it is about time that a new anthology of america's true city of letters was published. this collection covers the biggest names in chicago writing (or any literature period) to the moer obscure authors. it's all here, novel extracts, poems, memoirs, essays, articles, stories, drama... and there is so much more to chicago style writing than what is in this collection, as is pointed out in the afterward. but this is an excellent place to start. i highly recommend this collection to everyone, and i think that those who love chicago or live in chicago should be required to read it.

This CD compilation 16 of the finest stories in the history of the famed, long-running radio show "A Prarie Home Companion". The stories come under four headings: "Faith", "Hope", "Love", and "Humor". Some of the best stories from this package include "Smokes", a brilliant story of a father's attempt at quitting smoking out of pure guilt. "Let us Pray" tells the story of Pastor Inquvist and the stir up he causes among his congregation. "A Trip to Grand Rapids" is about a weekend getaway gone horribly wrong. "Truckstop" is the painfully hilarious account of the events both before and after Florian Krebsbach accidentally leaves his wife Myrtle at a truckstop. "Homecoming" is the story of Karl Krebsbach and his nightmarish experience on the day of his daughter's High School homecoming. These and many other brilliant stories make an amazing array of the Lake Wobegon experience.

Prairie Plants of the Midwest: Identification and Ecology Review

Prairie Plants of the Midwest: Identification and Ecology

This is a nice reference book for an experienced field guide user. It is small enough to carry into the field. Be aware however that it is not a "beginner's book"--it is difficult to use if you don't already have a good idea what your unknown plant is. Also, the drawings are coarser than what one could wish for. On the plus side, the author adds excellent ecological notes on almost every plant. A useful glossary is included, as well.

Paula Deen: It Ain't All About the Cookin' Review

Paula Deen: It Ain't All About the Cookin'
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, if you have a high opinion of Paula Deen and don't want to know about her past, including lots of mistakes (by her own admission) and her bouts of agoraphobia (which left her housebound) and panic attacks, then this isn't the book for you. But there is lots to recommend here - not only are there wonderful recipes at the end of each chapter, some of which have become family favorites for us - try the chili or the ham salad sandwiches or one of her scrumptous desserts - but Deen holds nothing back and proves that a person who started out with nothing, had a low opinion of herself but lots of energy and gumption, was able to rise above her flaws and make it. It is inspiring and an amazing story, too!
I loved this book and found it VERY inspiring. Deen came from a rather modest background and she didn't have a lot of self-esteem. She married a handsome hunk of a guy, had two gorgeous boys and found herself in a mess of trouble, with a man who couldn't make ends meet and leading a hardscrabble existence. She lost her parents and felt lost, alone and very scared. Her home was repossessed. A lot of people would have given up at that point but she did not. Working nearly round the clock, she slowly built up her business.....very slowly, but steadily. But out of her adversity, one step at a time, she learned to make it. Along the way, she made lots of mistakes but she kept persevering.
In all honesty, some readers may have trouble with some of values and decisions made by Deen but I didn't judge her a bit. We are all human and we all have our ups and downs. I find her indefatable resilience to be amazing.

