Sweetsmoke Review

The much awaited Civil War novel, Sweetsmoke, by screenwriter, David Fuller, explores slave/carpenter Cassius Hoke's day-to-day existence on Plantation Sweetsmoke in Virginia. Cassius learns about the death of Emoline, the freedwoman who nursed him back to health and taught him to read and write. When it is apparent it is murder, he sets out to avenge her death.
As the story progressed, I became convinced why a black woman's death, slave or free, would have a devastating affect on both black and white, and especially Cassius, as the author drew a picture of Emoline as savior and guardian angel, yet a flawed and vulnerable woman. Emoline and Cassius have a special bond through his owner and her former owner, Hoke Howard, the tortured master of Sweetsmoke. Cassius plots his investigation carefully, yet methodically, never wavering from his mission to find the truth. For every answer Cassius gets, there arises another question; just who was Emoline, other than the woman who rescued him after the most devastating time of his life? A fortunate teller, a healer, and a risk taker; she taught him to read and write and exposed him to literature at a time when it was against the law to teach a slave to read, but Emoline had many secrets.
Cassius' past and present collide amidst the superstitious beliefs of the slaves; there is an aura of bad luck that surrounds him. But while he is somewhat of a pariah, he is also a trusted slave and respected among the field hands and the house servants. Nevertheless, his life as a slave is no less easy; the daily existence to not only stay alive, but to stay one step ahead of those who own him. With the need to not only hide his intelligence, but to downplay it for mere survival, Cassius smiles and flatters, manipulates and connives, while courting freedom. Cassius thinks he finds a kindred spirit in Quashee, a newly arrived slave, and uses his influence to raise her status on the plantation. She also unwittingly helps him in his dangerous quest of finding Emoline's murderer.
There was great detail in this novel. Several aspects of slave life were examined; the courting rituals of slaves, which could be political, the social and cultural aspects, the subterfuge and outwitting for self-preservation; interaction between slaves and freedmen, field hands and house slaves. Slaves turned on each other but also helped each other and kept each others' secrets. Readers also see how slaves played a part in helping those who sought freedom as conductors in the Underground Railroad and how many were agents of one kind of another in the war that was being fought between the Confederacy and the Union. Cassius stealthily goes from plantation to plantation and into town, picking up bits of news and gossip, when fate steps in and he is sent to the battlefields by his owner. His journey is long, arduous, difficult and dangerous but it is a means to an end for Cassius; two fold, to find the truth and a quest for freedom.
Fuller embodied his characters with dignity and intelligence, revealing their flaws, yet illuminating their sense of values and beliefs. At times the reading was slow; there was so much to take in, but I did not want to miss anything as the author beautifully painted a picture of slave life that is not often told. Fuller's impeccable research and attention to detail is not without notice. I was particularly in awe of learning about the storytelling competitions among slaves that traveled from plantation to plantation. Of course, I knew about the stories of the griots dating back to Africa; this tidbit confirmed that the ancestors' gift for tall tales was a reality. Chosen as a publisher's pick and already hinting at becoming required reading in high schools, Sweetsmoke, is a worthy addition to the slave narrative as two other 2008 historical fiction releases, Song Yet Song by James McBride and Stand the Storm by Breena Clark. A great addition to the libraries of fans of the Civil War and slavery literature. 4.5 rating.

