Please allow me to preface this review by stating that I am a student of Dr. McKibben as well as one of his parishioners. With that bit of due diligence out of the way let me also state that this book is an outstanding addition to the body of Christian literary works. Dr. McKibben shows remarkable insight into the workings of the Holy Spirit in the lives of modern Christians. He illustrates his vision of just who the Holy Spirit is with a conversational style that is as engaging as it is entertaining. He punctuates his lessons with stories from his life and ministries that bring the reader face to face with real world situations that exemplify the work of the Holy Spirit. From the stories he conveys and his own research, he has built an exceptional work that reveals more about the nature of Grace than any other author I have read since Wesley. His book is easy to read, compelling in style, and full of insight. I heartily recommend this book for any Christian interested in the meaning of grace, the nature of the fruits of the spirit, or just an exceptional study of Christian spirituality.

Savagery of The Mountain Man (Mountain Man 37) Review

Savagery of The Mountain Man (Mountain Man 37)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just finished reading Savagery of the Mountain Man. I really think it is one of the best in the Johnstone series about Smoke Jensen. Many of the books about Smoke focus on his ability to defeat large groups of outlaws using his mountain man skills. This book is a little different in that it has more of a bent toward Pearlie, Smoke's longtime friend and boss of his horse ranch. Pearlie lost his wife in a previous book, and finds that he needs time alone. In this book we find out what happens during Pearlie's travels away from the Sugarloaf ranch. In the meantime, Smoke and Sally have a story of their own, and the two tales come together nicely in the end. Even if you have never read a book about Smoke and his friends and family, I think you will enjoy this one. There is enough background provided that you will know the characters. Lots of action, more insight into other characters, and the fact that it's not just another trek into the High Lonesome with Smoke make this a great read.

Blue Smoke and Murder CD Review

Very disappointing. The story line was lost totally by the time all of the details of art were dealt with. I bought the book but got the CD book from the library so started with that. I made it through the first half of the story but just couldn't take listening to the other half.

Jill Breck was just doing her job as a river guide when she saved the life of Lane Faroe, son of two of St. Kilda Consulting's premier operators. But when a string of ominous events—including a mysterious fire that kills her great-aunt and a furor in the Western art world raised by a dozen Breck family paintings—culminates in a threat to her life, Jill reluctantly calls in a favor.

Zach Balfour works part-time as a consultant for St. Kilda. His expertise is gathering and analyzing information from unlikely and often dangerous sources. Though he's got the skills to be a highly effective bodyguard, being a bullet catcher isn't his preferred way to spend time.

Protecting Jill will take him into familiar territory—among a strange, savagely competitive bunch of collectors who'll do anything to stay at the top. But Jill is in deeper waters than she's ever known; as she soon discovers, the perils of running wild rivers are tame compared with the hidden dangers in the high-stakes game of art collecting.

From the cozy rooms of the Breck homestead cabin to the cold multimillion-dollar galleries of the Western art circuit, Zach and Jill must race against time to unmask a ruthless killer hidden in a blue smoke of money, threats, lies, and death. . . .

I enjoyed listening to this audio CD. Plot was decent and story moved along well. I did find it sometimes difficult to tell who was talking when the conversation involved several people. Some of the narrator's voices for different characters were very similar.

The Last Track: A Mike Brody Novel Review

The Last Track: A Mike Brody Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Based on a strong buyer review here, I gave The Last Track a chance, and I'm glad I did. Hilliard is new on the mystery/thriller scene but he writes like a well-practiced pro. The plot has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing right to the end.
His characters, including Mike Brody, are believable and well thought out. In fact, Hilliard gives you just enough background to suck you in, but not quite enough to completely slack your thirst for Brody. (NOTE: I am a major Robert Parker fan and love Spenser.) This book demands a sequel.
The dialogue throughout keeps the story moving and the "24" style time breaks that the author used in place of chapter breaks adds to the suspense. This is made for book groups (I'm recommending it to mine), plane trips, beach reading, or anytime you just want to curl up with a great read.