Do you know the real Paula Deen? You may think you know the butter-loving, finger-licking, joke-cracking queen of melt-in-your-mouth Southern cuisine. You may have even visited The Lady & Sons to taste for yourself the down-home delicacies that made her famous and even heard some version of her Cinderella story (a single mom with two teenage sons started a brown-bag lunch business with $200 and wound up with a thriving restaurant, a fairy-tale second marriage, and wildly popular television shows), but you have never heard the intimate details of her often bumpy road to fame and fortune. Courageously honest, downright inspiring, and just a little bit saucy, Paula shares the highs and lows of her life in the inimitable charming and irreverent style that you know from her television shows and personal appearances. She talks about long childhood summers spent in a bathing suit and roller skates and hard years living in the back of her father's gas station; a buzzing high school social life of sleepovers, parties, cheerleading, and boys; and a difficult marriage. The death of her beloved parents precipitated a debilitating agoraphobia that crippled her for years. But even when the going got tough, Paula never lost the good grace and sense of humor that would eventually help carry her to success and stardom. Of course, you can't get by on charm alone: as Paula has learned, you need plenty of willpower, hard work, and, above all, the love and support of family and friends to finance, sustain, and run a successful restaurant. In each chapter, Paula shares new recipes: there's serious comfort food like her momma's Chocolate-Dippy Doughnuts, Courage Chili for when you know life's going to get tough, Sexy Oxtails for seducing that special someone, and the recipe for her new mother-in-law's Banana Nut Delight Cake that Paula finally got just right. And you'll love the never-before-seen photos of her family. In this memoir, Paula Deen speaks as frankly and intimately as few women in the public eye have ever dared. Whether she's telling tales of good times or bad, her story is proof that the old-fashioned American dream is alive and kicking, and there still is such a thing as a real-life happy ending.

Palm Springs Weekend: The Architecture and Design of a Midcentury Oasis Review

Palm Springs Weekend: The Architecture and Design of a Midcentury Oasis
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While I initially bought Palm Springs Weekend as a coffee table book, it is much more substantial -- a great read, with the historical perspective necessary to appreciate the architectural legacy. Hess and Danish provide a tour from the beginnings of the desert resort in the 1930s, through the Hollywood migration of the 1940s and '50s and continue with the decline and then reawakened interest in modernism. And yes, it is a handsome book to have out for guests.
PSW earns high marks for balance, not focusing unduly on celebrity homes but instead providing a survey of significant commercial buildings, architectural trends and the personalities (Cody, Frey, the Alexanders) that brought the modernistic vision to life. Because of this, most readers interested in architecture will find it more useful than glamour-shot books of multi-million dollar homes behind gated walls. Several of the buildings noted are readily observable to visitors.
In addition, the authors illustrate the aspects of the culture that spawned Palm Springs. It is a remarkable journey because it is only recently that we have begun to view the 1950's, for example, as a period that has left us 'historic artifacts' worth appreciation. Less affected than neighboring LA or San Diego by overwhelming population growth, Palm Springs is something of a monument to the way things were. Hess and Danish do not overlook this.
While it is disappointing to see the cookie-cutter tract homes being built as the desert communities expand eastward, Palm Springs retains many of its unique homes, many of which are accessible to those of moderate means. PSW helps us appreciate the imaginative architects of the 'midcentury oasis', in their successes and even manages to evoke a bit of appreciation for some of the eyesores. A must read for anyone restoring or considering the purchase of a special home in this fascinating place.

Now in paperback, this classic barbecue book -- with 225 great recipes -- gives us the fruits of a lifetime of testing, eating, and enjoying good barbecue. Jeanne Voltz, one of the best-known food writers in the country, gathers the best regional recipes from across America, from Alabama, the Carolinas, and Florida to California and the Southwest. It's all here: barbecued ribs, beef, fish, chicken, lamb, game; seasonings and sauces that give barbecue its regional flavors; kettle foods and "go-alongs" (Garlic Grits on the Grill, Chile Cornbread); and "after the barbecue" dessert ideas (Toasted Marshmallow Sundaes, Peach-Blackberry Compote). And to get you started the right way, Jeanne Voltz outlines all the essentials: equipment, accessories, building a good fire, and cooking techniques -- including smoking. Laced with personal stories about great roadside joints and barbecue lore, Barbecued Ribs, Smoked Butts, and Other Great Feeds captures the spirit and flavor of America's love for outdoor cooking."Jeanne Voltz has written a definitive book on barbecuing. She understands the varying tastes and the techniques of each region she covers, and this is The book on barbecue. I love it."-- James Beard"No one knows the fine art of barbecuing better than Jeanne Voltz."-- Jean Anderson"A wonderful, no-nonsense book. So inspired, soul-warming, and professional is Voltz's whole approach to barbecue and those foods related to it that I think it's safe to say that you can now throw out other cookbooks you might have on the subject."-- James Villas,

