I was a die-hard smoker. If I had limited time to either go to the restroom or go outside for a smoke, the urge to smoke would always win. I tried the different stop smoking programs with no success. Fortunately, three years ago, I discovered the QuitSmart System. Finally a comprehensive program that really works! Each component included in the Kit - book, hypnosis tape, and cigarette substitute - provides its own unique value.
The Guidebook is packed with useful information and advice; it is easy to reference over and over. During peak urges to smoke, I would reread my favorite sections. There is a partial list of 4000 chemicals smokers inhale: arsenic, DDT, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide to name a few. In the section about withdrawal symptoms as your body heals itself, one point says, "Feeling dizzy or lightheaded sometimes occurs as your brain gets more oxygen than it is use to."Wow, this information would always kill my urge to light up!
The Hypnosis audio tape proved to be priceless. At work, instead of my usual, inconvenient smoke breaks (ten floors down and outside near the dumpsite), I used a portable player with headsets and listened to the tape. It was amazing how well the audio helped me to calm down and focus on my tasks. At the end of my work day, instead of a cigarette to help me "unwind," I listened to the tape.
The Cigarette Substitute's unique design allows you to adjust the draw to your liking; the deep breaths provide a calming sensation. Also, the Cigarette Substitute fulfills the need to do something with your hands and mouth--more satisfying than chewing a pencil or pen all day! During my previous attempts to quit smoking, irritability was a pitfall. A close friend once said he would rather I smoke than put up with my irritability! Along with the QuitSmart System, I chose to use the Nicotine patch. Irritability was never an issue. The QuitSmart Guidebook includes very helpful information on your medication options (from patch, gum, and inhaler to Zyban tablets), including a chapter on the Nicotine patch written by the Duke doctor who invented it.
This program eases you into quitting; it gives you time to prepare for your quit date. Buy this Kit now-even if you are only thinking about quitting or dread the energy and focus it takes to stop. You will discover a unique support system that may prompt you to set that special date sooner than later!

"Hyundai Smokes the Competition" by Alex Taylor III was the most appealing article in this issue, and reported on the 43-year-old company's best-in-class quality and aggressive volume goals. Its 21-story headquarters south of Seoul has monitors watching operations around the world from Beijing to Montgomery, Alabama - including its Ulsan, Korea plant, the world's largest integrated auto factory.
Combined with sister company Kia (owns 39%), Hyundai has 80% of auto sales in Korea, while U.S. sales are +7% in a -24% market. Kia has become the 8th most popular brand in the U.S. in only 15 years. In China, Hyundai is in second place, behind VW among international car makers. In 2008 it introduced the Genesis model as an upgrade from Sonata. This last December, U.S. customers saw the 2011 Sonata two months ahead of schedule. Hyundai is already 4th among the world's car-makers and was named years ago by Toyota as the company it feared most. Its goal is 6.5 million units in 2 years, vs. 5.9 million in 2009. En route, it is introducing a new model this year, the $60,000 Equus, to compete with top Mercedes, BMW, and Audis costing $20,000 more. Hyundai introduced its first hybrid last summer - it has developed lithium-polymer batteries 40% smaller and 35% lighter than Toyota's nickel-metal-hydride ones.
When Hyundai's current chairman took over in 1999 the emphasis changed from sales volume to quality - it adopted the Toyota Production System, Six Sigma, and implemented weekly quality meetings attended by the chairman. Hyundai now ranks ahead of Toyota on J.D. Power initial ownership surveys.
The firm is building a $5 billion steel mill in Korea that will focus on producing lightweight, high-tensile auto steel.

