Buried in Wolf Lake Review

In the second book BURIED IN WOLF LAKE of the series A Winnebago County Mystery Thriller by Christine Husom, the heroine that we have come to know and love, Sergeant Corinne "Corky" Aleckson has been thrust into another frightfully in-depth investigation to find the identity of a psychopathic killer who targets women with specific features. After a family dog returns home with a young woman's dismembered leg, the investigation ensues as the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department attempts to unveil the mysteries buried in Wolf Lake. Will they work fast enough to keep another victim from the clutches of the evil that lurks nearby?
Christine Husom uses her past experience from when she worked for a sheriff's department to fill her books with realistic scenarios. Although fictionalized, the books are based on actual incidents. Christine has a natural talent when it comes to being able to immerse her readers into her books. The characters and atmosphere are rich in detail and realistic. I have to give Christine Husom great credit for being able to achieve such balance and readability. Her imaginativeness is to be commended and celebrated.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery/suspense or psychological thriller. I almost hesitate to label the book within these categories, because while the content is intense, it's not overboard. I would hate for anyone to pass up the opportunity to read this series based on book genre. Furthermore, the characters really become familiar and respected as you follow their daily lives and become immersed in their friendships, families and love lives.
Personally, I admire this series. After reading Murder in Winnebago County, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the sequel. I read Buried in Wolf Lake in one day. I couldn't stand to put the book down for long, because I was always wondering what would come with the flip of the page. The passion that Christine Husum writes with is powerful and compelling. I'm looking forward to reading the next installment and have high hopes that Christine will continue with this series. Do yourself a favor and pick this book up. Once you do, you'll be hard-pressed to set it back down.

Queen of Dragons (The Drakon, Book 3) Review

Queen of Dragons (The Drakon, Book 3)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
***SPOILERS***
After very much enjoying both The Dream Thief and The Smoke Thief, I was greatly anticipating Queen of Dragons. From the very beginning, however, I found myself not as connected to the story. Part of that may be due to the fact that I honestly don't remember much about Princess Maricara from the last book, and this one starts off expecting us to. Part of it may be due to the fact that Maricara is not an easy person to sympathize with and relate to. She is immediately portrayed as different from the rest of the Drakon, and although I normally sympathize with the outsider, she comes across as cold and distant and unlikeable. Sure, she was forced to marry the evil and abusive leader of the Carpathian Drakon when she was only nine and I'm sure suffered greatly at his hands, but Shana Abe's writing is rather vague and distant and detached about all this. I wasn't sure how much her horrible marriage affected Maricara (although I'm sure it was supposed to) because the character herself never really talked or thought about it. And the fact that it wasn't dealt with more just made me confused and frustrated.
Another problem I had with this book, which is a problem that I've had with the other two but which seemed more glaringly obvious and outrageous, is the lack of choice given to the female characters. Despite being forced into a marriage and raped by her husband (she was only nine- of course it was rape, but again all this was just hinted at vaguely) Maricara was then betrothed without her knowledge or consent at the age of FIFTEEN. It was hard enough to read about what was hinted about regarding her marriage at nine, but for then the alleged good guys to turn around and do the same thing was just appalling and disgusting to me. And all that happens by page 11, at which time I was immediately pre-disposed to hating not just our hero, but all the men of the drakon council who agreed to this, and the entire drakon society for allowing this to happen to a child. Needless to say, the romance didn't work for me at all. It's a romance book, after all, so it's no surprise that they eventually fall in love, but Kimber spent most of the book chasing her and contemplating imprisoning her, and that just isn't a convincing story of love for me.
The other part of the story is the plot about the sanf inimicus- the group of drakon hunters. Although they've been inactive, but known about until recently at the Carpathian Mountains, their presence is a new and scary threat to the once invincible English drakon. A young drakon girl goes missing, and then Kimber's brother is taken as well, but NOTHING happens with this story line beyond a minor skirmish. The fact that nothing was resolved about the sanf inimicus may be the most frustrating aspect about this novel. Queen of Dragons is set up and written so that you believe the big confrontation with the sanf inimicus will happen, but that's not true. Nothing happens beyond a brief fight with a small number of their group. No questions are answered.
Kimber's parents have also gone missing in the very beginning and that mystery is left dangling for the next book or two. Other characters make mysterious appearances, but nothing is explained or resolved. I could hardly believe it when I got to the last page- it felt like a hundred or more pages were missing. It was beyond frustrating. I remembered the first two books being mostly stand alone with a little hinted about for the next, but nothing like what happened here. It was seriously upsetting, and has left me questioning whether I'm going to continue reading a series where only more questions are asked rather than answered.
After delivering two good, solid books in this series, Shana Abe's third Drakon book severely disappoints. Characters are not well developed, not understandable, not relatable and not even likable. The romance felt too coerced and unsettling for me to enjoy. The male dominated drakon society led by an entirely male council which essentially imprisons the drakon in Darkfrith -just made me increasingly angry. And lastly, the plot about drakon hunters which is what I believed this book was about, was never dealt with. I would advise against reading Queen of Dragons altogether, but at the very least until the next book is published.

