Dr. Lara Mallory is a fallen woman since a tabloid incident involving her and Senator Clark Tackett. She had been married at the time, and found anything but a forgiving attitude following the scandal. Finally, after Clark Tackett dies and leaves her a medical practice in his home town of Eden Pass, Texas, she decides to start over there. Besides, she believes the Tackett family owes her, and she's in town to collect a favor from Clark's younger brother, notorious playboy Key. Things are even tougher in Eden Pass, however, because Clark's powerful mother, Jody Tackett, has it out for her. Key seems to share his mother's low opinion, as does his mouse of a sister, Janellen, and the rest of the town. Key despises himself for falling for his dead brother's bimbo, but he can't seem to resist her. At the same time, 33-year-old Janellen is finally breaking out of her shell. When an ex-con named Bowie Cato comes in to Tackett Oil looking for a job, there's something compelling about him, and pretty soon Janellen starts restyling her hair and wearing make-up while she and Bowie sneak around to build their romance.
Sandra Brown can write one heck of a gripping thriller, but sometimes her books seem to have somewhat of a hard edge to them, and this is one of those books. It's as if the author was undergoing difficult personal turmoil at the time, and it came out in her writing. The judgmental attitude that pervades this novel seems appropriate for a small town like Eden Pass, but doesn't fit quite so well with the rest of the country, considering that infidelity did not sink the political aspirations of Bill Clinton, and notoriety has become a form of fame. She tosses words like whore, tramp, and trash around quite liberally, which made it difficult to warm to several of the characters. Perhaps it was done on purpose to underscore the hypocrisy inherent in these characters, but it was still somewhat distasteful.
The story was a good one, with a few good twists and turns along the way, but I also was not horribly fond of the ending. She created and fleshed out a couple of characters simply to kill them off at the end, and another rather innocuous character meets a bad end that didn't seem fitting to his actions throughout the book. Aside from those complaints, however, this is a pretty good novel with a compelling storyline. I just think I would have liked it better if everyone within its pages wasn't quite so mean.

Beyond Smoke and Mirrors: Climate Change and Energy in the 21st Century Review

Beyond Smoke and Mirrors: Climate Change and Energy in the 21st Century
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After hearing and reading a great deal in the popular press about climate change caused by human activities, I became convinced that most of what one hears on this subject is highly biased and unreliable. The problem is that almost everyone who speaks out on this controversial subject has either an economic interest, a political interest, or a professional career interest to advance by taking a biased or extreme position. Seeking a balanced and unbiased presentation of this topic, I found it in this excellent and highly readable book by Burton Richter. As a Nobel Laureate in physics with extremely high intelligence and none of these special interests to influence him, he seems to be the ideal person to tell the straight story.
And tell it he does, in a very clear English that anyone can read. The few portions of the book that are even slightly technical are designated with a grey background so the reader can skip them if desired. He describes each problem and each possible solution in ways that show how large or small a contribution it makes to the big picture. The end result is a very balanced and reasonable overview of the entire global energy usage and greenhouse gas story.
In summary, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to look past the "smoke and mirrors" of the climate change and energy usage debate to discover the facts that should help guide us to a more sustainable energy future.

Global climate change is one of the most important issues humanity faces today. This book assesses the sensible, senseless and biased proposals for averting the potentially disastrous consequences of global warming, allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions on switching to more sustainable energy provision. Burton Richter is a Nobel Prize-winning scientist who has served on many US and international review committees on climate change and energy issues. He provides a concise overview of our knowledge and uncertainties within climate change science, discusses current energy demand and supply patterns, and the energy options available to cut emissions of greenhouse gases. Written in non-technical language, this book presents a balanced view of options for moving from our heavy reliance on fossil fuels into a much more sustainable energy system, and is accessible to a wide range of readers without scientific backgrounds - students, policymakers, and the concerned citizen.

I have enjoyed every one of Lawrence Block's Bernie Rhodenbarr books and was pleased to discover this short story starring the bookseller and sometime burglar in a story that I hadn't read. I hope that everyone who loves this series as much as I do downloads and reads this as a reinforcement of how much we love these stories and want more, more, more. The story is well structured and true Rhodenbarr. I only wish it could go on and on. Mr. Block, if you have any more of these up your sleeve, please put them on Kindle so we can have the pleasure of reading them. Another book would be even better.