For Smokers Only: How Smokeless Tobacco Can Save Your Life Review

For Smokers Only: How Smokeless Tobacco Can Save Your Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently acquired this book, and couldn't put it down. I have smoked for 21 years, a pack-a-day. Before I bought this book (about a week or so), I made the decision to switch to smokeless tobacco. I came across this book and bought it to reinforce my decision.
Dr. Brad Rodu, Professor and Chair of Oral Pathology with the School of Dentistry with the University of Alabama at Birmingham, explodes all the myths and misconceptions concerning smokeless tobacco and it's health risks, including the big one that switchers trade one form of cancer for another. He includes many useful statistics to back up his claims, which are ignored by the fanatical anti-tobacco prohibitionists. While there is a slight increase of risk for oral cancer among smokeless users over the risk among non-tobacco users, the other problems associated with smokeless tobacco use are minimal, especially when compared with smoking tobacco use. The problem, you see, is with the nicotine delivery system. Combustion of tobacco causes 3,000 different chemicals to enter the lungs and all other organs and systems in the body. Not good. Radu points out that nicotine is what we are addicted to, NOT all the carcinogens and deadly toxins contained in tobacco smoke. Smokeless also doesn't produce harmful second-hand smoke, or discolor clothes and homes, or make burn-holes in beds and car seats, or cause house and forest fires, or stink up everything around it in general, like automobiles. He compares nicotine to caffeine, as both drugs have similar effects on the body, are both addictive, and neither is thought to directly contribute to any serious disease or health problem.
Rodu does not advocate starting any tobacco use if not currently using, and in fact would like to see its use eradicated in the next generation or two - he properly notes that the safest thing is to not use any tobacco at all, but nicotine is such a difficult addiction to shake. If other smoking-cessation programs don't work for you (which they often don't), then switching to smokeless tobacco is a viable and MUCH SAFER alternative. In fact, it is 98% SAFER THAN SMOKING. The life expectancy of a smokeless tobacco user is almost identical to that of a non-tobacco user, while smokers lose an average of 8-15 years of life, and those last years are often a horrible, miserable experience.
I have been off of cigs for almost 3 weeks now, using various U.S. Tobacco products, mostly the pouches in some yummy flavors. I have almost no desire to light up - in fact they stink to me now, and I can really smell a smoker when they get within range. The only time I want a smoke is when I wake up, or after a large meal, but that desire quickly goes away after I put in some smokeless tobacco. The only drawback so far is that it stains my teeth quite a bit, but I can breathe so much easier, and have so much more energy. The teeth-staining problem just requires more teeth maintenance, i.e. using mouthwash, a tooth pick, floss, etc. There is also a risk of gum or tooth loss, but my dentist has assured me that he would much rather see me using smokeless tobacco than smoking, and that I would just need to see him twice a year or so. As Radu points out, soon I will have a much lessened (almost non-existent in a few years) risk of heart attack, lung cancer, emphysema, heart disease, shortness-of-breath, COPD and all the other horrible things and cancers associated with long-term smoking.
I have recently talked to two older gentlemen that have used smokeless for 50 and 42 years, respectively, and no problems were noted, except one guy said he had some receding gum problems, but has not lost any teeth.
Smokeless tobacco is also much cheaper than cigarettes, as Rodu points out that smokers pay more money for less (but far more dangerous) tobacco.
Cigarette smoking kills about 420,000 people each year. It is the largest identifiable and PREVENTABLE cause of premature death in the United States. 20% of all deaths annually are because of smoking. If all of the 46 million American smokers would take Dr. Rodu's unconventional yet quite possibly effective advice, more lives would be saved, if not lengthened. The deaths from tobacco use would be down to about 6,000 per year!!! About 1.7 million smokers have made the switch, according to his stats, although the copy I have was printed in 1995.
If you are a smoker and have failed many times at quitting (as I had), this book is for you. It even illustrates (in pictures) how to properly use smokeless tobacco for 'rookies', and even shows women using the stuff. More 'spitless' products are available, to be even more discreet. If you have switched, and are meeting resistance with the same old tired (and inaccurate) mantras unjustifiably aimed at smokeless tobacco from friends, family members or health-care professionals, then this book is also for you. If you are tired of being a pariah in today's increasingly anti-smoking society, this book is for you. (Just try and find public places to light up these days - you can enjoy smokeless tobacco nearly everywhere, discreetly - and he points out the myth about swallowing tobacco juice being harmful is false, except for maybe an upset stomach.....)
Best of luck to all you current smokers out there - there is hope! I plan on using this as a stepping-stone to quit my personal tobacco use altogether.... But for the time being, I am not going crazy while I can now call myself, for the first time in 21 years, a non-smoker......