Chasing Fire Review

Chasing Fire
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Rowan Tripp loves being a smoke jumper and fighting fire with her fellow jumpers. But this year things are different. Last season her jump partner died in a fire and his death is not so easy to deal with. And then there's Gull Curry, a rookie smoke jumper, who seems to be seriously interested in Rowan. Normally she doesn't mix work and play but Gull is not that easy to discourage and pretty tempting. When a murder happens and Rowan is in danger, she realizes that maybe leaning on Gull and letting him into her life might be not such a bad idea.
Will Rowan and Gull's relationship make it through the fire season and will they be able to stop the murderer before he kills one of them? When I get a new book by Nora Roberts I always feel a bit like a kid in a candy store. She is my favourite author and once again created an amazing novel. "Chasing Fire" is about a group of smoke jumpers and after reading the book I think that what they do is amazingly brave and absolutly crazy.
At first I needed some pages to get into the language used between the smoke jumpers because it's a bit different from Nora Robert's usual style (there's a lot of ribbing and the tone between the jumpers is casual and blunt). But after the first ten pages I appreciated the way the book is written because I felt that it fit to the smoke jumpers and the constant danger they are in.
I loved reading about the main characters Rowan and Gull. Rowan is strong woman, she is hard but also fair. She is a good trainer and team leader. I loved the scenes in which she trained the new smoke jumpers. The way she supported them and joked with them was admirable.
Gull is a hero after my own heart. He's intelligent, interested in a lot of different things and seems to live his life exactly the way he wants to. Together he and Rowan make a wonderful pair. Their banters were very entertaining and I loved the scenes in which Rowan let him into her heart.
I also liked that there is a second, smaller love story between Rowan's father and a woman he meets. Their relationship is so sweet and shows that you are never too old to find love.
Besides the two main characters I especially loved reading about the camaraderie of the smoke jumpers and about their missions. The smoke jumpers are like a small family, they love to rib each other and there are a lot of funny scenes between them. To read about them fighting the fire was thrilling and made this book a fast read. I was always interested in reading about their operations and I was impressed that with every jump into the flames they risked their lifes.
The suspense part of the book fits to the fire theme. The first murder is like a spark that sets the murderer on fire and makes him unpredictable and dangerous for everyone. I had a suspicion about who the killer might but was never sure about it.
covers
I like both the UK and US cover, they fit to the fire theme and look interesting.
final appraisal
"Chasing Fire" has everything a great romantic suspence novel needs. The story is thrilling and fascinating, there are two wonderful love stories in the book, the camaraderie between the smoke jumpers is amazing and their fight against the fire is breathtaking.

The number-one New York Times-bestselling author delves into the world of elite firefighters who thrive on danger and adrenaline--men and women who wouldn't know how to live life if it wasn't on the edge. There's little as thrilling as firefighting--at least to Rowan Tripp. The Missoula smoke jumpers are in Rowan's blood: her father is a legend. She's been fighting fires since her eighteenth birthday. At this point, returning to the wilds of Montana for the season feels like coming home--even with reminders of the partner she lost last season still lingering. Fortunately, this year's rookie crop is one of the strongest ever--and Gulliver Curry's one of the best. He's also a walking contradiction, a hotshot firefighter with a big vocabulary and a winter job at a kids' arcade. Everything is thrown off balance when a dark presence lashes out against Rowan, looking to blame someone for last year's tragedy. Rowan knows she can't complicate things with Gull--any distractions in the air or on the ground could mean the end--but if she doesn't find someone she can lean on, she may not make it through the summer. . . .

Okay, I'll admit it, I'm a huge fan of Colleen Coble--have been since the Rock Harbor series. But her latest, FIRE DANCER is my absolute favorite. Her characters, Tess and Chase, leap off the page and come to life. I felt like I was in Arizona, personally deep into the plot. An arsonist takes things to a personal level for Tess, and her family's ranch. Tess and her longtime rival, Chase, must work together to unsmoke the villain, and save not only the ranch, but the forests from the Fire Dancer. Get the book....you'll be in for quite the ride. I give it my highest rating!

