The BBQ Queens' Big Book of BBQ (Non) Review

The BBQ Queens' Big Book of BBQ (Non)

Okay. I was a complete grill greenhorn. I didn't even know how to light a charcoal chimney. But the Queens took me step by step through the process and, drum roll here, it's easy! And I've made some of the best food I've ever had from this book. My favorites are the grilled romaine with the Caesar dressing. Who knew you could grill lettuce, but it's fabulous. I slathered a steak with Porcini Paste, grilled it, and my oh my! I also tried their smoked tomato and basil butter when I got brave enough to venture into slow smoking. It's easy, too. Now, I'm on to barbecued ribs. If they're as good as the Love Potion for the Swine (don't you just love that?) barbecue sauce, I'll be in hog heaven.

Women under the Influence Review

Women under the Influence

Book was very 'DRY' in the reading. It is informative, but the way that it was written was a bit too much. Author uses long vague descriptions before you finally understand what they are trying to say. Like using 500 words when 10 words would have explained the same thing in a better way.

Julie's Gift: Memories of London Review

Julie's Gift: Memories of London
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just read 'Julie's Gift' written by Kevin Kirsch, a husband who is not a feelings sharer, but through this novella lets us all know (including his wife) that he does have deep feelings. It is a nice light read that may make you look at your unromantic partner a bit differently since it reminds you that just because feelings are not shared doesn't mean they're not felt. The plot is not riveting and you won't find a car chase, but that's the best part. It revolves around a couple's anniversary trip to London, England. The husband admits his idea of a trip is from the couch to the fridge, but goes out of love for his wife. It unfolds from there. The coolest thing about this book is that it was penned in secret by the husband and presented to her as a Valentine's surprise! Julie's Gift has great sample itineraries (how they actually spent their days in London) as well as the author's Top Ten London Travel Tips for the Guys (funny and useful list).
Not everyone is romantic or able to share feelings aloud, and many of those people are men. This book is a thoughtful and dare I say passionate shout to his wife to tell her that even when he doesn't say so, he is happy and lucky to be with her.

Sassy: The Life Of Sarah Vaughan Review

Sassy: The Life Of Sarah Vaughan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While Gourse's biography of the Divine One traverses Vaughan's life decade by decade, it does so in a very cursory way, so if you know anything at all of Vaughan's life, you've probably already been exposed to most of the contents of this biography. While this book is decent in its cursory examination of Vaughan's life and her wonderful contributions to American and world music, one doesn't go away from this book feeling he or she has encountered Vaughan on an intimate level...the Devil's in the details, but it seems as though many of the details that would have allowed for an ampler and fuller study of Vaughan on a quotidian level were not provided. There are some interesting photographs of Vaughan, her family, her friends, her coterie of fans and colleagues, included in this biography, but those pictures should have been in bold, beautiful color, full pages, allowing the reader to see the vagaries of Vaughan in all her glamour, sophistication, and wit. One will learn more from listening to Vaughan's vast recording history. Still, this book will be of interest to Sass's devoted fans.

Life After Cigarettes: Why Women Smoke and How to Quit, Look Great, and Manage Your Weight Review

Life After Cigarettes: Why Women Smoke and How to Quit, Look Great, and Manage Your Weight
Average Reviews:

As an RN and a recovering smoker I am always interested in material on how to quite the habit. It has been my experience that most of the "How to Quit" material is sadly lacking. This is not, however, true with Cynthia Pomerleau's fine little book "Life After Cigarettes".
The main thing that sets this book apart from the others is the author's willingness to talk about the elephant in the living room; cigarettes are an effective method of weight control. The weight gain that follows quitting is a major factor in the high remission rate of quitters. This is especially difficult for females in this culture of hyper body awareness.
Dr. Pomerleau outlines a total program of diet, exercise and medication that are the tools for the lifestyle changes that are the basis for changing any major dependency. But most of all she provides insight into the process of going from being a smoker to being a non smoker.
The book includes an extensive section of additional reading and resources.
Overall this is a wonderful asset for the woman who wants to quit smoking and contains enough good general material to be of help to a male reader as well. I would recommend this to any smoker and especially to the women who smoke.

Women started smoking in huge numbers in the mid-20th century, thanks to massive campaigns by the tobacco industry. The result has been generations of smokers whose health has been compromised and whose lives have been shortened. This book helps women understand why they smoke, how to quit, and how to make sure they don't start again. Smoking cessation expert Cynthia Pomerleau emphasizes proven strategies that demystify this most potent and pervasive of drugs. She explains the effects of quitting, how to do so without gaining weight, and the use of support systems and the latest drug therapies. Featuring photographs and illustrations, the book is divided into four sections: What Every Woman Who Ever Smoked Should know (covering the why); Managing Weight and Looking Great (personal transformation after kicking the habit); Special Concerns (dealing with relationships, depression, and other causes for concern); and A Lifetime Perspective (inspirational tips for maintaining a smoke-free life). Additional readings and resources help keep readers on track.

A Life in Smoke: A Memoir Review

A Life in Smoke: A Memoir

For the first time, I have a glimpse into what it's like to be a smoker and why they do it. I've never understood the call of cigarettes--the few times I've tried one, I haven't felt a 'rush' or anything compelling me to have another, just a smokey icky taste in the mouth. Julia Hansen's tales of smoking and how she used the habit as a way to keep people and emotions at bay touched me deeply. There's a twist at the end that's both not surprising and disappointing, but you'll have to read it. An author who has found her voice, I hope she writes more.

She-Smoke: A Backyard Barbecue Book Review

She-Smoke: A Backyard Barbecue Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I write online about grilling and barbecue (Barbecue Master blog and Yes You Can Grill web site), so I'm pretty picky about my grilling and smoking books.
She-Grill is one of the best outdoor cooking books I've seen and used.
Julie covers all the basics, so that your outdoor cooking turns out. This book does include recipes, but the the overviews and tips are the beauty here. Whether it's charcoal or gas or high heat on a grill or low and slow on a smoker, it's all here.
There are some family stories as well as history, so you can literally take this to bed in the evening and read and pick up all the info you need to know to rock the grill.
I only have a few barbecue books that I recommend to others. Most are fairly good and have some decent recipes. She-Smoke includes good recipes, but it's a good general guide covering about everything you'd need or want to know to be a success cooking outdoors.
