Smoking Stinks (Substance Free Kids Series) Review

Smoking Stinks (Substance Free Kids Series)
Average Reviews:

Parents who are addicted to tobacco often wonder how they can have the moral authority to tell their children not to smoke. This book will help them keep their children from falling into the tobacco addiction trap.
This excellent illustrated book tells about smoking from the points of view of a girl and her grandfather. The information from the grandfather is particularly compelling. He explains to his granddaughter that he still smokes because he is addicted and has tried many times to stop. He expresses anger that he is addicted. and uses this to explain why his granddaughter should never start. The granddaughter observes people smoking and chewing tobacco. Her observations and the illustrations convey the "yuckiness" of tobacco.
Between the girl's observations and the grandfather's discussion, children are experience both the short and long term effects of smoking.
This book should be interesting and accessible to elementary school and middle school-aged children and adolescents.

Well I'm 9-months a non-smoker and this book was one of several that was of tremendous help to me. As a 2 pack smoker, I never laughed so hard at the absurdity of my habit. This book was gentle to my ego sharing hard cold facts. I highly recommend this book even if you're not ready to quit. What was helpful to me was all the non-smoking material I read while still a smoker. The teaching made my transition of D-Day a little more tolerable. You will laugh a lot at the reality of a not-so-good habit. Whether you quit now or tomorrow, this book is a profound & educational read. A one-of-a-kind book using humor as the road to healthy living.

Aimed directly at everyone who is sick of self-help books and fancy diets, The Easy Way to Start Smoking is a refreshing and caustically funny read. With Thurberian wit and the peculiar satire of The Simpsons, George Cockerill and David Owen urge their readers to start smoking, encourage them when they feel like giving up, and promise great joy at the end of the three-pack-a-day road. They teach postures for smoking and eighteen different ways to offer a cigarette to a fellow smoker. For those amateur smokers who keep forgetting to light up, they instill discipline and responsibility through an elaborate system of jolting alarms. The Easy Way to Start Smoking will charm anyone who has ever wondered if smoking will make them cooler (it will) or provide more opportunities to dip out of work for some sunshine (certainly) or what it would be like to be ruled by the desire to stick a cigarette in their mouth every ten minutes.

I was somewhat dismayed when I read the other reviews as well. I have to admit that I am a former smoker myself, but did not find this book as "biased" as some have indicated. I am a librarian by profession and find this an invaluable resource when I have people who are writing research papers. It is chock full of information and very well organized. Certainly, up-to-date topics and statistics are - because of the fact that this is a book and not because of the author - not present. What is found though, are easy to read articles, photographs and a plethora of information that give one an overview on the many aspects of the tobacco industry. I reccomend this book highly and wish the author would update the volume.

The Gentle Art of Smoking Review

This book was published in 1954, is 177 pages long, measures 8.25" x 5.25" x 7/8" thick. Hard board covers and I believe was issued without a dust jacket. Published in NY by Putnam's sons. The book covers all the bases from the history of tobacco, to the history of the match, to tobacco for smoking by pipe, cigar and cigarettes, growing tobacco, cigarette manufacturing and pipe manufacturing. In fact much of the pipe manufacturing information in the book appears to be where Hacker got much of the info in his book The Ultimate Pipe Book. The little 1954 book is a great one and a quick read, will teach you thing you didn't know, and I would recommend it for those interested in pipe smoking.

Dissecting Antismokers' Brains Review

Dissecting Antismokers' Brains
Average Reviews:

This book has changed my life dramatically. I was deceived by all the misinformation surrounding SHS even though I realized that things just did not add up, I had no proof.
Thanks to Dissecting Antismokers' Brains I now feel totally vindicated and the sense of guilt from this pleasure is pretty much erased. The book is straight forward, thoughtful and well orgnaized. It states all the facts which are easily verified and when you are finished you find yourself wanting more.
When non-smokers read this book they, rightfully so, are outraged to discover that they have been used as pawns in a power stuggle by an elite group of people who are making millions from this. Factor in drug companies making millions from nicotine replacement products and most media outlets threatened with monetary loss if anything positive can be said about SHS and you have the biggest social lie of this generation.
What is happening right now in the free world is nothing short of criminal, akin to organized crime at it's best. Antismoking groups have no real evidence against SHS, just half-truths and outright lies through manipulation. This is racketeering on a world wide scale and most are unaware of this. The newly approved smoking treaty which just came into effect now holds third world countries as hostages who must comply or else. This is extortion and a violation of basic human rights!
We are all victims of these groups whose main goals are power and money but the biggest victims of all are our children. While money, time, media hype and other resources have been wasted on the BIG LIE the use of drugs and alcohol has sky rocketed in young people, STD rates continue to soar and poverty continues to rise. Antismoking groups are apathetic to these REAL problems while continuing to manufacture false data to reap in even more money. These are taxpayers dollars being wasted while freedom of choice is being stripped away.
Finally, for those of you wondering, I am independant of any tobacco companies or other interest groups in this area. I have never met Michael nor have I even had a conversation with him. This book stands on it's own merits, more than I can say for anything published by the antismokers. Read it, you will be amazed and you will even get a few chuckles from his light humour injected throughout. When you are finished send it to someone with some real political clout, someone who will ask the hard questions and expose these criminals for who they really are.