I highly recommend "Murder in Winnebago County" by Christine Husom to anyone who appreciates a good mystery. I particularly liked the insight that is provided into the plotting mind of the killer. Although you never quite know what will happen next. Also, Sgt. Corky Aleckson is a well-drawn and believable protagonist. I expect to read more of her adventures in the near future.
"Murder in Winnebago County" is a really good read.

Lover Enshrined (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 6) Review

Lover Enshrined (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 6)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
*No spoilers*
I started out reading Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series because I enjoy the Paranormal Romance genre. The love stories in the prequels to LEn are excellent (with the exception of Lover Unbound) IMHO. But it looks like this series has come to a fork in the road. Choosing the Urban Fantasy route verses the Paranormal Romance one. I don't mind the change in genre so much (as Ward is a captivating writer) but others might and may feel duped. So you've been warned.
I didn't particularly care for the romance in this book. A quick recap: Phury is the Primale. Essentially the Brother chosen to breed more Brothers. He is the sire of a 'harem' of forty Chosen females. Phury is supposed to mate with them and produce many children, the males of which will hopefully become the warriors (Brothers) who defend the vampire race from the evil lessers. Phury's first mate is Cormia. Their romance is tepid at best. I did not *see* them fall in love at all. More like I got the vibe that Cormia is merely a soothing and gentle influence on Phury's tumultuous life. She came across as a helpful friend rather than mate potential. Not the I-would-die-without-your-love feeling I got in the previous books. Since those books were so smack down emotional, I hoped this one would be too. I just didn't feel it.But, BUT, and this is a big one. The rest of the book rocks! As I recall the lessers were sadly missing in LU. They are back in a BIG way here in LEn, specifically with the Omega making multiple appearances. John, Qhuinn and Blaylock also all have prominent roles in this book. Their stories make major advancements as well. With tons of surprises. And Rhevenge's and Xhex's characters are spot lighted too. There are also some very interesting twists (including new characters) to the series which leads me to believe that Ward is going in the Urban fantasy direction.
So although I think the romance is lack luster, the rest of the book is keeper material. I don't mind that LEn read more like three stories in one rather than a central romance with two subplots. Fans of Paranormal **Romance** will be VERY disappointed. But I still recommend reading LEn just for the advancement of other character's plots. Skip this one if your in it for the romance or wait to get the book at the library if your skeptical.
And for anyone new to the series? Don't start here! You'll miss out on a lot of the back story. These books are NOT meant to be read stand alone. Besides the previous books have some awesome romance.

Master of Fire (Berkley Sensation) Review

Master of Fire (Berkley Sensation)
Average Reviews:

This is kind of an aside from the rest of the Magevese series. It is about Logan (Author's son) and Giada. The characters are well drawn and even the spear carriers are interesting. The menace this time is from an unexpected source and is fairly interesting.
So why 3 stars (a bit better than average for the genre). Some inconsistencies; as I remember Logan is some kind of corporate raider type not a bomb disposal guy. A mortar is a gadget used to fire a round not the thing that explodes (see the [...] article). Then there's the place where its a rifle in one paragraph and a shotgun in the next. Not as many or as obtrusive as some other publishers and authors but still annoying. Then there's the main characters. How does a small county sheriff department afford a bomb disposal and forensic chemist. I live in a small county and the Sheriff's department uses volunteers from the local fire districts (the districts pay for the training and certification out of their budgets) as arson investigators and forensics guys and relies on the state for bomb disposal and chemist support.
While the erotic scenes are nicely done, they don't save a somewhat weak plot.
BTW while this can be read standalone at least some familiarity with the mageverse will help it make sense (particularly the stories about the wolves).

