Cigar Talk: Conversations of the herf Review

Cigar Talk: Conversations of the herf

Dr. Terry Simpson takes us non-smokers into the world of the herf, and the world of cigar smokers. While his story is educational (regarding cigars) to those of us on the outside, it is the way he tells the touching stories that draws the reader in. He is a masterful storyteller, and his book a fun read.

The Gentle Art of Smoking Review

The Gentle Art of Smoking
Average Reviews:

This book was published in 1954, is 177 pages long, measures 8.25" x 5.25" x 7/8" thick. Hard board covers and I believe was issued without a dust jacket. Published in NY by Putnam's sons. The book covers all the bases from the history of tobacco, to the history of the match, to tobacco for smoking by pipe, cigar and cigarettes, growing tobacco, cigarette manufacturing and pipe manufacturing. In fact much of the pipe manufacturing information in the book appears to be where Hacker got much of the info in his book The Ultimate Pipe Book. The little 1954 book is a great one and a quick read, will teach you thing you didn't know, and I would recommend it for those interested in pipe smoking.

A Cigar Journal Review

A Cigar Journal

I have had the pleasure of smoking some fine cigars in my time, may-of-which were quite memorable because of context. This book gives you a great opportunity to document all the demensions of your particular cigar experience down to the wrapper color, smoke, ash, etc. You can paste cigar bands into the book and make comments in the blank notes area. For the price it is a great find. Not extremely large, can hold about 50 smokes. Great book to start a serial collection with though.

Nat Sherman's a Passion for Cigars: Selecting, Preserving, Smoking, and Savoring One of Life's Greatest Pleasures

Sherman's book is a good introduction to the art of cigars. The glimpse into the history of one of NY's premier cigar establishments is especially interesting, and the graphics are good. On the downside, I think the author spends too much time promoting his own brands, and occasionally strays from the core subject.

Renewed interest in one of life's most affordable luxuries--cigars--has grown into a nationwide trend. i picked up this book wanting to know more about cigars. this book did not disappoint. it was very informative and useful. the photography was excellent, so excellent, in fact, that looking at all those stogies made my mouth water. so sit down with a nice glass of cognac, a nice cuban, and read "The Cigar".

What do Charlie Chaplin, Ulysses S. Grant, Franz Liszt, Al Capone, George Sand, and Sharon Stone have in common? The love of a fine cigar. Barnaby Conrad III, author of The Martini and an avid fan of cigars himself, has dedicated his new book to the poetic, historical, and artistic pursuit of this wonderful, timeless passion. Drawing upon examples from art, film, literature, and politics, The Cigar presents a lushly illustrated, fascinating social history, honoring the cigar's origins and development, as well as its sexy and everlasting allure. Witty and elegant, The Cigar is the perfect gift for male or female cigar aficionados.

The Health Benefits of Tobacco Review

The Health Benefits of Tobacco
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr. Douglass is known for his anti-establishment hyperbole, and it serves him well in creating his saleable persona. While there are very good benefits of limited use of the natural tobacco leaf, this should not cause us to ignore the very real dangers of cigarettes and their additives. Not to mention the stench.
That said, my guess is that the previous one-star reviewer has not read this book. Dr. Douglass does a good job of presenting some of the fallacies of the anti-tobacco lobby and benefits of tobacco. Read the fine print and you'll find that he also does not approve of cigarettes and their additives or over-use of tobacco. He is quite harsh on the tobacco companies.
Benefits of smoking include the well-known protective effect from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. However, sometimes Dr. Douglass can gild the lily, such as pointing to the combination of higher smoking and lower specific disease rates in Asia compared to the U.S. Even though he ignores the fact to gild his hyperbolic lily, I am sure Dr. Douglass must be aware of the reason: green tea. Even the staid NCI (National Cancer Institute) has reported on the protection that green tea catechins offer from cancer. Investigations have borne out the fact that here in Asia green-tea-drinkers who smoke have lower cancer rates than American smokers, but Asian non-green-tea-drinkers who smoke do not have lower cancer rates.
All in all a good book, and it is good to have a doctor willing to stand up to the fascists, but you will have to overlook the hyperbole.

This little book is an excellent introductory work to smoking pipes and tobacco that a beginner or "professional" pipe smoker will enjoy. The author has a nice formal style that makes reading even the more technical material pleasant. A great book to add to your library.