"Dissecting Antismokers' Brains" is a blend of hard science, linguistic analysis, humor, and easy reading that most readers will find irresistible, whether they smoke or not.A table filled with numbers describing the chemical content of tobacco smoke is followed by the comment that to get a day's Recommended Daily Allowance of cholesterol an individual would have to sit in a room with smokers for over 600 years. The author goes on to recommend a good prime rib instead. The scary picture of our minds being sculpted by those with money and power is softened by the image of a National Guardsman facing down a pack of Virginia Slims with a loaded M-16.And the statistics that always seem so fearful when one opens a scientific journal are pared down, explained, and presented in such a way that anyone with the beginnings of a high school education will feel comfortable with them rather than daunted by them. The various "types" of Antismokers and their motivations are analyzed carefully, and sometimes quite disturbingly, as the author builds the base for his meticulous examination of their arguments."Dissection" is indeed an appropriate word for what one will find in these pages, but it's "Dissection" with an undercurrent of personal touch and humor that does indeed make it an irresistible read.

First off, I am not a smoker. I have smoked cigarettes before, and enjoy the occasional cigar, but don't consider myself a smoker. However I was intrigued when I saw this book in Barnes and Noble this afternoon (I thought the box was very clever) and ended up sitting down and reading pretty much the entire book.
You don't have to be a smoker to appreciate the effort put into this collection of art, including old advertisements, photos, paintings, and quotes from an array of influential people from the past two centuries. This is not a glorification of smoking; neither is it an indictment. Rather, it asks the reader to forget for awhile their beliefs about smoking and realize what a large part smoking played in American culture as well as European culture.
Yes, smoking can kill you. But to immeadiatly dismiss this book as a nostalgic collection for the fiendish smoker is juvenile, and frankly, disrespectful; like it or not, tobacco has played an enormous part in this country's history. This book does a very good job of taking the reader beyond their beliefs to see a whole world of art, life, and culture that revolved around smoking.

Can you imagine Groucho Marx without a cigar? Do you remember that a few years ago smoking was allowed in airplanes? Can you tell when New York stopped smoking? In the not so distant past, posing seductively with a cigarette was de rigueur for Hollywood types. How many celebrities today dare to even hold one? No Smoking is a tribute to the 20th century, a century that created, promoted and glorified the cigarette and then suddenly declared war on it.

Slow Burn: The Great American Antismoking Scam (And Why It Will Fail) Review

Slow Burn: The Great American Antismoking Scam (And Why It Will Fail)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Though written in a conversational and highly accessible tone, this exhaustively-researched book exposes the wildly misleading conclusions drawn by the anti-tobacco fanatics, based on their junk science "studies" and other misinformation. One of the book's most useful revelations is that the "400,000 deaths from tobacco per year" factoid, which "everybody know is true," did not come from medical records or post-mortem examinations, but is rather a statistical projection that resides in a computer! It is no better and no worse than the assumptions upon which it is based, but any statistician can tell you that mere correlations do not prove causality. (For example, the fact that more people die in hospitals than anywhere else does not "prove" that hospitals are the leading "cause" of death!) I am a lifelong non-smoker, but when I hear the anti-tobacco nuts raving, I don't mind telling you that I feel personally threatened. Whose life is it, anyway? I'd like to tell them to keep their damned hands off MY health! For those who feel as I do, this book is a must.