“The Burglar Who Smelled Smoke" features Bernie Rhodenbarr, the lighthearted and lightfingered hero of ten mystery novels. You'll note that it bears a joint byline. Lynne Wood Block, my frequent companion, came up with the basic idea and did the requisite research. Then I sat down and wrote the story, which was the easy part.It was published as a special insert in Mary Higgins Clark's mystery magazine and in an anthology of similar husband/wife collaborations, and has been chosen for locked-room anthologies. I included it in my omnibus collection of short fiction, Enough Rope, so if you already own that book, or want to acquire it in eBook form, you may not need to snap up this present offering.I supose it's inevitable that a burglar should star in a classic locked-room mystery story. Bernie's in another as well, “The Burglar Who Dropped In On Elvis," and one of these days I'll make that available.

This book is not the best in the series but you need to read it anyway. I have read it 3 times already and I still enjoy it. It places the Rebels against a terrorist who believes himself a religious person. The Rebels once again take up arms and start kicking the ass off of lots of people. I think the general population shall like this adition to the series.

. . . this is my first book review on Amazon. Reading A Trace of Smoke is like settling into a comfortable chair, right smack in front of a massive open window with all the sights, sounds, and smells of a strange new world unfolding in front of you. Cantrell writes about a time and place that I knew little about, early 30's Berlin at the start of the Nazi rise to power. She weaves a tight plot of murder and suspense through the hard and unforgiving shadows of Berlin, and propels it forward with a cadre of historical and unique fictional characters that makes you flinch, gasp, and keep turning the page. It's a world I didn't know and story I wasn't expecting, but I want more of both. Impressive.

Conducting Research in Psychology: Measuring the Weight of Smoke Review

Conducting Research in Psychology: Measuring the Weight of Smoke

Brett Pelham does a phenomenal job of bringing excitement and life to a subject matter many students and psychologists deem boring-research and research methodology. In his easy-to-read book, Brett brings comedy to confounding variables, t-scores, and placebo effects. Throughout the book, he backs up his explanation of research terms by using clear, but witty illustrations. Brett was my professor at UCLA and he used this book for his Psychology Research and Methodology course. A class I had been dreading was made alive, interesting, and easy to understand, not only through his lectures, but through this book! If you are a psychology teacher, a student struggling to fully grasp reasearch methods, or just a person who enjoys reading well written, easy to read books, with a comedic kick, then this is a great book for you! It will not only change the way you view methodology/research, but heighten your understanding of the topic.

Up in Smoke (Silver Dragons, Book 2) Review

Up in Smoke (Silver Dragons, Book 2)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Up in Smoke is the second book in the new silver dragon series. It parallels Aisling's novels wonderfully, yet May stands on her own and her story is delightfully funny and completely different. She has to contend with so many people and beings wanting something from her.
The only reason Magoth wants her as a consort is to have access to the mortal world to create mayhem, destruction blah blah blah. Gabriel is fighting to keep May by his side, and all the dragons are trying to figure out who is the real Blue Wyvern Fiat or Bastion, as well as whether or not the Black dragons are their own Sept, and if so what will happen to the Silver Sept who used to be a part of the Black Sept.
As if that wasn't bad Cyrene is convinced she's Kostya's mate, the only reason she can't hold his fire is he isn't officially recognized.... right... and no one wants to break the news to a crazy Naiad who just lost her job as a protector of her spring and lost her common sense in order to create her Doppelganger May. May now has to talk to Neptune (that's right the Roman God) to petition for Cy's job back. Did I mention the one dragon who everyone though Kostya had killed is running around in the shadow world, Baltic.
This story is definitely action packed and a great follow up story. I love Gabriel but every time Aisling and Drake are mentioned I keep my fingers crossed that Katie MacAlister is writing their continued story quickly. All in all I can't wait for the third.