The road to true pipe smoking pleasure is neither long nor hard. A good pipe properly filled with carefully selected tobaccos, and smoked with care and skill, will reward its owner with unmatched taste and aroma. The pipe smoker never seeks stimulation through inhaling. On the contrary, the very act of lighting the pipe and smoking it will take his mind off his troubles and induce a relaxed frame of mind. The sole purpose of this book is to help the smoker achieve these rare moments of serenity, which are increasingly hard to come by in the accelerating pace of the modern world.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As I'm fond of telling whoever will listen, I never touched alcohol until I went to seminary. Cigars are an even more recently acquired vice. My older brother got me into Macanudos, and since then I've enjoyed Avos, Buteras, and Arturo Fuentes. I'm even a regular at a Portland cigar bar, where I unwind after a long workweek with tawny port, long stogie, and a good book. I've learned enough about cigars to be dangerous, so I wanted a more formal knowledge base about them. Therefore, I decided to pick up this guide.
"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars" is a fine introduction to the cigar world. Tad Gage has a deep affection for cigars, and he writes in a clear, enthusiastic manner about them. He explains the different types of cigars, the procedure for smoking one, and proper storage. In addition to this practical advice, Mr. Gage reveals the history of cigars, how they are made, and the reality behind the whole Cuban tobacco mystique. He even devotes a chapter to pipe smoking for those so inclined. At the book's end is a rating list of many common brands, along with a mild to full-bodied flavor chart. So far Mr. Gage's tastes have mirrored my own, so I look forward to trying more of his favorites (such as Davidoff and Fuente Fuente OpusX).
I understand that there's a backlash towards tobacco, and one should count the cost before indulging. But life is short, and certain pleasures in moderation aren't a bad thing. It's a shame that my home state (Washington) has banned smoking in public places. I patronized a number of Seattle's cigar bars back in the day, and I miss them. But at least Oregon hasn't jumped on the prohibition bandwagon. At any rate, if you are interested in becoming a cigar aficionado, then start with "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars." Long ashes to you!

Unless you are an absolute beginner, this book has nothing to teach you. If you are a beginner, there is more and better information on the internet. It is really a pamphlet rather than a book, despite the $9.97 price tag even for the Kindle version. Typical is the "chapter" on the history of cigars, which is a whole five (short) paragraphs long.
The pamphlet is put out by [...]. They evidently value cash over editing, because there are many grammatical errors. My favorite is a self-promotion blurb that reads, "[...] is a new site coming soon with practical information about the fun, exciting, ridicules (sic), and interesting things you can do with a little cash." "Ridicules" indeed.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars, 2nd Edition Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars, 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've smoked cigars in the past, even expensive ones. But, similar to my journey into wine, I was too shy to walk into a fine cigar store and ask what I thought were stupid questions about size, shape, and even the circumference of a cigar. I didn't know what made a smoke mild or robust, or why I seemed to prefer to the milder ones. In part, its a matter of taste, but as you read this book, you also learn there's a standard for most cigars, and then one can experiment with more robust or even exotic blends. After reading the book I have a great idea of what I want to look for going forward--the country, the style, the length and ring size, and what type of tobacco and wrapper will provide the taste I'm looking for. I've also learned what to pay for a good cigar, and when (and when not to!) splurge for those more expensive smokes.

Smoke: Cigars and Men That Enjoy Them Review

Smoke: Cigars and Men That Enjoy Them
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you haven't had a chance to get this book, go buy it. Andrew McDiarmid does a wonderful job of grasping erotic mental imagery with heart squeezing love. I am sorry I didn't get a copy while I was at Smokeout.
The story that grabbed me the most was the nine chapters of "The Hunt". I am neither submissive nor dominate, but the love story behind it made me very emotional. Loving someone is not about how good a person looks or how much leather they wear. It's about who they are and what they are about. It's not about that quick rush of pleasure or 'getting off'. It's about getting to know someone for their hidden joys and things that make them cry. It's about touching ones heart strings in a way that their shear presence is undeniable. In the story, a leather daddy called Maximillian sees a young furry leather pup named Marcus on a subway train. Maximillian is called a brethren. Marcus is a someone who enjoys everything entailed in being a leather submissive. Maximillian is an older, in light terms, cigar smoking leather muscle daddy bear. Marcus is a fur covered 'pup' who does boot black at a bar in the Castro. Marcus is searching for that one daddy to take him as his own. I am not going to give away the meaning of what a 'Brethren' is because you really need to read the story and Andrew's book.
The story has 9 parts to it and, besides the obvious erotic content, has an underlying love story that I think we all want in our lives. I was in tears by the end of the story because I realized that the men I have dated never really took the time to get to know the real me. All they wanted to know was the sexual person that I am. They never got to know the true me. Maximillian courted, in terms, Marcus through a period of time. They both taught each other things only a difference in age could do. Marcus introduced Maximillian to new music and art, while Maximillian introduced Marcus to how he wanted to be serviced and he true life as a Brethren. Only till all truths came out could the two be bonded forever.
We all strive for love in our lives, but taking the time to do it is key. Being intimate with that one person is ok, but get to know them for who they are. You may be surprised.
Go buy the book and read the chapters of "The Hunt" and you will understand what I am talking about.