"Slow Burn" is a highly personal but thoroughlydocumented journey by the author, Don Oakley, to find out the truthbehind the supposed medical facts undergirding the nation'sthree-decades-long crusade against smoking. He begins with a searching critique of the 1964 surgeon general'sreport, which set the crusade into motion, and details thereservations of the surgeon general's advisory committee regarding theseven weak studies which formed the basis for the famous warning that"Cigarette smoking is a health hazard of sufficent importance in theUnited States to warrant appropriate remedial action."It was that "action"--or, more accurately, actions--flowing from thereport over the past three decades that persuaded the author, aretired newspaper editorial writer, to undertake his book. A smoker ingood health for 53 years, he was appalled at the hysteria infectingAmerica as a result of an endless series of assaults against smokingand those who choose to indulge in it.In the course of his research, Oakley acquired, and in "Slow Burn"gives the reader, a basic knowledge of epidemiology and the uses--andespecially the misuses--of statistics. The book examines the mostimportant studies into smoking since the 1964 report and reveals thatmany if not most of them are fatally flawed by deep antismoking biason the part of researchers who are supported by abundant antismokinggrant money, much of it extorted from smokers themselves. At the sametime he reports on numerous studies exonerating smoking that thepublic has never heard about. The book is also infused with great humor as the author pokes fun atsome of the more ludicrous claims and almost superstitious beliefssurrounding smoking, beliefs that unfortunately are entertained bymany in the medical establishment as well as by the lay public."Slow Burn" is, however, an utterly serious work. Oakley realizes thatany attempt by a nonscientist to challenge "what everybody knows"about smoking will be greeted with widespread disbelief. But as heasks in Chapter 2, even if everything said about smoking is true, iswhat we as a nation are doing on the basis of it wise and necessary? As detailed in subsequent chapters, what we HAVE done has been toostracize and discriminate against a quarter of the population, tovillainize an industry and applaud its plundering by state attorneysgeneral and the plaintiffs' bar and, above all, to countenance thieprostitution of science and the corruption of the nation's legalsystem--all in the politically correct cause of a "smoke-free"society.Because of this, in a daring and provocative conclusion, Oakley statesthat "The 1964 Report of the Advisory Committee to the Surgeon Generalof the U.S. Public Health Service is one of the most insidiouslyharmful documents ever foisted upon a gullible public.""Slow Burn" is not written primarily for smokers (although they havebeen taken in by the Great American antismoking scam along witheveryone else). Nonsmokers who value both truth and fairness will findthe book an eyeopener and an alarm-bell warning about what theexcesses of the antismoking crusade could ultimately cost them interms of diminished personal freedom and responsibility.

The Cigarette Century: The Rise, Fall, and Deadly Persistence of the Product That Defined America Review

The Cigarette Century: The Rise, Fall, and Deadly Persistence of the Product That Defined America
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an engrossing, exhaustively researched, and very entertaining history of the culture, science, politics and law of the cigarette. While I knew that cigarettes were deadly, the persistence noted in the subtitle caught my eye. While I often think that "no one" smokes anymore, I was shocked to find out that over 400,000 Americans die from cigarettes each year! The figures about globalization and the massive death toll of cigarettes were even more astonishing and dismal.
Brandt's examination of the promotional tactics employed by the industry was particularly interesting. It is easy to forget that the Marlboro Man is not a natural American icon, but the product of an aggressive and highly calculated advertising campaign. I was reminded, too, of the disproportionate number of cigarette and alcohol advertisements in the inner city of Chicago--Brandt's analysis of the industry's interest in racial and ethnic minorities put this in an unfortunate context. One can only hope that policymakers pay attention to Brandt's findings. (Be sure to read the epilogue for an interesting and timely mention of tobacco in current politics.)
This book is a must-read for anyone interested in history, medicine, science, politics; in short, for anyone interested in understanding more about our past, present and future.