Night Tales: Night Shift/ Night Shadow/ Nightshade/ Night Smoke Review

Night Tales: Night Shift/ Night Shadow/ Nightshade/ Night Smoke
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Four oldies but goodies from Nora Roberts. The woman continues to astound me with her ability to write so many great stories!NIGHT SHIFT: Edge of your seat suspense! Cilla O'Roarke is a night time DJ, she plays the greatest RR in the Denver, Colorado area. One night during the open line request portion of the show she gets a threatening phone call from someone who says he's going to kill her. Although Cilla is stubborn and doesn't want to call in the police, the manager of the radio station calls them in. Detective Boyd Fletcher is one of the two officers assigned to protect her and solve the case. The ensuing drama of catching the man threatening Cilla's life and the heated romance that begins between Cilla and Boyd keep the reader riveted right up to the last page. Highly recommended!
NIGHT SHADOW: Deborah O'Roarke, Cilla O'Roarke's sister from Night Shift, has graduated from law school, passed the bar exam and taken a job as Assistant District Attorney of Urbana. The hero of the piece is Gage Guthrie whose character bears a striking resemblance to Roarke in Nora Roberts series written as J.D. Robb. There's also a mystery hero who roams the streets at night, Nemesis, who reminded me a great deal of Batman! Deborah first encounters the illusive Nemesis when she is attacked one night after visiting a potential witness in a bad part of the city. The story has twists, turns and many surprises. A fantastic read that keeps the readers attention!
NIGHTSHADE: Lieutenant Althea Grayson was Detective Boyd Fletcher's partner in Night Shift. Now Boyd Fletcher is Captain and Althea ends up partnering with Private Investigator Colt Nightshade to find a young girl who ran away from home and was then abducted and held prisoner by a porn-video ring. Althea has her own past shadows that make her a tough cop and an even tougher woman. Colt is an old school friend of Boyd's and is in Denver to find the girl because her parents, old friends, asked that he intervene after they received a letter from a young woman who said she had seen their daughter. Sparks fly between Althea and Colt as she is a `by the books' copy and he is a `no rules apply' kind of guy. The mystery of the girls whereabouts and the powers behind the porno-video ring unfold to a dramatic and class A mystery ending. A terrific read, beginning to end.
NIGHT SMOKE: Natalie Fletcher, Boyd Fletcher's sister, is head of the Fletcher business empire. Natalie is fiercely working on the opening of a new chain of women's high class lingerie when the warehouse containing the majority of her stock burns down. Arson inspector Ryan Piasecki determines the fire is arson and sets out to uncover the motive and the criminal. Natalie and Ryan are exact opposites and immediately lock horns. This book brings back the characters from all the previous stories and it's great to meet them again. There's a dramatic conclusion to the story, with Nemesis lending a hand and the surprise of who is actually behind the fires and the motive.

I am one of the fortunate people to know this author, and have known her for
30 years. She apeaks from the heart, and is highly educated (as are her children & grandchildren), loving, and is so present , to this day. Lucky me, I visited her in her home state just a few days ago ~ she still has her
"Ruthie " laugh...
Enjoy the book, it's straight from her heart, which, albeit her physical strength is waning, is brimming with love and honesty.

In her revealing book I Smoke Pot with My Family, 85-year-old Ruth Bergner speaks out about the valuable and positive experiences she began having with just one puff of marijuana."Try it so you know what the hell you are talking about," her valedictorian son challenged in 1970.Ruthie and her husband were surprised to discover that, contrary to what they "knew" about pot, the drug actually enhanced many areas of their lives instead of interfering.Excited about what she was experiencing, she began to write a book.Reluctant and fearful of what the exposé could do to her family's name, she kept it hidden beneath her bathroom sink.