"David Fuller vividly and movingly describes the life of Cassius, a slave on a Virginia tobacco plantation. Meticulously researched and beautifully written, Sweetsmoke resonates with unforgettable characters and is a gripping story of loss and survival." --Robert Hicks, author of The Widow of the South
"Sweetsmoke is a fascinating and gripping novel about the Civil War. The slave, Cassius Howard, is a great fictional character, and his story is part mystery, part love story, and a harrowing portrait of slavery that reads with the immense power of the slave narratives. A tour de force for David Fuller." --Pat Conroy, author of Beach Music and South of Broad
"With Sweetsmoke, David Fuller gives an extraordinarily nuanced, privileged, and convincing view of the world of slavery during the American Civil War, and of the hearts and minds of the men and women who had to live in that world." --Madison Smartt Bell, author of All Souls' Rising and Toussaint Louverture
The year is 1862, and the Civil War rages through the South. On a Virginia tobacco plantation, another kind of battle soon begins. There, Cassius Howard, a skilled carpenter and slave, risks everything--punishment, sale to a cotton plantation, even his life--to learn the truth concerning the murder of Emoline, a freed black woman, a woman who secretly taught him to read and once saved his life. It is clear that no one cares about her death in the midst of a brutal and hellish war. No one but Cassius, who braves horrific dangers to escape the plantation and avenge her loss.
As Cassius seeks answers about Emoline's murder, he finds an unexpected friend and ally in Quashee, a new woman brought over from another plantation; and a formidable adversary in Hoke Howard, the master he has always obeyed.
With subtlety and beauty, Sweetsmoke captures the daily indignities and harrowing losses suffered by slaves, the turmoil of a country waging countless wars within its own borders, and the lives of those people fighting for identity, for salvation, and for freedom.

The Aspiring Firefighter's 2 Year Plan Review

The Aspiring Firefighter's 2 Year Plan

I have bought every firefighter guide/book/manual during my quest for the Firefighter Badge and I must say that this is the guidebook. Every question that I was pondering about from military experience, education, to background investigation was covered in this book. This book along with Lepore's "SMOKE Your Firefighter Interview" should be required reading for future Firefighters.

This book applies to any type of candidate: high school students who are considering the fire service, older candidates who are contemplating a change in career, or current candidates who want to streamline the process or are having difficulty getting hired. Getting hired on the fire department can be a daunting task. It takes planning, passion and focus to achieve the goal. Without a clear path to follow, many candidates waste valuable time or proceed in a direction that is unproductive. The Aspiring Firefighter's Two-Year Plan clearly identifies the path a successful candidate will take to reach his or her goal of becoming a firefighter. A strategic plan will help you organize your thoughts, evaluate your resources, and clarify your destination. It will also help you decide if the fire department is really the right job for you before you pour thousands of dollars and years of effort towards a tenuous dream. Once you decide that their is no other job for you, then you can pursue your goal with passion, focus, and urgency. Your commitment will show in everything you do, and every test or interview you take. Battalion Chief Paul Lepore clearly outlines a plan to follow in this comprehensive 275-page book. He identifies the importance of education, how to create a fire department resume (complete with multiple examples), what it takes to complete a basic fire academy, the proper conduct on a ride-along, and what it takes to succeed in the fire station. The author's wife goes into great detail describing the humorous side of being married to a firefighter as well as the benefits to the family. The book answers questions on background, medical, and psychological exams. In addition, the author examines age, tattoos, mechanical ability, public speaking, and community service. Lastly, the book covers what to expect on your first day, what is expected from a rookie firefighter, what to expect from the fire academy.

Ray begins his book by talking about how all the other books on BBQ all start out talking about types of grills, grill tools, charcoal etc, and he's not going to start out his that way...Bravo! Good for him! Because most of us ALREADY know all about tools and grills. Insteay Lampe really wants to talk technique and taste. As he points out...cook on whatever you have...no one need feel they can't achieve great BBQ without spending hundreds of dollars on a high end grill or BBQ pit. Ray also tosses out the arguement of grilling vs. BBQ right off the bat and it's clear he has a bit of disdain for snooty types who think their way is the ONLY way. Again I say Bravo! It's this no-nonsene approach that really appealed to me about this book. Use what you can, it's all good and it WILL be good if you follow Ray's advice.
I've sampled a handfull of these recipes so far and here are some of my favorites: Smoked Turkey legs...they have a Renaissance Festival here every late Summer in Michigan and my favorite thing to eat is the giant, grilled, smoked turkey legs. I don't even like dark meat normally but these are delicious and with this recipe I can make them at home.
I like the rib recipes but my favorite was the backyard championship Ribs. Perfectly designed no matter what type of grill you are using. Boneless chicken is a staple in our home and the salsa grilled chicken breasts were also a big hit.
This book has quickly moved to the top of my list of favorites!

Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilization Review

Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilization
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tobacco is "certainly the most equivocal substance in daily human use," according to Iain Gately. His author photo shows him unequivocally smoking his cigar, and so you might expect that he would go easy on the weed in his book _Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilization_ (Grove Press). For those who think that cigarettes are an unalloyed curse, some of his book will be difficult reading. No history of tobacco can ignore the many social and health costs connected to the drug, and Gately's does not. But American Indians were using it for centuries, and in the five centuries since the conquest of the Americas, tobacco has insinuated itself into every diverse culture; there must be a reason that the killer drug is regarded by millions as a pleasure and a comfort. In fact, there are lots of reasons which the plant has exploited, and so it has a rich and complex history. Gately has researched widely and told the history well.
Tobacco has been part of human culture for about 18,000 years. It was cultivated in the Andes region about six thousand years ago, and only eventually smoked. "That lungs had a dual function - could be used for stimulation in addition to respiration - is one of the American continent's most significant contributions to civilization." The gift of dried tobacco leaves to Columbus in the Bahamas got thrown overboard; no one knew why the natives were getting rid of their tobacco leaves this way. The British took to snuff, in imitation of the fashionable French, but also smoked with pipes like the ones North American Indians used. The British were slow to follow the French in cigarette usage, for they were regarded as "a miserable apology" for the more manly pleasure of cigars or pipes; Oscar Wilde enjoyed horrifying society in many ways, and chain-smoking his effeminate cigarettes was one of them. All the nations of the world showed disgust at the particularly American practice of chewing tobacco and thereupon expectorating tinted spittle. Charles Dickens wrote, "In the courts of law, the judge has his spittoon, the crier his, the witness his, and the prisoner his; while the jurymen and the spectators are provided for, as so many men who in the course of nature must desire to spit incessantly." Modern advertising gets a good examination here; surprisingly, the Marlboro Man was originally no such thing; Philip Morris brought out Marlboros "Mild as May" in 1924, targeted for decent and respectable ladies.
Gately's book has not been edited to be turned into an American version, so American readers will note a disproportionate number of anecdotes and facts from Europe. (An appendix even tells how Her Majesty's subjects can grow the plant in England for their own use.) He has some limp support of tobacco as a guard against such illnesses as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and too often his disdain for the anti-smoking movement is obvious. However, this is a great subject. The effects of tobacco on bodies may be bad, and on society may be bad as well (slavery, for instance, was a New World tradition largely because of tobacco farms), and Gately tells the dark side of the stories well; this is not an apology or an advertisement for smoking, but more of a historical explanation. For anyone who smokes, or who is interested in a world-wide history centered on one particular plant and the uses to which addicted and habituated people have put it, _Tobacco_ tells an important story in an entertaining way.

I highly recommend "Murder in Winnebago County" by Christine Husom to anyone who appreciates a good mystery. I particularly liked the insight that is provided into the plotting mind of the killer. Although you never quite know what will happen next. Also, Sgt. Corky Aleckson is a well-drawn and believable protagonist. I expect to read more of her adventures in the near future.

I can't understand all the horrible reviews this book got. I almost didn't read it because of them, but I loved Hornets Nest so figured I'd give it a shot and I'm really glad I did. I went into this book not expecting a whole lot due to the negative reviews, and I was pleasently surprised. I really enjoyed this book and the characters, I found it a very funny, entertaining and light story. I'm glad I didn't listen to the majority of bad reviews and hope that Ms. Cornwell will continue the series with another story involving Hammer, West and Brazil (as well as many more Scarpetta novels!).

