What's the true test of whether it's a good book or not? When you can't bear to put it down and you don't want it to end, it's a good book! Greeley has characters with whom you can identify, a plot that keeps you going and a setting that makes you long for those big old houses by a pristine lake on summer days uncomplicated by bumper to bumper traffic and air pollution. I read the other reviews and wonder if everybody is so uptight these days that they can't imagine just laying back under an oak tree and reading a good book - not a great book, not a great work of literature. Just a good book. Lighten up, get a life, smell the flowers and learn to love just a "good" book.

Isle of Dogs Review

It's hard to believe that the creator of Kay Scarpetta wrote this. The humor is lowbrow, the situations and characters are crass and unbelievable, the plot is weak. Cornwell's created a universe where everyone is on the decline, or never got high enough to have a decline. They are ugly, stupid and rotten except for the shrinking Hammer and the irritating Brazil. It's tough to read a book where literally every piece of action requires someone to be incredibly stupid. It's beyond farce, it's even beyond slapstick. It's just stupid. If this book were written by anyone other than Cornwell it would never have been published.

Pyro: A Novel of Suspense Review

Pyro: A Novel of Suspense
Average Reviews:

Paul Wollf, Emerson's newest protagonist, is another superlative example of a deeply flawed individual who wins the reader's sympathy despite some character traits which, if Wolff were a real person, would make a sane person keep him at the proverbial barge pole's distance. But make no mistake, Emerson has not recreated his previous hero, Swope, in Wollf. Where Swope was a mindless womanizer, Wollf is a shy guy who knows he's not good enough for a good woman. Where Swope was a popular guy around the firehouse, Wollf holds the entire world at bay, his sternly leashed violence like a guard dog between him and his fellow creatures. But as in "Into the Inferno" Emerson does tell a thumping good action yarn all the while interlacing it with the hero's movement towards self-discovery. If Swope was the guy you hoped would be taking you home after the party, then Wollf is the guy you hope you're waking up with on a quiet Sunday morning.
As always, Emerson's well-honed descriptions and his ear for dialogue boost a story that in less gifted hands might end up merely workmanlike. Example: "I suck dark smoke all the way up. It tastes like the undercarriage of a fertilizer truck might." What an image! Makes me want a swig of Listerine bad!
Another plus for this author -- and some may disagree with me on this, but so what? They'll be wrong! -- is that he is so NOT afraid to stretch his skills, I mean really work at his craft, and the proof is in how he told this story from so many different points of view and still made the story cohesive and kept the flow of events and emotions constant. That can't have been easy, and it had to have been a conscious choice right from the beginning of the book.
I wish I wasn't going to have to wait another year or more for the next book by Earl Emerson. And I wish he'd do another book tour through the Midwest sometime! Why does the left coast get all the breaks?
Thanks, too, Mr. Emerson, for the opening quote from Elmer Slezak. I miss him!

I can't understand all the horrible reviews this book got. I almost didn't read it because of them, but I loved Hornets Nest so figured I'd give it a shot and I'm really glad I did. I went into this book not expecting a whole lot due to the negative reviews, and I was pleasently surprised. I really enjoyed this book and the characters, I found it a very funny, entertaining and light story. I'm glad I didn't listen to the majority of bad reviews and hope that Ms. Cornwell will continue the series with another story involving Hammer, West and Brazil (as well as many more Scarpetta novels!).

The Last Track: A Mike Brody Novel Review

The Last Track: A Mike Brody Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Based on a strong buyer review here, I gave The Last Track a chance, and I'm glad I did. Hilliard is new on the mystery/thriller scene but he writes like a well-practiced pro. The plot has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing right to the end.
His characters, including Mike Brody, are believable and well thought out. In fact, Hilliard gives you just enough background to suck you in, but not quite enough to completely slack your thirst for Brody. (NOTE: I am a major Robert Parker fan and love Spenser.) This book demands a sequel.
The dialogue throughout keeps the story moving and the "24" style time breaks that the author used in place of chapter breaks adds to the suspense. This is made for book groups (I'm recommending it to mine), plane trips, beach reading, or anytime you just want to curl up with a great read.

The Girl Born of Smoke Review

The Girl Born of Smoke
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A Girl Born of Smoke starts off with an young girl, Aurora, running from a mysterious man and finding sanctuary with two strangers. After I read the first few chapters, I thought I knew what was going on, but I was wrong. Jessica Billings spins a tale that takes you through fascinating and unexpected twists and turns that truly leave you guessing about what is going to happen next. The moment you think you know who the good guys are, you will find yourself proven wrong in the next paragraph. I managed to catch on to some of the twists, but one took me by surprise and had me eagerly reading more.
Beyond the well-crafted story line, the characters are diverse and distinctive and a pleasure to get to know as the story progresses.
This is an excellent first novel of a new author who I hope will be writing more.