Now, after more than thirty years of personal experience and secrecy, Bergner hopes to make an important contribution to the world by sharing her story. She insists that we control the drug; it doesn't control us.She writes that when used intelligently and responsibly, marijuana can promote comfortable intimacy, improve family relationships, dissipate anger and judgment, temporarily erase sexual hang-ups, make us less defensive, and give us a fresh perspective on life.Bergner wants marijuana reclassified from the "bad drug" category to the "good drug" category. She calls on other respectable people who smoke pot to stand up, speak out and smoke responsibly with her.
"Bergner's honesty...is one more step up the ladder to removing the lid ofmisinformation and dishonesty about (marijuana). She is, indeed, onebrave pioneer."—Wayne B. Whitmarsh, Medicinal Cannabis/Industrial Hemp Advocate

"(Bergner's) coming out makes it easier for the next person to do the same."—Keith Stroup, Founder of NORML

Stirring up a motherlode of trouble for the retired gunslinger was Slater's first mistake. Shooting Smoke Jensen's wife Sally was his second. He wasn't going to live to make a third.

Britt Shelley is a cool confident reporter in Charleston always after a good story, and when her old flame Jay Burgess tells her he has a scoop that will launch her career, she is immediately intrigued. They meet for drinks, and Britt notices that Jay was not acting like his normal slick self. He informs her that he is terminally ill, but that is not the big story he has for her. Jay asks Britt to go to his home where they will not be overheard by anyone. As they get ready to leave the bar, Britt is not feeling well and is very unsteady on her feet. When she wakes up next to Jay in bed, she can't believe she had so much to drink that she blacked out because she has no memory of them being together. After she cleans up, Britt is horrified to discover that Jay isn't merely sleeping off a drunk, but is in fact dead. She is suspected of murder when the cause of death is disclosed. Before she has the opportunity to answer to any of the allegations against her, she is kidnapped from her home.
Rayley Gannon has been searching for answers as to how he ended up in bed with a dead girl. He was never charged with any crime, but was disgraced in the eyes of the department, and forced to resign his coveted job of arson investigator. When he heard the story about Britt, he knew she could help him search for answers. It couldn't be a coincidence that their stories were so similar. Since she reported on his case, Rayley knew she wouldn't be willing to just sit down and talk with him, so he did the only thing he could think of that will allow him to accomplish his goal. He broke into her house and took her by force. When Britt and Rayley looked at the facts in both of their stories, they were convinced that something nefarious was behind the trouble they had seen. As they teamed up together, they soon realized that someone was willing to go to any lengths to protect an old deadly secret.
This is the best book I have read by SB in a long time. Her last couple of books weren't up to the caliber I expect from this accomplished writer. This story had all the components for a great read. Rayley and Britt are both such strong and complex characters. When they pull their resources and come together to prove their innocence, they are unstoppable. I am always amazed at the intricate detailed web SB can spin. This is one you won't want to miss.

I hate cook books that have a million recipies. I get tired of looking before I decide on one. This book zeros in on a handfull of spicy bold dishes. It looks like each one is someones favorite and they have all been good so far. I have had this book for many years and am writing this review because I found myself online looking for some copies for friends. Get 'em while they last. It's a great addition to any grilling library.

As any lover of Brian K Vaughan could tell you, this guy is a genius. Whether it's a group of misfit, teen-age, evil-villian-parent-murdering crimestoppers; a family of bomb-dodging lions that escape a half-demolished zoo in Baghdad; a man named Yoric who survives a "plague" that wipes out every male on earth (except him and his pet capuchin Ampersand); or, in the case of Ex Machina, a hero-turned-polictician who just happens to be able to communicate with machinery, Vaughan delivers, every time. NOBODY who calls themselves comic book geek can live without reading this series. END OF REVIEW :):)

Liveson's poems are short poignant vignettes which expose the frailities and pain which people experience as they confront sickness . His works also however include celebratory paeans to the triumph of the human spirit as reflected in the "small" moments of life. His poetry is incredibly accessible to readers on many levels.

excellent book. one of the best of the newer ones. the earlier books written by william w like the eagles series had more indepth characters. You almost felt like you knew them. this book was not that involved in making you feel like you cared about them. this simply told a good story. Not a book I would read a second time, like i do the others. but a good read anyway