Roger Maris: Baseball's Reluctant Hero Review

Roger Maris: Baseball's Reluctant Hero
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Maury Allen wrote a prior biography of Roger Maris in 1986, and now Tom Clavin and Danny Peary have written the definitive biography of baseball's "reluctant hero." Like several other individuals Maris has become more appreciated with the passage of time. Maris had people who would be remembered favorably and unfavorably in his career. Minor league manager Dutch Meyer punished Maris for a poor throw to third base by having him repeatedly make long distance throws to third base until Maris told him enough was enough. Kirby Farrell and Harry Craft would be remembered favorably along with Jo Jo White who taught him to pull the ball.
I graduated from high school in June of 1961 and vividly remember that memorable season when Maris challenged Ruth's home run record. Unlike today when players hold post-game press conferences the Yankees provided no protection for Maris as he was inundated with questions from all sides regarding his opinions on baseball and non-baseball related matters. Yankee publicist Bob Fishel said he never thought of having a press conference at the time following a game. It was baseball commissioner Ford Frick who taught the youth of America the meaning of the word "asterisk" when he proclaimed that Ruth's record must be broken in 154 games. Frick was a close friend of Ruth's and acted as a ghost writer for him. The authors correctly mention the unfortunate incident that took place in 1960 in Detroit involving someone who threw the back of a chair from the right field stands at Maris following a controversial home run by Bill Skowron. The movie 61* incorrectly mentions it as happening in 1961. I know it was in 1960 because I was sitting in the second deck above the Yankees' bullpen for that game.
Roger Maris spent two happy years with the St. Louis Cardinals during the seasons of 1967-1968 which brought the team two pennants and one World Championship. Following his career Maris was reluctant to return to Yankee Stadium because he felt the Yankees had lied to him prior to his departure from New York. George Steinbrenner convinced him to return to Yankee Stadium on Opening Day of the 1978 season when both Maris and Mantle would be introduced together. It proved to be a rewarding experience for Maris and he returned regularly after that as long as his health permitted. Maris said he suffered from physical ailments later in life due to playing with reckless abandon during his playing career by breaking up double plays and running into outfield walls. He said if he had to do it over again he would have been more careful with his health. Unfortunately years of smoking five packs of Camel cigarettes a day for several years did their damage ultimately causing damage to his throat. He quit smoking during the mid-1970s and passed away from cancer on December 14, 1985.
Maris won consecutive MVP awards in 1960 and 1961 and his defensive play is often overlooked in evaluating his qualifications for the Baseball Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, politics often plays a part as to who is elected and Maris was never one to be a self-promoter. It irritates me to know that when Mark McGuire broke Maris's home run record when he knew he was on steroids he still had the audacity to go to the box seats in St. Louis to hug members of the Maris family knowing he had passed Maris illegally.
I especially enjoyed reading this book because the year 1961 has special memories for me since my Detroit Tigers were a significant part of the pennant race that year. Maris never intended to denigrate Babe Ruth, but obviously he would want the record. The problem among Yankee fans was if anyone was to break the Babe's record (and they weren't sure anyone should) the wrong man was breaking it. They believed it should have been Mantle and not this interloper from North Dakota.
Whether you remember these historic years from the 1960s or not any self-respecting baseball fan needs this book in their library.