Smoke Screen (Love Inspired Suspense) Review

Smoke Screen (Love Inspired Suspense)
Average Reviews:

Stephanie Newton continues her series set in Sea Breeze, Florida with the January release of Smoke Screen featuring Jake Rollins, ex-firefighter turned pastor. Jake was sidelined from fire fighting due to an injury incurred while trying to rescue his fiancée from a fire. Sadly she perished in the fire, but it was ruled an accident. When a female friend of Jake's is murdered in a similar situation, the fire is deemed and arson and FBI agent Chloe Davis is brought in to solve the murders.
As Jake works alongside Chloe to find the killer who continues to threaten women Jake befriends, the pair develops feelings for each other. But Chloe, used to being alone and trusting only herself, finds it hard to trust Jake's feelings for her. Whether Chloe will give in becomes as much of a mystery as the arsonists identity and the reader is treated to a quick moving story that has them racing to the end to find the answers.
Stephanie Newton, one of my new favorite authors, has released another winner. She has proven that the reader can expect certain things from her and she will deliver. The plots and characters change, but Newton's ability to draw us into her make believe world and thoroughly enjoy each and every minute in that world doesn't change. Her characters are varied and different but all have a depth that I immediately connect with. Their struggles become my struggles, and I soon think of them as new friends.
All of this is important, but I am also looking for a strong spiritual message in the book. Newton is a master at weaving a message into her work. A message that is never forced or contrived, but is as at home in the story as her wonderful characters. If you like romantic suspense and haven't read any of Newton's books, I encourage you to pick one up. You will be glad you did.

Can It, Bottle It, Smoke It: And Other Kitchen Projects
Average Reviews:

This is just a lovely primer on making things from scratch that are normally convenience or grocery store purchases. Because they are made from scratch, they combine unexpected flavors for gourmet goodies that would make wonderful gifts.
The photography of the colorful food is gorgeously photographed. The recipes and techniques are well explained. It's separated into clear chapters by type of food and well indexed at the back as well the table of contents in the beginning.
I was going to do a chapter by chapter breakdown, but there are a lot of chapters with a few recipes in each one. This book covers a lot of cook-ahead things for stocking your fridge, freezer and pantry.
Highlights for me include instructions for making your own masa harina and your own hot dogs with more information on how to turn those two things into corn dogs completely made from scratch. A wonderful curry powder recipe, corned beef and how to smoke your homemade corned beef to make pastrami, how to roast coffee beans in a heavy skillet, homemade chocolate/hazelnut spread, and how to make different kinds of non-dairy milk including a recipe for horchata. With some homemade sodas and icy sweet treats this book is just great. The sodas are yeast carbonated which is one of my favorite ways to make soda pop.
It's easy and inspiring. My daughter has pages marked for recipes she wants to try. A wonderful cookbook for people who are really getting into making things themselves and the DIY lifestyle.

Beyond Smoke and Mirrors: Mexican Immigration in an Era of Economic Integration Review

Beyond Smoke and Mirrors: Mexican Immigration in an Era of Economic Integration
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most popular discussions of contemporary U.S. immigration ignore history and the "facts on the ground." Massey lays out the history of Mexico-U.S. migration. He provides convincing evidence that stepped-up border enforcement efforts since the early 1990s have been both deadly and counterproductive. He argues forcefully for an immigration policy that takes the realities of U.S.-Mexican social and economic integration into account. Readers who are convinced that immigration is a bad thing in itself will not be persuaded by Massey to change their minds; those who are interested in a dispassionate discussion of border control issues will find this book provocative and useful.

Migration between Mexico and the United States is part of a historical process of increasing North American integration. This process acquired new momentum with the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1994, which lowered barriers to the movement of goods, capital, services, and information. But rather than include labor in this new regime, the United States continues to resist the integration of the labor markets of the two countries.Instead of easing restrictions on Mexican labor, the United States has militarized its border and adopted restrictive new policies of immigrant disenfrachisement.Beyond Smoke and Mirrors examines the devastating impact of these immigration policies on the social and economic fabric of the Mexico and the United States, and calls for a sweeping reform of the current system. The costs of the U.S. policy have been high. The book documents how the massive expansion of border enforcement has wasted billions of dollars and hundreds of lives, yet has not deterred increasing numbers of undocumented immigrants from heading north. The authors also show how the new policies unleashed a host of unintended consequences: a shift away from seasonal, circular migration toward permanent settlement; the creation of a black market for Mexican labor; the transformation of Mexican immigration from a regional phenomenon into a broad social movement touching every region of the country; and even the lowering of wages for legal U.S. residents. What had been a relatively open and benign labor process before 1986 was transformed into an exploitative underground system of labor coercion, one that lowered wages and working conditions of undocumented migrants, legal immigrants, and American citizens alike. Rather than denying the reality of labor migration, the authors recommend regularizing it and working to manage it so as to promote economic development in Mexico and minimize costs and disruptions for the United States.Beyond Smoke and Mirrors provides an essential "user's manual" for readers seeking a historical, theoretical, and substantive understanding of how U.S. policy on Mexican immigration evolved to its current dysfunctional state, as well as how it might be fixed.