Zane, the young thief, from SMOKE THIEF has grown into a formidable man. He is the head of a very unique and prosperous gang of thieves. The draken of Darkfirth have used his abilities and underlings many times. Zane is the only human to know the truth about the draken, he is the only human they trust. Now is the time to recover the lost Draumr, a diamond that can control the draken. None of the draken are able to stand it's presence and none have been able to find it. It is more of a legend than a truth. But now it's song is heard by most of the draken and someone must be sent to find the diamond. Zane is promised 60,000 gold pieces to retrieve the diamond and return it to the draken. Unfortunately, he will find something he desires more than money. And Draumr may be the only way to gain it. Zane is not told of the powers of the diamond, nor is he told of the danger it holds for the draken.
Amalia, one of the daughters of Rue and Kristin, the rulers of the draken, has a special connection to the diamond. She also has the gift of foretelling. She has not revealed any of these powers to her family. As a matter of fact her family thinks her powerless because she can't turn to smoke nor dragon. When she is 14 she sees in a vision that Zane will be her lover and husband, but she also sees that he will be touched by the power of Draumr. Her dreams show the destruction of her family and the draken by Zane. Now at the age of 19 the song of the diamond calls to her strongly and somehow she must try to change destiny and hope she can save the man she loves and her family. Yet unknown to her, there are other players in the game, her dreams have never shown her these things. With a full heart and a knowledge that things must be changed she leaves her school to follow Zane and force him to take her with him.
This is a wonderful story full of romance and adventure. From the ballrooms of London to the ballrooms of the last Castle in the Carpathian Mountains we are carried along on the wings of legend and love. Shanna Abe is a wonderful storyteller, her unique take on dragons and magic make this one of those wonderful new fairytales for adults.
I couldn't put it down. If you have read SMOKE THIEF you might enjoy it even more, but it is not necessary. I can't wait for the next book. I surely hope there will be one.

She was content until Carter Madison came into her life. He was trying to finish his novel, and needed some peace and quiet to complete it. They both felt the attraction, but he was her friend Alicia's fiancé. As they both try to fight their feelings, they fight a losing battle.
This is one of the first Sandra Brown books I read, and find myself pulling it out to reread it again and again. It is a classic story.

Van Diemen at 17 Review

Van Diemen at 17

Great characters, a foreign setting, lots of bratty mean girls, a prissy schoolmarm, and a hot guy to die for. The prescription for a page turner. Jeania Kimbrough's VAN DIEMEN AT 17 has it all, but never slips into genre cliches.
When an over-achieving American high school student decides to complete her senior year as a foreign exchange student in Tasmania, she encounters unanticipated expectations that bring her face to face with her biggest fear: failure. Throw in a sophisticated medical student from a prominent Tasmanian family and you have the recipe for a disastrous romance and unpredictable consequences that reverberate through the exchange program community.
I loved this book. It is told simply, with deep attention to the emotional complexity of even the secondary characters, but especially the star-crossed protagonists, who are lovingly crafted. As the story pulled me in I also gained insight into a culture that, like most Americans, completely intrigues me -- how similar the English speaking residents are, and yet how vastly different.
It was my pleasure to have Jeania Kimbrough as a student for several years, and she has made me very proud with this lovely story that goes beyond its coming of age roots to explore the impact change has on human beings and their relationships. I recommend Van Diemen at 17 to anyone interested in reading about triumphs of the human spirit.

Mayne Attraction: In The Spotlight Review

Mayne Attraction: In The Spotlight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book took me forever to read. Now, that wasn't the book or the author's fault; it was mine. I was so busy that I didn't have any time to sit down and enjoy this novel. But when I had a night alone, I devoured about half of this humungous book as quick as I could.
Ellery is a really good protagonist. Though she is sometimes too intelligent to believe, she carries the story well and has a quirky personality that was easy to relate to. Her friends she meets along the way were fun and loving, though they kept secrets just like everyone else in this book seemed to do.
The fight for Ellery's heart is fought between Ash Ryan and Grayson Gregory. While reading, my mind kept fluctuating between the two suitors, trying to pinpoint who would be the better match for Ellery. But just like Ellery, I was at a lost. I think I know who I am rooting for at this point, Ash, but with two more books in this series, one told from Grey's and the other from Ash's point of view, my opinion could certainly change.
The writing in this book was definitely a high point. Mauren shows that she has a strong command over the English language with her powerful diction choices, descriptive writing, and the overall ability to keep readers engaged with an interesting story.
The story in this novel was one of the most unique young adult books I have ever read. The complexity of it all shows that Mauren was thinking the plot out well before she dived into writing this book. She had it all planned out and showed it in this groundbreaking debut. I loved following Ellery, Ash, and Grayson on their fun and intense adventures over the course of In the Spotlight. However, the plot did move pretty slowly and I feel a lot of content could have been removed to make this a quicker read.
Ann Mauren is definitely an author to watch. I cannot wait for the sequels to In the Spotlight, In the Shadow and In the Smoke. Though I will miss Ellery's narration, I am looking forward to seeing into the minds of Ash and Grey.