The Health Benefits of Tobacco Review

The Health Benefits of Tobacco
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr. Douglass is known for his anti-establishment hyperbole, and it serves him well in creating his saleable persona. While there are very good benefits of limited use of the natural tobacco leaf, this should not cause us to ignore the very real dangers of cigarettes and their additives. Not to mention the stench.
That said, my guess is that the previous one-star reviewer has not read this book. Dr. Douglass does a good job of presenting some of the fallacies of the anti-tobacco lobby and benefits of tobacco. Read the fine print and you'll find that he also does not approve of cigarettes and their additives or over-use of tobacco. He is quite harsh on the tobacco companies.
Benefits of smoking include the well-known protective effect from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. However, sometimes Dr. Douglass can gild the lily, such as pointing to the combination of higher smoking and lower specific disease rates in Asia compared to the U.S. Even though he ignores the fact to gild his hyperbolic lily, I am sure Dr. Douglass must be aware of the reason: green tea. Even the staid NCI (National Cancer Institute) has reported on the protection that green tea catechins offer from cancer. Investigations have borne out the fact that here in Asia green-tea-drinkers who smoke have lower cancer rates than American smokers, but Asian non-green-tea-drinkers who smoke do not have lower cancer rates.
All in all a good book, and it is good to have a doctor willing to stand up to the fascists, but you will have to overlook the hyperbole.

Empty Cribs: The Impact of Smoking on Child Health Review

Empty Cribs: The Impact of Smoking on Child Health
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is another book I was given so to interview the author. I found the topic interesting never having thought about smoking causing SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Did you know that a child should not sleep in the same bed as a smoker? Makes sense to me now that I think about it. The child would be breathing the toxic breath of the smoker. Hmmmm. Consider this also... when a baby's lungs are first developing, how difficult could this be when breathing second-hand smoke?
Dr. Dean goes way beyond discussing SIDS or the toxic effect of smoking on children. He also has chapters on why the big tobacco companies can continue selling their poison (Money Talks); the different states and how they are dealing with smoking issues (The States and Smoking); how cigarettes come from the tobacco being grown and processed to being packaged and sold (From Farm to Finger) and more.
One of the things in the book I didn't even consider was who are the biggest sellers of cigarettes (as of that writing) ~ They include Wal-Mart, 7-11 (is that a surprise?), Sears Holding, i.e. K-Mart, Kroger, Alberson's, Safeway, then the petroleum companies, followed by Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens.
He also talks about advertising in magazines, many of which focus on children since the tobacco companies want to get them hooked as young as possible. Magazines that accept advertising which are read by youngsters are (as of this writing): People, Sports Illustrated, Cosmopolitan, Ebony, Maxxim, Car and Driver, Glamour, Playboy, Rolling Stone and many, many more.
This book is a very good first step in researching how smoking affects you and your children's health; how the tobacco companies target their markets and what you can do about it.

Smokescreen tells the ugly facts behind what 'big tobacco' has done in this country and abroad. The book itself is a little dry; it reads a little like a documentary. This book is nothing but a survey of previous literature. It's an exhaustive (and I mean EXHAUSTING) list of every mention of tobacco in the notes, logs, and published works of early explorers, scientists, and missionaries in South America. There were a few interesting things - I didn't fall asleep EVERY time I tried to read it, just almost every time. It took me 2 years to get through this book. Don't look here if you want to understand the role of tobacco in South American medicine.

Velvet Glove, Iron Fist: A History of Anti-Smoking Review

Velvet Glove, Iron Fist: A History of Anti-Smoking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The history of antismoking began when Columbus brought tobacco from America to Spain - and the Inquisition clapped some of his crew into irons for smoking. Fast forward to that great public health promoter, Adolf Hitler, who tried to make Germany and much the world smoke-free. Fortunately for us, he was defeated by the armies of Churchill and Roosevelt - one a cigar, the other a cigarette smoker.
Tyrannical prohibitionists are at work today. Here, in New York, we have an ex-smoker billionaire mayor forcing poor smokers to huddle in the rain in the doorways. Elsewhere, my daughter just returned from dirt-poor authoritarian Turkmenistan where it is illegal to smoke in the streets. The fine is $50, which is about a month's salary for locals, and police enforcement is harsh. Why? Because their president stopped smoking and did not want to see other smokers from the window of his limo.
Snowdon writes in a engaging, lively, and sophisticated style. He runs through the scientific evidence: the addictiveness but also the relative harmlessness of nicotine; the health hazards of tar in cigarettes; the ridiculous claims about `secondary smoke.'
The anti-smoking campaigners started out mild and reasonable. They told us to be compassionate to fellow office workers in enclosed spaces. Emboldened by their success, they drove an ever harder bargain. The velvet glove was off and the iron fist of criminalizing tobacco was out. Their campaigns are very well documented in this book.
As a life-long recreational cigar smoker - as well as a man who literally risked his life for freedom - I read this book from cover to cover. It was like nicotine, which paradoxically both relaxes and sharpens the mind. My only minor criticism of this book is that it was written by a Brit and not edited for the American lingo prior to its publication in this country.
What next? What will happen with the Berlin Wall that had been built around smokers in this country, in much of Europe, and not to forget Cuba and Turkmenistan - what will cause that wall to fall?
I feel grateful to the author for his engaging history and wish every thinking person owned a copy. Perhaps that will help to begin cracking the wall.

