Firefighter Oral Exam Study Guide Review

I am a firefighter/paramedic and used this book to help me prepare for my interview last year. The book is somewhat choppy and has some repetitive questions.... but overall its a great starting point for those of us who dont naturally shine in interviews. Like what was previously said, dont mouth the given answers verbatim, but they do a good job of helping you understand the "power words and phrases" that interviewers want to hear. Use the suggested answers to form your own creative responses. Oh... and, wear a suit and tie to the interview, wait to be asked to take a seat, shake all hands while looking them in the eye before and after the interview, and try your best to remember names. Also - when answering questions, focus your attention mostly on the person who asked, but dont forget to look at the other members as well. There's my two cents... obviously it worked. Im a paid guy now. Good luck!

A Great Day to Fight Fire: Mann Gulch, 1949 Review

A Great Day to Fight Fire: Mann Gulch, 1949
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mark Matthews has written about the Mann Gulch fire before, and avid readers of firefighting literature may readily recognize both his style and the events. But what makes A GREAT DAY TO FIGHT FIRE memorable is its different focus on the people who fought the fire, rather than just strategies and events. Chapters in A GREAT DAY TO FIGHT FIRE focuses on the victim's families and the personal impact of the fire upon firefighters, family members, survivors, and community members: as such it's an essential piece of information key to any collection strong in firefighting literature - and any general-interest library interested in true-life heroism.

Very poorly written. So bad that I quit after a few chapters. It's too bad the author didn't have the services of a good editor to assist in making the story of an interesting career into an interesting read.

Fire Fighters: Stories of Survival from the Front Lines of Firefighting (Adrenaline)

I was disappointed in this book. I found the majority of material to be related to 9/11 or to wildland firefighting while the cover implies it covers all ranges of firefighting. The material included is good...it just spends very little time on structural firefighting and the men who do that job. What time it does dedicate to it is mostly in the form of re-hash of previous material; Report from Engine Co 82, Working etc. There are better books out there, unless you are interested in wildland firefighting. If you are, then this is one of the better books on the subject.

Firefighters have long been among the most admired men and women in our culture, and recent events have shown how well-placed that admiration is-adding fuel to our innate fascination with stories about fire and the people who risk their lives to fight it. Some of our best writers are drawn to the subject of firefighting, and over the years they have created a rich body of literature. Fire Fighters offers the most exciting and compelling stories from that body of work, including accounts of devastating fires from New York to Yellowstone, as well as smaller blazes that have turned particularly ugly or dangerous. Selections include Jimmy Breslin's eulogy for the men who died in the famous Chelsea fire, Norman McLean on the Great Gulch forest fire that killed nine young smokejumpers, John McPhee on fires in the Pine Barrens, Studs Terkel's interview with a fire fighter, and riveting accounts of the FDNY's role in the September 11 tragedy and its aftermath. 16 black-and-white photos are also featured.

I found this book to be very moving. It makes you feel as though you are right there with Gary and his fellow firefighters as they try to save their neighborhoods.I found the book to be very hard to put down and found myself thinking about the book during the day.At times, I was brought to tears as I read about the homes that were destroyed and the pets that were displaced by this awful fire. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys real life adventures.

I can't come up with the words to describe how bad this book is. It's completely full of typos, spelling errors and duplicate facts/phrases (on the same page even). Worst of all there are many errors in the answer sheets and practice tests so you never really know if you've studied the correct facts. I cannot imagine that anyone proofread this book before going to press.
Skip this one, it's seriously not worth the time to pick it up and there are better study guides out there.

A good book that touches on the everyday calls. A lot of books explain the extreme incidents and tactics. This one helps with what to look for and be aware of with the mundane calls. Keeping in mind that the mundane can become the extreme. I would give a great recommendation and it is an easy read.

Collapse of Burning Buildings: A Guide to Fireground Safety Review

Collapse of Burning Buildings: A Guide to Fireground Safety
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is very well written, providing the reader a clear overview of the collapse hazards presented by a burning building. The organization of the chapters makes the book a valuable resource for a fire service instructor - complete with a "lessons learned" section at the end of the chapters.
The only downside to the book is that it is written primarily from the urban perspective - but then, that's where Vincent Dunn got his experience.
I'm hoping for a new edition; one that focuses more attention on the dangers of lightweight wood construction, and considers the challenges of the rural fire service.
In the meantime, though, the current edition provides a thorough foundation in building collapse (based on building construction) for a fire fighter or fire officer.

Chief Vincent Dunn, a 42-year fire service veteran, has updated his best-selling book which examines the dangers of structural failure caused by fire. This is the second edition of the first textbook written to warn firefighters, company officers, and fire chiefs about exactly how structures collapse when destroyed by fire--and examines the subject of burning building collapse in great detail. More importantly, this book, unlike any other publication, instructs firefighters and fire officers in how to survive burning building collapse.

