminal filth? As Lauren, Ryan, and Simone's lives collide yet again, forcing them to deal with the tragedies of their pasts, the three women regretfully learn that no one is safe behind the thin shield of a Smoke Screen.