Night Tales: Night Shift/ Night Shadow/ Nightshade/ Night Smoke Review

Night Tales: Night Shift/ Night Shadow/ Nightshade/ Night Smoke
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Four oldies but goodies from Nora Roberts. The woman continues to astound me with her ability to write so many great stories!NIGHT SHIFT: Edge of your seat suspense! Cilla O'Roarke is a night time DJ, she plays the greatest RR in the Denver, Colorado area. One night during the open line request portion of the show she gets a threatening phone call from someone who says he's going to kill her. Although Cilla is stubborn and doesn't want to call in the police, the manager of the radio station calls them in. Detective Boyd Fletcher is one of the two officers assigned to protect her and solve the case. The ensuing drama of catching the man threatening Cilla's life and the heated romance that begins between Cilla and Boyd keep the reader riveted right up to the last page. Highly recommended!
NIGHT SHADOW: Deborah O'Roarke, Cilla O'Roarke's sister from Night Shift, has graduated from law school, passed the bar exam and taken a job as Assistant District Attorney of Urbana. The hero of the piece is Gage Guthrie whose character bears a striking resemblance to Roarke in Nora Roberts series written as J.D. Robb. There's also a mystery hero who roams the streets at night, Nemesis, who reminded me a great deal of Batman! Deborah first encounters the illusive Nemesis when she is attacked one night after visiting a potential witness in a bad part of the city. The story has twists, turns and many surprises. A fantastic read that keeps the readers attention!
NIGHTSHADE: Lieutenant Althea Grayson was Detective Boyd Fletcher's partner in Night Shift. Now Boyd Fletcher is Captain and Althea ends up partnering with Private Investigator Colt Nightshade to find a young girl who ran away from home and was then abducted and held prisoner by a porn-video ring. Althea has her own past shadows that make her a tough cop and an even tougher woman. Colt is an old school friend of Boyd's and is in Denver to find the girl because her parents, old friends, asked that he intervene after they received a letter from a young woman who said she had seen their daughter. Sparks fly between Althea and Colt as she is a `by the books' copy and he is a `no rules apply' kind of guy. The mystery of the girls whereabouts and the powers behind the porno-video ring unfold to a dramatic and class A mystery ending. A terrific read, beginning to end.
NIGHT SMOKE: Natalie Fletcher, Boyd Fletcher's sister, is head of the Fletcher business empire. Natalie is fiercely working on the opening of a new chain of women's high class lingerie when the warehouse containing the majority of her stock burns down. Arson inspector Ryan Piasecki determines the fire is arson and sets out to uncover the motive and the criminal. Natalie and Ryan are exact opposites and immediately lock horns. This book brings back the characters from all the previous stories and it's great to meet them again. There's a dramatic conclusion to the story, with Nemesis lending a hand and the surprise of who is actually behind the fires and the motive.

Love and Smoke is steamy alright, fascinating story, complicated plot, great descriptive writing. However, the romance between the main characters, Riva and Noel, is seriously lacking in warmth. They have passion enough, the few times they are together, but the side character of Dante is far more intriguing. He has laughter and kindness, and his romance with another character was so much better.
We never get to know Noel well enough, and Riva doesn't know him that much better than we do. Blake gives more insight into the workings of Gallant's mind than Noel's - the villain has a lot more presence. The dramatic subplot endangering the main characters is a lot more compelling than the central romance.
Noel has looks, nobility of spirit, and exaggerated martyrdom, but his character is not magnetic. ...

I was instantly pulled into the the novel after reading the first few paragraphs. The story begins with Chiristie McCoy waiting for something. That something is never revealed. A man named DC invades her house and attacks her. Throughout the novel she is determined to find out why, with the help of her soon to be ex-husband Sam. In addition to attacking Christie, DC also kidnaps a little girl named Jessica. There are many plot twists, which always make you raise an eyebrow, and after completing a chapter you find yourself hating DC even more. This was a good read and I recommend this book to anyone who loves to be on the edge of their seat.

The Justice Peak, Montana fire is raging out of control. In charge of putting out the conflagration out is Mattie McCullogh, the first female firefighter commanding a Forest service team. Already struggling with her male peers who demand the brass fire her and a hostile media expecting impossible miracles to occur, Mattie also worries about her son being in the front lines in the war with the inferno.

When her son's team dies in what is obviously arson, her superiors sacrifice Mattie to the public howling and fire her. To her surprise, her son's body is not recovered. Unable to sit back and accept being a scapegoat, Mattie begins her own inquires into finding a serial arsonist. She also plans to find out exactly what has happened to her son. Along the way she finds some help, but is unaware that her foe is watching and waiting.

SMOKE EATERS is a non-stop action filled plot that takes the readers on a wild ride from page one to the climax. The characters are fully developed and their reaction to the environment feels genuine to the point that the audience will swear they can smell, see, and hear the inferno. The taut story line will receive much acclaim from critics and fans as Christine Andreae has written one of the years top thrillers.