Blue Smoke Review

Blue Smoke
Average Reviews:

I read all the reviews of Blue Smoke BEFORE I read the book, something I usually do not do...so I was expecting a real mess. To my surprise, I liked the book a great deal. I'm not saying it's Nora's best, but I am surprised by some of the vehemence of those who did not like the plot line.
Yes, this is the story of an arsonist cum serial killer who, like most serial killers I have heard and read about, escalates his crimes and violence with each killing. And yes, there are some brutal descriptions of him in action, one in particular, which takes place shortly before the end of the book. But this is not Nora's first foray into murder when she is writing as herself. "Sanctuary" comes immediately to mind; the descriptions of the dead mother in that book are scary and gruesome to the max.
I think that for an author as prolific as Nora, to be expected to churn out romance after romance after romance, with no twists or no new material, is too much to ask. This is a murder mystery with the patented Nora love interest thrown in. Is it perfect? No. Should the main character, Reena, have figured out on the first page who the perpetrator was, as so many reviewers suggest? Well, maybe, but having watched "Cold Case Files" (the real one on the A&E Channel) for years, I know that it doesn't work that way in real life. Sometimes the obvious is simply not all that obvious.
In sum, I thought Blue Smoke was a heck of a good read; that's my opinion. Yes, if you abhor violence, either skip the violent parts (there really aren't all that many) or skip the book. But otherwise, I think Nora deserves a bit of praise for a well-told tale.

Smoke and Mirrors: Short Fictions and Illusions (P.S.) Review

Smoke and Mirrors: Short Fictions and Illusions (P.S.)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I should point out first that (a) I've been Neil's friend for many years, and therefore not without bias, and (b) some of these stories I've read several times before. However, due to various health problems, I have been spending a lot of time in a series of doctor's waiting rooms for months now, and Smoke and Mirrors has been my book of choice for resisting lure of six month old issues of Field and Stream. I have read it from start to finish, resisting the strong temptation to flip forward to the stories I hadn't read, savoring each offering as I would a course in a lavish meal (and considering I'm on a diabetic's diet that's more savoring than I'm allowed in the traditional sense). It's been an unalloyed pleasure. And yesterday, while waiting for my endcrinologist to check me over, I finished the last story.
I rationed myself on this book, but you don't have to. If you only know Gaiman from Neverwhere or his Sandman comics, this is a chance to see the full range of his writing chops, which are formidable. I defy anyone to find me a better story this side of Nathaniel West about the mythical land of Hollywood than "The Goldfish Pool and Other Stories." I cannot think of a more bizarre marriage than the melding of epic poetry and bikini bimbos that is Baywolf. I heard the ghost of Peter Cook at my ear in "Shoggoth's Old Peculiar." I took inordinate pleasure in reading "Snow, Glass, Apples" aloud to a group of my son's friends, and watching them laugh uneasily.
There is a wealth of fine storytelling here, a veritable trove of style and substance, passion and pastiche, wit and bite and vision and venom. The art of the short story is in excellent hands.

