I was a die-hard smoker. If I had limited time to either go to the restroom or go outside for a smoke, the urge to smoke would always win. I tried the different stop smoking programs with no success. Fortunately, three years ago, I discovered the QuitSmart System. Finally a comprehensive program that really works! Each component included in the Kit - book, hypnosis tape, and cigarette substitute - provides its own unique value.
The Guidebook is packed with useful information and advice; it is easy to reference over and over. During peak urges to smoke, I would reread my favorite sections. There is a partial list of 4000 chemicals smokers inhale: arsenic, DDT, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide to name a few. In the section about withdrawal symptoms as your body heals itself, one point says, "Feeling dizzy or lightheaded sometimes occurs as your brain gets more oxygen than it is use to."Wow, this information would always kill my urge to light up!
The Hypnosis audio tape proved to be priceless. At work, instead of my usual, inconvenient smoke breaks (ten floors down and outside near the dumpsite), I used a portable player with headsets and listened to the tape. It was amazing how well the audio helped me to calm down and focus on my tasks. At the end of my work day, instead of a cigarette to help me "unwind," I listened to the tape.
The Cigarette Substitute's unique design allows you to adjust the draw to your liking; the deep breaths provide a calming sensation. Also, the Cigarette Substitute fulfills the need to do something with your hands and mouth--more satisfying than chewing a pencil or pen all day! During my previous attempts to quit smoking, irritability was a pitfall. A close friend once said he would rather I smoke than put up with my irritability! Along with the QuitSmart System, I chose to use the Nicotine patch. Irritability was never an issue. The QuitSmart Guidebook includes very helpful information on your medication options (from patch, gum, and inhaler to Zyban tablets), including a chapter on the Nicotine patch written by the Duke doctor who invented it.
This program eases you into quitting; it gives you time to prepare for your quit date. Buy this Kit now-even if you are only thinking about quitting or dread the energy and focus it takes to stop. You will discover a unique support system that may prompt you to set that special date sooner than later!

"Hyundai Smokes the Competition" by Alex Taylor III was the most appealing article in this issue, and reported on the 43-year-old company's best-in-class quality and aggressive volume goals. Its 21-story headquarters south of Seoul has monitors watching operations around the world from Beijing to Montgomery, Alabama - including its Ulsan, Korea plant, the world's largest integrated auto factory.
Combined with sister company Kia (owns 39%), Hyundai has 80% of auto sales in Korea, while U.S. sales are +7% in a -24% market. Kia has become the 8th most popular brand in the U.S. in only 15 years. In China, Hyundai is in second place, behind VW among international car makers. In 2008 it introduced the Genesis model as an upgrade from Sonata. This last December, U.S. customers saw the 2011 Sonata two months ahead of schedule. Hyundai is already 4th among the world's car-makers and was named years ago by Toyota as the company it feared most. Its goal is 6.5 million units in 2 years, vs. 5.9 million in 2009. En route, it is introducing a new model this year, the $60,000 Equus, to compete with top Mercedes, BMW, and Audis costing $20,000 more. Hyundai introduced its first hybrid last summer - it has developed lithium-polymer batteries 40% smaller and 35% lighter than Toyota's nickel-metal-hydride ones.
When Hyundai's current chairman took over in 1999 the emphasis changed from sales volume to quality - it adopted the Toyota Production System, Six Sigma, and implemented weekly quality meetings attended by the chairman. Hyundai now ranks ahead of Toyota on J.D. Power initial ownership surveys.
The firm is building a $5 billion steel mill in Korea that will focus on producing lightweight, high-tensile auto steel.

I have the fifth edition, 1971, of this 20-page publication, English Smocks with directions for making them. In it Ms Armes presents a brief history of English smocks, who wore them, their colors, materials and decoration. Detailed directions for making them follows, accompanied by 12 black and white photographs of actual smocks. Included, at least in my edition of the book, are 13 folded paper inserts detailing various embroidery designs identified by their county of origin and type of worker or occasion, eg Stafford & Shropshire Gardener and Warwick Shepherd Wedding Smock.

