It offers a thoughtful, socio-historic, and humane analysis of the public health crisis of tobacco-related illness and the relentless search for profit within the tobacco industry. 440,000 deaths in the US every year ... the number one cause of death in this country ... and too few voices raising a public outcry. Schwalbe lays out the issue in clear, accessible, and thoughtful tones, and then steps out of the way, allowing his photographs and the voices of those caught in the wake of the tobacco story to humanize the issue and make this all too real. For those of us who are tobacco survivors, and for those of us who are not, this is a moving and needed book. Highly recommended ...

You will hear family gossip, share some good laughs, be edified by the "sage" dashes of wisdom and almost feel as if you could lean on the author's shoulder in a hard time; all this while learning about grocery budgets and the unfailing mercies of God and even how to make Best Whole Wheat Buns. You may laugh, you may cry, but you'll serve up and enjoy some good home cooking. Hint: order an extra book for your best friend!

Smoke and Mirrors is the second installment in Volley's Blood and Light series and is a fantastic improvement from the first. Whereas book one was like a chore to read, Smoke and Mirrors was a joy.
Not only is it great to see the development of character's through a series of books, it is equally if not more exciting to see a writer improve through each new work of art. Volley has done just that.

Volley was able to keep the story flowing smoothly by keeping the focus of danger and suspense simpler than she did in the first book. Though there were still many dangers facing Rue and her new "family", they were not repetitive in nature. Although I was a bit surprised that the relationship between Rue and Josh did not progress much further than where it was at the end of the first book. With that said; however, I loved how Volley used that in the end. (I even shed a few tears)
I am looking forward to the third and final installment in the Blood and Light series. I am caught up in finding out what happens next to Rue, Josh, and the rest of the gang. I am also looking forward to seeing how much more Volley has grown in her writing as well.

As she navigates her way through this, she is also coming to realize that Joshua Barrington has seduced her and perhaps stolen her heart. Please join us as you find yourself sucked deeper into an epic story in the life of one girl, who has good intentions but may indeed be her own worst enemy. Book two is more graphic in nature'with language, sexual situations, and violence. Peat Smoke and Spirit: A Portrait of Islay and Its Whiskies Review

(More customer reviews)If you want a taste of the Western Isles of Scotland then there is no better book than Peak Smoke and Spirit. Andrew Jefford has distilled a lot of history into these chapters, capping off each chapter with a tour of one of the seven remaining Islay distilleries, among them Lagavulin and Laphroaig. You don't necessarily need to know the Islay whiskies to appreciate this book, but it helps. Jefford invites his readers to have a dram of each of the whiskies in reading the chapters, as he taunts you with the many aromas produced by these fine single malts as they are drawn from their oak casks. In the tradition of great Scottish writers like Neil Ascherson and Edwin Muir, Jefford takes in the terrain of the island as well as its history, following rivers along their courses to the distilleries and noting the flora and fauna along the way, so that you get a sense of the origins of these famous malted whiskies. He describes the processes in the distilleries in easy to follow terms, along with illustrations to distinguish between the types of vats employed. It was interesting to me that these distilleries were rather small operations, keeping their long standing traditions alive despite the numerous ownership changes over the years. Jefford notes that it was often difficult to get the distilleries to divulge their "secrets," despite it being virtually impossible to replicate these tastes even if you knew all that went into these whiskies, which is why these distilleries have all struggled over the years to maintain their markets. Jefford also describes the various clan battles over the centuries for control of the islands, and how the Hebrides were virtually a nation of islands onto itself at one point, forming a bridge between Irish and Scottish Gaelic culture.

Not Blowing Smoke Review

(More customer reviews)I have to admit I was really concerned when I bought this that Cohen's style of wit and analysis would not translate as well to the written form. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the transition is made. At the same time it reads better than just a transcription of a typical WSD/WFD broadcast. The writing is tight and focused, but still allowed for the occassional trip on a tangent that better fills out the entire story.
"The Day My Dad Saved The FA Cup" is my favorite of the three, but they are all good. However, "The Day..." is absolutely classic. I still can't believe what happened and more amazingly I can't believe that they all got away with it!
I am looking forward to more from Steven in the future.

(More customer reviews)A fantastic read, although the subject matter of this novel is not my usual genre, I was adding a few books to my kindle for reading material to take on my three week holiday and decided to give it a go after a friend had recommended it. The story is very addictive and kept me wanting to read on no matter how heavy my eyes were getting into the wee hours, the characters draw you in and the storyline is riveting. Although the language is strong and the violence brutal in places it is done in such a way that is necessary to tell the story and does not overindulge by cashing in on over use of such material. The main character is a complicated man and left me feeling conflicted, on the one hand he can be cold blooded and ruthless but on the other, can show warmth and compassion to the young and vulnerable. This feels like a real insight into British cities and the underworld that controls them, cold, callous and dangerous. Brilliant..