Master of Smoke (Mageverse) Review

Master of Smoke (Mageverse)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Holy smokes, this book kept me on the edge of my seat and it was so exciting to read that I couldn't put it down!
First off, Ms. Knight is a riot. I found so many reasons to grin during this very thrilling book due to her quips from Monty Python. The author threw in other references to pop culture that totally livened up and made the heroine a blast to read about and easier to relate to. I mean Eva's sense of humor even when the chips were down had me liking her as a person and I would feel confident if such a person were in my corner when life's hard knocks sounded on my door.
The relationship between Eva and Smoke/David/Cat was simply fabulous. When Eva made the quip about Stargate, it was exactly what crossed my mind and I thought that was so cool. I snickered about the part where stress sent her into the kitchen. I giggled when Cat turned cat and the resulting dialogue from Eva had me smiling from the cleverness of it all. I enjoyed the family relationship that Eva had with her parents and I laughed out loud any time her father's geekiness peppered the story. It was so positive and upbeat even when things are spiraling out of control into nastiness.
David is a delightfully complicated man or whatever he is. A reader gets the real lowdown of what he sort of is and I was utterly fascinated. Despite his power and abilities, he needs love just like anyone else and it's that spark of vulnerability that made his character relatable and oh, so easy to like. He's no slouch in the bedroom, or on the beach or anywhere else he could have Eva. In fact, this is a very well balanced story between sheet action and just plain old suspense and adventure with plenty of intriguing plot to satisfy the seekers of meaty romantic suspense.
Another thing I liked about Master of Smoke was the repeat characters, like Arthur and Gwen. I also liked the sub-story between Belle and Tristan. I just know that Ms. Knight is setting them up for something but as to what, I can't wait to find out. As it is, they played a substantial supporting role in assisting Eva and David and it was riveting. There is even another sub-plot that is being set up in this book for a future adventure but I can't even begin to guess who will be the unlucky vampire to get stuck with that challenge. It's going to be a doozy.
As for the villains, there is one main one with his underlings doing horrid things because they're just as demented as he is, though not as powerful. Warlock is a convincing villain and a powerful one. The battle was gripping and well written because I could visualize it in my head. I'd love to see that on T.V. I bet the effects would be awesome. All the bad guys deserve no mercy and readers will totally agree once they read this book.
There are amazing twists and exciting turns in this tale that makes Master of Smoke one of the best books in the Mageverse series to date. This book satisfied me on so many levels and it made the romance reader in me extremely happy. I'm so glad Smoke finally got his happily ever after.
It's been a wild and furry ride and I can't wait until the next book.
Ms. Knight has done it again; readers of this series are going to be so happy because Master of Smoke has everything that they've come to expect from this talented author, plus more. I had such a good time reading this, I hated for it to end. More please.

I got SMOKE SCREEN in the morning from Amazon and I sat right down and read it. I could not put it down. The story is amazing and the characters are great. Sandra Brown has been one of my favorite authors for a while. I have all her books and they are mostly keepers. This one is definitely a keeper.
Britt Shelley is a news reporter for a TV station in Charleston. She made her first big break on a story about the Charleston PD and Fire Dept. An arson specialist with the Fire Dept was found in bed with a dead woman at Jay Burgess's apartment. That was five yrs ago and she and Jay had a short liasion. Jay's friend who was found in bed with the dead woman left town and has not been heard from in all that time. She is not surprised when Jay calls and invites her out for drinks. He has been one of her informants in the PD since the day she met him. She knows he is a player but now they just are friends.
She meets Jay and has a drink while he tells her he has a big story to tell her. He also tells her he has cancer and only a few weeks to live. They go to his apt for some privacy to talk, and imagine her horror to wake up in bed with Jay and he is dead.
Raley Gannon was the friend of Jay's who was found with the dead woman. He not only was disgraced and lost his job he lost his fiance. He has not forgotten the experience. When he hears about Britt's experience it sounds alot like his, because he does not remember anything about how he wound up in bed with the dead woman, when he went to a party at Jay's. He was engaged at the time and very much in love with his fiance. Britt is insisting she has no memories of going to bed with Jay.
Raley kidnaps her and interrogates her about Jay. Finally he tells her what really happened to him. Jay had convinced him to not mention anything about drugs because the dead woman had OD'd on coke. But now Raley is sure he was set up and so was Britt. They join forces when the autopsey says Jay was smothered.
From here on out this is a major ride and I loved it. There are some quaint characters and the roller coaster ride is chilling. How can they prove anything while she is wanted for murder and he is still thought of as a looser. Do not miss this one.

Tree of Smoke: A Novel Review

Tree of Smoke: A Novel
Average Reviews:

I was very disappointed. I'd read Angels years ago and had wanted to get back to Johnson. My qualms are not with the writing--Johnson is a gifted stylist and you must be careful not to gloss over certain passages or paragraphs which are dense philosophical insights wrapped in great prose and at times poetry. Nor with the politics--those dismissing the book for its lack of aviation verisimilitude or because it wasn't as good a Vietnam book as some others, are evaluating an apple as an orange.
My disappointment is with the characters and the plot. This is at heart an intellectual work: it ruminates and dazzles, but the characters remain distant and abstract, and each time I became caught up in a subplot, it would be discarded. It was a novel that made me think--but I also wanted to feel.
Skip Sands is the fulcrum around which the novel moves, but I never was able to fully grasp his character--or care about him. And, while he thinks a lot, he doesn't do very much.
Take my review, however, with a grain of salt. I've seen some reviewers refer to Tolstoy, and I have to admit, I felt the same way about Sands as I did about Pierre in War and Peace.