The definitive biography of the baseball legend who broke Babe Ruth's single-season home-run record—the natural way—and withstood a firestorm of media criticism to become one of his era's preeminent players. ROGER MARIS may be the greatest ballplayer no one really knows. In 1961, the soft-spoken man from the frozen plains of North Dakota enjoyed one of the most amazing seasons in baseball history, when he outslugged his teammate Mickey Mantle to become the game's natural home-run king. It was Mantle himself who said, "Roger was as good a man and as good a ballplayer as there ever was." Yet Maris was vilified by fans and the press and has never received his due from biographers—until now. Tom Clavin and Danny Peary trace the dramatic arc of Maris's life, from his boyhood in Fargo through his early pro career in the Cleveland Indians farm program, to his World Series championship years in New York and beyond. At the center is the exciting story of the 1961 season and the ordeal Maris endured as an outsider in Yankee pinstripes, unloved by fans who compared him unfavorably to their heroes Ruth and Mantle, relentlessly attacked by an aggressive press corps who found him cold and inaccessible, and treated miserably by the organization. After the tremendous challenge of breaking Ruth's record was behind him, Maris ultimately regained his love of baseball as a member of the world champion St. Louis Cardinals. And over time, he gained redemption in the eyes of the Yankee faithful. With research drawn from more than 130 interviews with Maris's teammates, opponents, family, and friends, as well as 16 pages of photos, some of which have never before been seen, this timely and poignant biography sheds light on an iconic figure from baseball's golden era—and establishes the importance of his role in the game's history.

Looking For Alaska Review

...and read this book in one sitting. Okay, it's short and incredibly good, which makes it easy to bolt down. But then you are going to feel like an idiot for not savoring the pleasure, and you're going to be bleary as hell the next day (if you finish it at 4 in the morning, like I did).
This book deals with the Big Ones: suffering, loss, and grief, but it does so with such compassion and humor that the net impact is uplifting. Even the principal turns out to be a human being. There are no cardboard cut-out characters here.
Be aware that the kids in this story do what kids actually do (smoke, drink, and have sex). If that bothers you, read it anyway. There are more important things in life than observing proprieties and pretending that bright kids aren't exploratory. You don't have to approve of these characters. It is enough to love them and learn from them.

Smokescreen Secret (Lights, Camera, Action Series)
Average Reviews:

Disaster lurks everywhere when McKenna and Jade James arrive onthe set of Thoroughbred Fever. When Jade is injured, her faith in Godis shaken. McKenna, determined to catch the arsonist, gets into deeper trouble trying to solve the mystery. Her life and her sister's are in danger, but the thought of Jade's "New Age" change in faith scares her more.
Written in the first person, it puts you in McKenna's place, seeing things from her perspective. Her half-truth's and bad attitude are things to watch out for, but at fourteen those things tend to happen a lot. So all in all the book in written correctly for young or preteens minds, it's something they can relate to. The third book is better in my opinion (which isn't much.), because it shows promise in her character and faith in God. BUT you have to read the first two books to truly get the entire picture. The series is good despite the lack of faith in McKenna in the first two books.

This book is just as much fun as books by DR.Suess and Shel Silverstien, while relentlessly driving home its point about smoking.