Where There's Smoke (To Serve and Protect 3) Review

Where There's Smoke (To Serve and Protect 3)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This isn't a bad or terrible story; it just wasn't a good read for me personally. When I'd finished it, I felt as if I could have better spent my time reading something else.
There were a couple of things I did love about this book. It is an interracial romance, which I happen to love. The heroine Kate is white and the hero Toby is half black and half NA. And Toby is the other thing I loved about this book. Besides being a non-white hero, he is a hunky firefighter, and he is so caring and gentle with Kate. He really has the patience of a saint when dealing with her. And that brings me to what in the book I didn't like.
Spoilers--------------
Kate is trying to get over being raped three years ago. This is the main conflict between them throughout the book. I sympathized with her and her past, with her panic attacks and anxiety. I know that panic can take control, causing you to react instinctively, without even knowing what you are doing. What I didn't like was how this stretched on and on, seeming more like filler than actual story to me. I understand that she will have setbacks, given her abuse and rape, but the back and forth between doubt and trust, even after they had had sex, even after the exchange of I love you's? Kate says she loves Toby, that he is the most understanding and caring of men, and then she is overcome with enough doubt to even think that Toby would torch her pub?
I really don't get how Kate can have enough trust to accept Toby into her life, into her past, and into her bed, yet still consider he could do something so malicious and spiteful as destroying her place. Even knowing what Toby had almost done as a teenager doesn't justify her doubt in my opinion. This is the man who, after three years of fear, she let love her and touch her all over in the most intimate of ways; this suspicion and distrust of him just didn't make sense. While Kate's confusion and doubt are understandable in the beginning, it soon became tedious to me.
The other thing that bothered me was the baddie. I figured who it was and it still made no sense that this would be the person doing all this to Kate. I just didn't buy the reasoning behind it. That could have been done a lot better, or maybe it should have been another character doing it. I didn't buy the 'surprise' of who the bad guy was.
While I loved Toby, it's not enough to make me say I liked this story. To me, this is just an average or okay read, and this review is just my opinion. I can't say I hated it, but neither can I say I liked it.

The Stokes and Escamilla families have always been close. Their kids have grown up together and the males of the household are all members of the same firehouse. But is there more history here than the kids know? And what will happen when thing finally blow up?
Lauren Stokes and Seth Escamilla have been close friends for years. They tell each other about their loves and their lives. But one thing that Seth has never figured out is that Lauren has been in love with him for years. But, what will happen when during a fateful family get- together, Seth accidentally injures Lauren? Especially when he takes her home to care for her, and sees her in a bit of a different light. Now he is confused by his emotions. But just as Lauren and Seth start to explore their feelings, things with their parents go "super nova" and nothing will ever be the same. Will their new and old relationships be the fallout of their parent's deeds?
Wow pull up the tissues for this one. I made the mistake of reading Where there's Smoke on my e-reader while at work and then I had to explain why I was crying. I don't recommend this awkwardness to anyone, so make sure you are reading it at home. I loved how the main characters both were forced to "grow up" during this story. I was encouraged that the author didn't take the short route and gloss over the hurt that these characters felt. I also hope there will be more stories about the hot Firefighters in Seth's house. I found Where there's Smoke was a very well written story with not only hot love scenes but also hot emotions. That is what compelled me to make Where there's Smoke a Joyfully Reviewed title for April.

I read this author's first book, Modern Day Drifter, and said I would like to see her add some depth and complexity to her story. Well, she certainly added those items for this book. In Through Smoke, the characters were well-developed and the story was well-plotted. I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen with Mikey, Casey, and Eve. I cared about these characters and wanted to see their lives settle down and be good for them. Mikey and Casey are brothers and seemed very different from each other at first, but I don't think they were really that different. Casey was a true drug addict and gambler and Mikey struggles with alcohol. They had lost their father when they were very young and had a tough time dealing with his death, having never really grieved properly. Although their brotherly relationship has issues and Casey's gambling debts cause both brothers to become involved with a violent bookie, the love between the brothers is always evident. Eve is Mikey's love interest and also likeable. Their relationship develops and grows throughout the story, and they seem to be good for each other. This book held my interest until the end. It was filled with action and emotion, and I recommend it to others.

This book has helped me immensely in improving my firefighter interview skills. I went from not passing interviews to being hired as a firefighter. The important thing that Chief Lepore does in this book is help people understand the logic and thought processes behind answering interview questions. Anyone can memorize a textbook answer, but once you understand the logic behind it you are then able to dynamically answer any question thrown your way and it will be an answer that is from the heart.