This is vintage Francis,a fine example of why Dick Francis' books are so very good. The hero is not a jockey, but an actor. As usual, Francis avoids stereotypes and gives his protagonist some complexity, best shown here in a poignant depiction of family life. Like all Francis protagonists, he's observant, wily, tough, determined, and a guy capable of thinking "outside the box." Technology and politics are dated, of course, but the plot can still hold me gripped from cover to cover, each time I reread it.
There are a handful or so of Francis books that are not set in England. Of those, SMOKESCREEN (set in South Africa) and BLOOD SPORT (in the US) rank among my favorites.
The torture section of this book is absolutely harrowing. You will never forget it.

It's All Smoke & Mirrors (Chronicles of Shawn Donnelly) Review

It's All Smoke and Mirrors (Chronicles of Shawn Donnelly)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In Greek mythology Cassandra was given the gift of prophecy by Apollo and then cursed by him when he made sure that no one would believe her. Shawn Donelly must carry some of Cassandra's genetic material in her blood, with a slight twist. Shawn has inherited a sixth sense from her Irish grandmothers. The problem is that Shawn is the queen of misdirection. She usually figures out "what" is wrong, but she invariably is confused about "who" created the problem. Shawn bumbles her way through three mysteries, sometimes helped by old friends from college, but often hindered by them also. In the first she comes to suspect all of her friends when they are isolated in a mountain cabin and one of them is murdered. The second has Shawn convinced the grizzly serial killer who is terrorizing men in the city is working in the cubicle near hers. In the final story, the interactive murder theater that Shawn and her friends are performing for an audience becomes more realistic than what they rehearsed. As Shawn stumbles around trying to solve the mysteries, she will have the reader wondering, if she was your friend, would you laugh with her or have her committed to an institution?
These stories are fresh and go in directions the reader will not anticipate. At times it's not certain whether a character should be liked or slapped, but they're definitely fun to read about. This book is definitely worth spending a few hours with.

When Shawn Donnelly gets into trouble, she does it well. She can't even go on a little weekend getaway with her old college chums without running into a corpse or two.And to top things off, her new co-worker seems to have a very unnatural interest in the serial killer that's running rampant in the Detroit metro area. It's no wonder why Shawn decides to take up a nice, safe hobby like theatre. No matter what Shawn does--from falling in love with a woman who might be a murderer, to breaking into a co-worker's home in search of dead bodies--she does it with her own flair.Join Therese Szymanski as she takes a walk on the sillier side of the gritty crime scene detective novel and introduces readers to her newest alternate personality--Shawn Donnelly.

Smoke Screen Review

First of all, the people who have written poor reviews of this book are clearly demanding that authors stay within the cookie cutter format of novel writing. I was surprised and pleased to see that Mr. Mills has expanded his horizons.
The key to a Kyle Mills book is taking a scenario in the real world and focus in on 3-5 main points or hooks and ignore the rest. With a narrow perspective on the world we're able, with only a small stretch of the imagination, to sit back and go on a fun ride. I can see how this is disappointing or frustrating for some because you're screaming at the book, "what about second hand smoke?!?" By focusing on some key points the author expects the reader to suspend disbelief. This isn't for everyone but for those it works for it's an incredibly fun ride.
His characters are wonderful; although the main character's love interest is a little under-developed.
I highly recommend this book to anyone.

This book, again, like the Disapperance, had me guessing again. I could not put this book down! Normally, I can figure out who the guilty person is by the middle of a book I'm reading, but, again, Freedmand had me totally stunned! The outcome of the story was totally shocking, I never would have guessed, and I didn't. The only thing that bothered me about this book, was, I thought there was too much sex in the book. I didn't really see how it had anything to do with the story, it didn't seem to pertain to the story at all. Other then that, this book was totally enjoyable, and another great read! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

Smoke & Mirrors Review

Smoke and Mirrors
Average Reviews:

John Ramsey Miller is the new king of rock 'n' roll. As Exhibit A of that proposition, I am respectfully setting forth SMOKE & MIRRORS, his latest Winter Massey thriller. Miller has been moving his Massey mythos right along, painstakingly developing his character in a number of different settings and situations, so that neither the hero nor the story has become repetitive, predictable or stale. Along the way he has continued to raise his own bar and jump over it with each successive work.
Having said that, SMOKE & MIRRORS is going to be tough for even Miller to top, given its solid, non-stop action, served up with complex but comprehensible plotting and rugged characterization. It begins sedately enough --- at least for a page or two --- with Massey partaking in a hunting trip in the Mississippi delta country just below Memphis. His sojourn is interrupted by Sheriff Brad Barnett, an old friend of Massey's who brings terrible news. A 19-year-old babysitter has been killed by a high-velocity shot in what appears to be an unfortunate but otherwise innocent hunting accident.
There are two things, however, that bring Massey into the investigation. The first is the presence of one of Massey's business cards in the area from which the shot was apparently fired. The second is of profound significance to him: a solitary red toothpick, soaked in oil of cloves, which is also found nearby. The toothpick is the calling card of Paulus Styer, a nightmarish assassin who is more than Massey's equal and who, at the last meeting of the two men, almost ended Massey's life. Styer is a master of murder and of disguises, and his presence, even as it puts Massey on guard, makes him wonder Why here? And why now?
The answer is tied to a powerful gambling conglomerate with tentacles that reach from the statehouse of Mississippi all the way into the halls of the Federal government. A major gaming resort is planned for the Tunica County area, and the only thing standing in the way is the reticence of a sole landowner. Given that literally billions of dollars are riding on the successful completion of the project, the land must be obtained either conventionally or otherwise.
Styer is capable of providing pressure in frightening but effective ways, and in the instant case he sees not only the opportunity to complete a job but also to settle his unfinished business with Massey. Styer and Massey play a cat-and-mouse game throughout, with Styer at times hiding in plain sight. FBI agent Alexa Keen, featured most recently in TOO FAR GONE, is there to help, but Styer is so clever and diabolical that even with the odds stacked against him, he appears to hold all of the cards. The book plays out to an extended, cataclysmic climax, one from which none of the parties involved will escape unchanged.
Miller lobs plot-point hand grenades into SMOKE & MIRRORS from start to finish, bringing surprise after surprise to the page just when the reader thinks it's safe to draw a breath. And no sooner is it over than the beginning of Miller's next novel, a stand-alone work titled THE LAST DAY, is previewed in the back. It simply doesn't get any better than this.