Kudo's to Max Miller for really nailing the issues that face smokers. This book is written in one-page segments - each of which hit's home in a unique way. I'm reading a page a day and have been a non-smoker for 7 weeks now. This is my companion in the morning instead of a smoke and it is really working. It is completely changing my mental image of smoking. I'm really cool now. Buy it if you've quit, buy it if you want to. Start reading....

The Best Stage Scenes of 1996 Review

The Best Stage Scenes of 1996
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book includes stage scenes of all types - from serious to comic to shades in between - to provide a varied, dramatic challenge for any actor/ess: professional, student or amateur. Here's an invaluable resource for auditions, acting classes, competitions and rehearsals. I've just won my first major acting role using one of the scenes from Paul Boakye, so quite apart from the other great pieces of writing in this book, his "Wicked Games" is my personal favourite. I'm sure I'm not the only reader to be squirming hotly in my seat as Helen and Leo flirt over their Tequila. Cos "Well, I would bet ... (Pulls out a cigarette and lights it to smoke.) That three Tequila Slammers are probably equivalent to one incredible orgasm. But ... I'd also bet that bad sex isn't even equivalent to one Tequila Slammer. Tequila Slammer is still better than bad sex." Some great writing, very funny, and great news for actors. Thanks.

Steam in the Heart: Life and Times Along the Morehead and North Fork Rails Review

Steam in the Heart: Life and Times Along the Morehead and North Fork Rails
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the heyday of the Morehead and North Fork Railroad, the following anecdote circulated in Morehead, Kentucky: Murvel Crosley, president of the M&NF from 1937 to 1959, supposedly presented himself at the main offices of the C&O Railroad and proposed to give its president a pass to ride the M&NF in exchange for a pass to ride the mighty C&O. When the C&O president laughed and said, "But your railroad is only a few miles long," Crosley shot back, "So? My railroad tracks are just as wide as yours."
Fred Brown's new book examines the Rowan and Morgan Counties area through the lens of the short line railroads, particularly the M&NF, that formed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to haul natural resources out of the eastern Kentucky hills. Brown begins in 1887, at the end of the feuding era in Rowan County, when "Morehead was refinding its moral compass"(7) and portrays the boom-and-bust atmosphere of speculation involving both locals and "Wall Street plungers."
The C&O line already ran through Morehead. Railroads with the life span of a mayfly sprang up to connect with it for the extraction of timber, coal, and stone. The M&NF achieved that link in 1906, an event that permanently shifted the center of commerce in the county from Farmers to Morehead. The main draw for investors was the old growth forest. In 1911, a yellow poplar felled in Rowan County yielded five sixteen foot logs before the first limb. Another log had a circumference of 27 feet (15). According to a Dr. Evans, in 1907 Rowan County "shipped five million staves to Germany and . . . ten million board feet of lumber were produced every year from 1895 to 1911."(131) The discovery of modest oil and gas reserves, as well as precious and semi-precious stones, boosted passenger traffic.
In serviceable prose, Brown tips in the national and regional picture but concentrates on portraying features along the line in loving detail--the perilous construction of the Clack Mountain Tunnel, the towns, the industries of Clearfield, the floods that swept away bridges and track. Well-chosen photographs and drawings augment the text.
By the early 1970s it was over, the forests depleted, the Lee Clay sewer pipe plant, by then the major user, eclipsed by plastic pipe. In 1973 the ICC approved cessation of operations for the M&NF; the "last official freight train" passed through Morehead in 1985. (155)
Brown has assembled a great many facts--perhaps to a fault--to recreate the times. Oddly, an article on a meteor that fell to earth in 1902 is included. The book will interest railroad buffs and regional historians as well as anyone with a taste for bygone eras. It is a useful addition to the historical literature featuring Morehead and its surrounding counties, which includes Don Flatt's history of Morehead State University, A Light to the Mountains; Jack Ellis' local histories; James McConkey's Rowan's Progress; Yvonne Baldwin's Cora Wilson Stewart and the Moonlight Schools; and Shirley Gish's Country Doctor: The Story of Claire Louise Caudill. Brown earlier teamed with Juanita Blair to write Days of Anger, Days of Tears concerning the Martin-Tolliver Feud.