Spain, 1493 - Europe's first smoker imprisioned by the Inquisition England, 1604 - Massive tax rise on tobacco in a bid to discourage smoking Canada, 1676 - Smoking is banned in the street United States, 1899 - Anti-smoking campaigners call for the eradication of tobacco Germany, 1944 - Smoking banned on public transport to protect workers from secondhand smoke In this revealing and meticulously researched account of an untold story, Christopher Snowdon traces the fortunes of those who have tried to stamp out tobacco through the ages. Velvet Glove, Iron Fist takes the reader on a journey from 15th century Cuba to 21st century California, via Revolutionary France, Victorian Britain, Prohibition Era America and Nazi Germany. Along the way, the author finds uncanny parallels between today's anti-smoking activists and those of the past. Today, as the same tactics begin to be used against those who enjoy alcohol, chocolate, fast food, gambling and perfume, Velvet Glove, Iron Fist provides a timely reminder that once politicians start regulating private behaviour, they find it very hard to quit.

Smoking: Risk, Perception and Policy Review

Smoking: Risk, Perception and Policy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Paul Slovic writes a compelling foreword to this persuasive and evocative book describing the health risks to smokers and their own perceptions of them. In it, he rebutts economist Viscusi's thesis that smokers make the rational choice to light up, having weighed the risks and benefits already adequately communicated to them by public health agencies. Slovic, unlike Viscusi, does NOT hold the opinion that the money spent communicating the risk of smoking to the public could be better spent elsewhere, and the studies described in Smoking: Risk, Perception, and Policy--undertaken by distinguished scholars like Daniel Romer and Patrick Jamieson--substantiate his position. A fascinating read that unmasks smoking a cigarette as political and public health crime. Loving it!

This book presents a counter-view, based on a survey of several thousand young persons and adults, probing attitudes, beliefs, feelings, and perceptions of risk associated with smoking. The authors agree that young smokers give little or no thought to health risks or the problems of addiction. The survey data contradicts the model of informed, rational choice and underscores the need for aggressive policies to counter tobacco firms' marketing and promotional efforts and to restrict youth access to tobacco.

Cassius Cheong's Positively Quit Manual: The Thinking Person's Guide to Stop Smoking Review

Cassius Cheong's Positively Quit Manual: The Thinking Person's Guide to Stop Smoking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Cassius Cheong's The Positively Quit Manual is a guide to quitting smoking for people who need a fresh, new perspective. I found the advice to be extremely relevant to beginning the behavior modification that it requires to finally quit.
As a current smoker, I have tried the following methods over the past 35 years:
1.Cold Turkey - Failed 5 or 6 times. I still have ex-friends that don't speak.
2.Hypnosis - I paid $100 for a short nap and a cassette tape that I listened to one time and fell asleep again.
3.Zyban - Or as my kids called it, "Dad the smoking zombie".
4.Nicotine Patch - Didn't faze my addiction one bit. It did give me a rash that I enjoyed.
5.Nicotine Gum - Smoking and chewing gum became my new addiction. I had to wean myself off the gum with more cigarettes.
6.Chantix - 3 rounds of complete and utter failure. I will admit it lessened the urge and I did cut down but in the end, it didn't work. I could have bought a good used car for what I spent on this.
7.Copenhagen Snuff - I felt sure this would work. Similar to the gum, I became addicted to both snuff and cigarettes. Finally gave up the snuff after I had to have a golf ball size tumor surgically removed from under my jaw.
So you see, this is not my first rodeo.
I believe the strongest part of this book is the way the author took the reasons we cite for not being able to give up smoking and/or the pleasant attributes and completely destroyed them with logic and reasoning. I am the worlds worst at trying to rationalize my weakness. This book gave an authoritive and compelling new perceptive on these so-called rationalizations. As the book states, the cigarettes are causing the problems that we pretend they are fixing. Almost makes you mad at yourself for not looking at it from this angle.
This book is just full of great advice. I am going to read it again and then set my quit date (while not telling anyone - again, great advice).
I hope you find this review helpful