Marijuana Myths Marijuana Facts: A Review Of The Scientific Evidence Review

Marijuana Myths Marijuana Facts: A Review Of The Scientific Evidence
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is something important that needs to be in the public discourse. I don't smoke marijuana, and I've never tried. But I've read a lot about it and this book is not really as biased as the drug counselor claimed in his/her review. In fact, this book is merely an echo of what honest scientists have known for more than a hundred years, with new modern evidence to confirm that knowledge.
Since I cannot offer much more praise for this book than most people here, I thought I could do people who haven't made up their minds a better service by refuting the claims made by the drug counselor. Here is my point-by-point breakdown of that review:
First, the reviewer (I'm going to use the female pronous from now on) said that you get what you look for and she warned us all to take an "unbiased approach."
This is an interesting way to determine if something's biased: if you agree with it, it's not, if you don't agree, it is. And if you don't agree, you then warn others to be "unbiased." Please spare me the moralizing. She's a drug counselor, not a scientist as will become quite clear by the time I'm finished.
The next claim is that marijuana is "a psychologically addictive drug." What she doesn't mention is that this book does not claim otherwise. Obviously one must wonder whether she even read it. The books says, and I'm quoting verbatim from chaper 3 "Marijuana and Addiction," "Marijuana does not cause PHYSICAL [emphasis added] dependence." This is an important distinction: nictotine, caffeine, and alcohol ALL cause physical dependence.
What about psychological dependence? Physical dependence is the one that is the most dangerous. Anything can be "psychologically addictive." All that means is that people get "addicted" to the pleasure something brings. Sex is psychologically addictive, so are most things that make people feel pleasure in any amount. I once read about a man who got psychologically addicted to Advil tablets, yet in and of itself that's not a big deal, and he "quit" without any drug counselor's help. The real danger is from physical dependence: Drugs that cause it also have withdrawl symptoms because they change the make-up of neurotransmitters in the brain. Marijuana DOES NOT DO THAT.
If you're wondering about how much this drug counselor knows, than it's about to get even worse. This is probably the most disingenuious statement in her review:
"There has NOT been a lot said as to the harmful effects of marijuana as relates to traffic accidents, driving under the influence, industrial accidents, etc. The human toll here has yet to be defined but is estimated as astronomical. The economic costs of marijuana's well-known amotivational syndrome are all too well known."
That statement is a flat out lie and by now it's clear that not only did she NOT read the book at all, but she's never read anything about marijuana from an "unbiased approach."
The British government recently completed a study that showed marijuana using motorists are LESS LIKELY to get in car wrecks when they're high (source, "Reason" Nov. 2000). Why? The claming effects caused the drivers to drive more cautiously and less recklessly without causing a decrease in reaction times or judgement as seen with indentical studies using alcohol.
Second, there isn't an "astronomical" human toll from marijuana use. The real number of deaths that the government has linked directly to marijuana use? ZERO. That is not to say that marijuana can't cause deaths, just that it hasn't been shown that it does, in fact most researchers now agree that there is no way to overdose on marijuana.
Finally, "amotivational" syndrome is not causally linked with marijuana. This is a simple distortion of science to serve a poltical agenda: correlation does not equal causation and marijuana does not cause amotivational syndrome. Chirst people, don't review a book you haven't read.
I love this next one, this person really is an idiot:
"(And by the way, one reviewer stated tobacco as being more harmful-that is not proven. The amount of tar and nicotine in one "joint" is much higher than in one cigarette. Get your facts straight)"
Okay folks, if you're following the pattern here than you know what comes next.
First, tobacco smoke is much more harmful than marijuana smoke, but not for the reasons most people realize. Second, anyone who thinks there is nicotine in a joint needs their head examined, and finally all of this has been proven.
Tobacco smoke is bad, really bad. Everyone knows this. It's the smoke that kills, not the nicotine. But tobacco smoke kills only because smokers must inhale such a high amount to get a decent level of nicotine into their bloodstream. Marijuana "joints" deliver much more active ingredient per unit of smoke than tobacco by FAR. Most smokers smoke a pack a day or more, yet the average marijuana user may smoke a couple of joints a week. My roommate uses it a couple of times a month. This is because nicotine causes physical addiction, marijuana does not. The tobacco user inhales an ever increasing level of smoke to get that nicotine fix that was formerly delivered with less, the marijuana user does not need to do this. Trust me, I may not use marijuana, but I do use tobacco.
Also, studies of heavy tobacco users who also use marijuana show no "superadditive" effect: if marijuana smoke was as bad as tobacco smoke than it should've been obvious in people who used both, because that way scientists would be able to get around the fact that many people don't need to smoke that much marijuana to get high. The studies showed that there was no superadditive effect and that marijuana does not obstruct the lung's small airways and cannot be linked to lung cancer or emphysema even in heavy chronic users.
Marijuana smokers inhale less over time than tobacco users, so they experience less lung damage. But let's be clear: any smoke burns when you inhale, thus that probably means it's not as good for you as not inhaling it. And marijuana smoke contains lung irritants, just like tobacco smoke does. The honest truth? Marijuana has not been linked to the problems that tobacoo has been, but that is not proof that it is safe to smoke it, it just may be safer than tobacco.
Okay, I debunked the "unbiased approach" and I apoloigze for the length of this review. I think the reviewer I debunked did a disservice to all of you: she obviously didn't read the book, and she flat out lied.
She said that one reviwer wrote that some people just get what they look for.
I'd like to add that some people should take off their blindfolds before they try to see.