Hank Winton: Smokechaser Review

My mom had an old copy of this hanging around the house when I was a kid, from when she was a kid. It tells the story of a young man who wants to be a forest ranger, specifically what is called a smokechaser, who watches for and puts out forest fires. The book is very well-written; dramatic, detailed, and develops the characters and their relationships well. This book always makes me want to get out of the house and off the computer and out into a park or forest, which is a plus.

Mockeries and Metamorphoses of an Aztec God: Tezcatlipoca, "Lord of the Smoking Mirror" (Mesoamerican Worlds Series) Review

Mockeries and Metamorphoses of an Aztec God: Tezcatlipoca, Lord of the Smoking Mirror (Mesoamerican Worlds Series)
Average Reviews:

If you are wanting to know everything there is to know about the fascinating Aztec deity, Tezcatlipoca, this is certainly the book for you. Granted, it is the only full length book in English on this figure, but its mastery of the subject makes all other books moot anyway. This is an academic book, and I suspect most people reading it are either specialists in Mesoamerican archeology or history, but I'd recommend it to someone interested in general mythology as well (at least someone well read in that area). You might want to start with _The Flayed God: The Mesoamerican Mythological Tradition_ by Roberta H. Markman and Peter T. Markman for an introduction to the general mythology of the area. I know this isn't a great review, but I figure if you are looking for a book on Tezcatlipoca you won't really need a review (you probably already get the "Smoke and Mirrors" reference), I mainly wanted to give the book the five stars it deserves, so I figured I'd ramble a bit while I was at it. A deity as complex, ambiguous, interesting, and important (at least to the Aztecs - and as "Hurakan" to the Mayans) as Tezcatlipoca (he's even an amputee!) deserves wider attention.

Now available for the first time in English, Guilhem Olivier's Mockeries and Metamorphoses of an Aztec God is a masterful study of Tezcatlipoca, one of the greatest but least understood deities in the Mesoamerican pantheon. An enigmatic and melodramatic figure, "the Lord of the Smoking Mirror" was both drunken seducer and mutilated transgressor and, although he severely punished those who violated pre-Columbian moral codes, he also received mortal confessions. A patron deity to kings and warriors as well as a protector of slaves, Tezcatlipoca often clashed in epic confrontation with his "enemy brother" Quetzalcoatl, the famed "Feathered Serpent." Yet these powers of Mesoamerican mythology collaborated to create the world, and their common attributes hint toward a dual character. In a sophisticated and systematic tour through the sources and problems related to Tezcatlipoca's protean powers and shifting meanings, Olivier guides the reader skillfully through the symbolic names of this great god, from his representation on skins and stones to his relationship to ritual knives and other related deities. Drawing upon iconographic material, chronicles written in both Spanish and the native Nahuatl, and the rich contributions of ethnography, Mockeries and Metamorphoses of an Aztec God—like the mirror of Tezcatlipoca in which the fates of mortals were reflected—reveals an important but obscured portion of the cosmology of pre-Columbian Mexico.

Decadent Diploma in a Hartford Empty Room Review

Decadent Diploma in a Hartford Empty Room

Decadent Decay in a Hartford Empty Room is an excellent critque of college life. From the emptiness of getting stoned to the over indulgence of prodigal children who have way too much of daddy's money to spend. The narrator is a jaded suburban straight edge student who went to college with dreams of higher education without ever assuming that the HIGH would be more focused on than the education. At times the narrator is so jaded that the wording seems strange and jumbled but once I read through the entire book I understood what had actually happened. From the very beginning to the very end this book will have you in it's grasp. A fast read too at a little under 200 pages, it's definitely something you could read on a train or during a long car ride, or in the middle of Central Park on a warm day. I haven't enjoyed a fast and fun read this much since THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, and with the jaded progression of the narrator the comparison is inevitable. Much enjoyed and suggested for all!

If you asked me what it was about I would tell you; It's about creating a world inside yourself. It's about chemical combustion. It's about college, and that means drugs. It's about a place we go when we don't know where to go. It's about when dreams, fear and sex collide. If you asked me what it was about I'd ask you to kindly read it.

I'm reading a page a day and have been a non-smoker for 7 weeks now. This is my companion in the morning instead of a smoke and it is really working. It is completely changing my mental image of smoking. I'm really cool now. Buy it if you've quit, buy it if you want to. Start reading....