This book contains a selection of 335 original limericks for children and readers of all ages. The verses share a common antismoking theme and are arranged in order of progressive ages. Also included are a glossary of terms (particularly important for the inquiring minds of our youngest readers), a names-and-places index and several cartoon-style illustrations. The author is former pro-wrestler Lanny Poffo. He's funny . . . he's heavy-hitting . . . he's on a mission. Here's a limerick telling you why:Tobacco is so problematic, Diseases are so automatic. I've seen my friends die And perhaps that is why I'm such a nonsmoking fanatic.Poffo has found a new "cause for combat" near and dear to his heart and lungs –– "kicking cigarette butt" through his antismoking limericks for children. Inspired by author and fellow children's poet Shel Silverstein, Poffo's limericks deliver fierce but fun messages to kids, fans and parents alike. Here's a limerick (both educational and humorous) about some of the physiological consequences of smoking:Did you know that the first time you smoke, In addition to making you choke,It burns your lung hairs? And there aren't any spares –– Healthy cilia make those germs croak.Poffo's pro-wrestling trademark was to throw poetry-laden frisbies out to the screaming crowds. Now he hopes to convince kids to avoid or stop smoking. His clever collection of 335 limericks provides ammo to ward off peer pressure by tying heros, idols and legends to the nonsmoking message. Below is a sample limerick taken from the youngest target age group. Poffo hopes some parents may read the limericks as a bedtime story to inspire and teach their youngsters. For school-age kids, there is a glossary at the back. The hope is that schools may use the book as a tool for learning and improving reading and vocabulary skills.Mother Hubbard lived sadly aloneExcept for her dog with that bone. She smoked on the roadAnd in her abode Which reeked like the cheapest cologne. Finally, here is a sample limerick from the target age group 19+ years (college and university students):Relativity theories must beThat energy equals MC,Then needs to be squared.Smokers cannot be spared ––They forfeit their mass energy. A Savage Photographic Journey through the Smoke of Bong Load Girls. Asthe smoke begins to build and the sound of a bong ripples from across the room, through the haze, beautiful women ease into focus - smiling, inviting, ours.
The entire world of pornography is a dream, an unreal fantasy that too seldom matches the beauty and intensity of sex in real life. But there are some who treat sex on film as an art form to be enjoyed, not only onan obviouslyprimal level, but also on a visual and perhaps even an intellectual level. Like the blue smokeemanating from an exhaled toke, they rise to the top, float above us beautiful and dreamy.
Rob Rotten is one of the few people in the adult industry who can rightfully call himself an artist. This book not only offers a glimpse into perhaps his greatest work, Bong Load Girls, it also gives us a taste of the madness that happens behind the scenes: Rejections from offended producers/distributors, handwritten scripts, the note to self to never hire one of the actresses againand sketches of the dildo pipe made famous in the movie. It shows the project as both difficult and enjoyable and, most of all, a true passion by the man who put it together.
The porn industry's reputation as a dark and brutal corner of our society is not completely unearned, but it's people like Rotten who break through with magic moments that allowsus to enjoy and celebrate sex the wayit should be. Buy the book, buy the movie, smoke 'em if you got 'em. Even after the smoke has cleared and the girls have gone home, you'll remember that gentle buzz and know that everything is all right.
"The sexiest psychedelic rompthrough the stoner counterculture movement ever created, Bong Load Girlsis a trippy masterpiece. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!" – XBIZMagazineThis book has everything youcould ever want for someone who appreciates the female figure... And whoalso happens to smoke a lot of herb! – Skunk MagazineWe wouldn't recommend sex, drugsor insanity for everyone, but they've always worked for Rob Rotten! – AVNMagazine

You will relive moments that you have known because Jerry speaks in words that are a common bond to all who love and appreciate the great outdoors. My wife gave me the book on the occasion of our anniversary. I have since made it a part of my devotions each morning, reading the designated page for that day. Nothing has captured our imagination and fed our nightmares since Sept. 11, 2001, more than international terrorism. The news are filled with "terror," and our government, from the prime minister to security experts, have repeatedly told us that for Canada, it is no longer a question of "if," but "when." But is it really so? This book debunks the system of fear and secrecy that has been used by the Canadian security intelligence establishment, with CSIS in the lead, to increase its powers to dangerous new levels, and raises the alarm over what this could mean for Canadian democracy. Starting from the training of new intelligence officers and ending on the deadly plains of Afghanistan, it shows that external pressure and a willingness at CSIS and other Canadian agencies to play in the "big leagues" of security intelligence have forced us into a "war" with no end that never was ours to begin with. It is an urgent call for a change of course before it is too late, before the very fabric of our society is harmed.

I was somewhat dismayed when I read the other reviews as well. I have to admit that I am a former smoker myself, but did not find this book as "biased" as some have indicated. I am a librarian by profession and find this an invaluable resource when I have people who are writing research papers. It is chock full of information and very well organized. Certainly, up-to-date topics and statistics are - because of the fact that this is a book and not because of the author - not present. What is found though, are easy to read articles, photographs and a plethora of information that give one an overview on the many aspects of the tobacco industry. I reccomend this book highly and wish the author would update the volume.