You could hardly blame Dexter, ordinarily a well-behaved young dragon, for showing off when he suddenly found that he could make clouds of smoke. The temptation is irresistible, but Dexter quickly becomes insufferable. First he watches his own reflection in the river in order to admire the smoke. Then he puffs it in the faces of his friends: the zebra, the giraffe, and the elephant. He even blows smoke rings around his own tail to prove how clever he is.Soon Dexter has no friends left. He is a very lonely dragon indeed, until quite by accident he discovers a way his talent can be used to win back his playmates. This wonderful story -- first published in 1953 -- will delight both young readers and their parents, and so will Lisa McCue's appealing new pictures of this lovable show-off.

Subnature: Architecture's Other Environments Review

Subnature: Architecture's Other Environments
Average Reviews:

Professor Gissen's Subnature may at first seem to be an in depth study of matter such as pollution, mud or debris. Not so in my opinion. This book is also about uncovering the intagible and invisible nature of history. An experimental history whereby events in the past may help us reshape the future.
An extraordinary and poetic journey in which the immanence of matter becomes a phenomenological vehicule for dreaming new creations.

We are conditioned over time to regard environmental forces such as dust, mud, gas, smoke, debris, weeds, and insects as inimical to architecture. Much of today's discussion about sustainable and green design revolves around efforts to clean or filter out these primitive elements. While mostly the direct result of human habitation, these "subnatural forces" are nothing new. In fact, our ability to manage these forces has long defined the limits of civilized life. From its origins, architecture has been engaged in both fighting and embracing these so-called destructive forces. In Subnature, David Gissen, author of our critically acclaimed Big and Green, examines experimental work by today's leading designers, scholars, philosophers, and biologists that rejects the idea that humans can somehow recreate a purely natural world, free of the untidy elements that actually constitute nature. Each chapter provides an examination of a particular form of subnature and its actualization in contemporary designpractice. The exhilarating and at times unsettling work featured in Subnature suggests an alternative view of natural processes and ecosystems and their relationships to human society and architecture. R&Sien's Mosquito Bottleneck house in Trinidad uses a skin that actually attracts mosquitoes and moves them through the building, while keeping them separate from the occupants. In his building designs the architect Philippe Rahm draws the dank air from the earth and the gasses and moisture from our breath to define new forms of spatial experience. In his Underground House, Mollier House, and Omnisport Hall, Rahm forces us to consider the odor of soil and the emissionsfrom our body as the natural context of a future architecture. [Cero 9]'s design for the Magic Mountain captures excess heat emitted from a power generator in Ames, Iowa, to fuel a rose garden that embellishes the industrial site and creates a natural mountain rising above the city's skyline. Subnature looks beyond LEED ratings, green roofs, and solar panels toward a progressive architecture based on a radical new conception of nature.