During the first half of the 20th century railroads were the life-blood of the country. They carried passengers and commerce to every corner of the nation. In Kentucky, plans were made as early as 1891 for a railroad to link Morgan County's coal fields with the C&O Railroad at Morehead. In 1906 the Morehead & North Fork Railway linked with the C&O in Morehead and the town soon replaced Farmers as the commercial and industrial center of the region.

The Ultimate Pipe Book Review

The Ultimate Pipe Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"To paraphrase that venerable corncob connoisseur..." So begins the Foreword to Richard Hacker's book. And out of due reverence, I picked up my corncob pipe, packed it with my favorite tobacco, and began to indulge myself in a pleasure that I have known for years.
Hacker's dedication of this book to Joan reminds me that the first pipe I ever owned was a Father's Day gift. There was a paw print on the card indicating that our dog, Jacob, had given me the gift. I understood. It would be a couple more years before our oldest daughter was born.
Since then the number of my pipes has expanded and some have been retired. Before I read Richard Hacker's book, I knew that I liked to smoke a pipe. But my interest does not match Hacker's by a long shot. What might one want to know about pipe smoking? The origins? How to pick the right pipe? Pipe accessories? Collectable pipes? Hacker puts it all into his book.
Though I smoke a pipe myself, I have to admit that this book is by the ultimate pipe lover.

Laura Bush: An Intimate Portrait of the First Lady Review

Laura Bush: An Intimate Portrait of the First Lady
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved this book. I bought this book after reading a library copy.
This book is based on interviews with Laura Bush's friends. It reveals friendships that are full of caring, insight, jokes, loyalty and sincerity. I would like to be as good a friend to the people I love as I think Laura Bush is to the people she loves. Laura Bush is still friends with schoolmates from high school and college! And they are very smart and also funny!
In reading this book, I found out that Laura loves to clean. One of her friends said cleaning supplies are Laura's favorite substances. No one in my family feels that way! But I find Laura's attitude inspiring, funny and helpful. Now, when something around here needs cleaning, I think of Laura's enthusiasm. I find that it is much easier and more fun to tackle cleaning with enthusiasm than to go through it with a dismal attitude.

I liked Laura Bush before I read this book. Based on the impressions shared by her friends, it seems to me that she always tries to do her best but without taking herself too seriously. She is smart, sensible, witty and also kind. And she loves to read!! And I love to read!! And I love people who love to read!!
I liked her very much to begin with, and having read the book, I like her better. In fact, I have added Laura Bush to my virtual team and I consider her an awesome virtual friend and consultant.
I wish her well and thank her for her contributions as First Lady. Thank you, Laura!
I think this is an excellent book, with revealing insights into Laura Bush's friendships and life. It is not a snarky critical book and I was grateful for that. I'm not interested in snark and criticism (well, hardly at all). I'm interested in encouraging people to be their best and to enjoy life. I think this book does that, and I highly recommend it.

Tobacco in Song and Story Review

Tobacco in Song and Story
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I assume, in the lack of better evidence, that this is a reprint of the 1896 volume of the same title by John Bain, Jr., who was responsible for a later similar volume titled "Tobacco Leaves".
The book is a "commonplace book" of the sort popular during this period, collecting snippets of prose and poetry praising tobacco, usually jocular in nature. The nature and quality of the entries is characteristic of the period and entertaining if you like this sort of thing or need something to read in your smoking jacket.
If I am wrong in the above description, I would appreciate correction; I have a copy of the 1896 volume and have been researching antecedents for my own interest, although I have not been able to obtain much information on the volume.

After reading Chris's book, "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death," I was finally able to quit smoking within 5 days of completing the book. I have been a smoker for over 20 years and have tried everything on the market to quit, but was unable to do so, but this time was different for me. Using Chris's simple TCM method, I got down to 7 cigarettes, and then decided that I was never going to buy another pack. I quit cold turkey. I never missed it, and only had the cravings for a few days. Chris gave me the courage to conquer something I possibly never could have.