Silver Smoke (Seven Halos #1) Review

Silver Smoke (Seven Halos #1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I stumbled across Monica Leonelle's breakout novel "Silver Smoke" by sheer chance and ultimately couldn't put the book down. The book is centred on Brie and Pilot Van Rossum, who have been exiled to Honolulu following the tragic death of their mother. However, Brie is not convinced that her mother's death was an accident and is determined to find out what really happened. Brie's first answers come from a group of cheerleaders at her new school - who confess that Brie (and themselves) are not normal teenagers... they are descendents of archangels, known as Hallows, who are sent to protect human (earthlie) souls from the archdemons descendents, known as Nephilim's. As if learning that you are superhuman isn't enough, Brie also learns that there are more than just the Nephilim that are her enemies.
Leonelle has managed to create a fascinating world that is rich and vibrant. The bonds of family and friends are the heart of this novel but it also challenges the demarcation of good and evil and what one is willing to do for the love of another. Her complex world of Hallows and Nephilim's are both refreshing and much needed in the fantasy genre, which currently seems over-whelmed with vampire tales. Finally, I cannot wait for the next instalment ;-)

15-year old Brie van Rossum wants to know what caused her mother's death, but she's trapped in Honolulu under the watchful eye of her rock star father James, her overprotective older brother Pilot, and the relentless paparazzi who would love to capture her breaking down on film.

A clue about her mother's death finally comes in the form of four teenage girls--or at least, that's what Brie thought they were when she met them on the first day of high school. The girls are not normal teenagers, but Hallows--descendants of archangels and humans--with supernatural powers that allow them to manipulate matter and cross miles of beach in seconds. Brie learns that she is a Hallow too, just like her late mother.

But Brie's family has enemies--specifically the New Order, a group that killed most of Brie s family before the last survivors went into hiding one hundred years ago. Brie's new friends don t think the New Order killed Brie s mother, but that begs the question--who did?

Now, Brie faces a choice--she can follow the clues her mother has left behind, and risk exposing her family to a death sentence from the New Order; or she can stay in Honolulu and keep her family safe, but forsake the Hallows to the New Order's firm fist.

The Seven Halos series consists of seven books about seven humans who are descendants of archangels and archdemons. Each of them must uncover the chilling (and sometimes sinister) mysteries of their lineage in order to save two races of superbeings from an all out war that no one can win. It is a story of love, death, heartbreak, betrayal, and the one thing that matters most--allegiance.

Blood and Smoke (audio book) Review

Blood and Smoke (audio book)
Average Reviews:

This audio book was a nice surprise from Mr. King. Just in time for the holidays, like a Christmas present from my favorite author. This title is only available on audio, so don't bother looking for a book version. It is 3 stories read by the author himself, all dealing with smoking, hence the title, and you can't have a Stephen King book without a little blood. This audio is cleverly packaged like a cigarette box and even contains a warning label not to listen to in the dark. A true treat for any Stephen King fan.
"1408"~is about a bestselling author of true ghost stories who faces the ultimate challenge: spend a night in New York City's most haunted hotelroom--and he must live to write about it without the help of his ex-best friends, his cigarettes.
"In The Deathroom"~This one is about a man who is held captive in South American and discovers smoking isn't always hazardous to your health.
"Lunch at the Gotham Cafe"~is about a man going through some intensely painful times--his wife has just left him and he's just quit smoking. He's hoping for a reconciliation, but what happens when he meets his estranged wife and her lawyer for lunch at a cafe in NYC will shock you.

White Smoke: A Novel of Papal Election Review

White Smoke: A Novel of Papal Election
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of those books that after you've read it, you can't tell if it was worth your time or not.
I learned a bit about the Papal election process, and I learned a LOT about what a particular part of the priesthood thinks about the current and previous Popes.
However, as other reviewers have noted, the characterization is paper thin, the plotting is silly, the "bad guys" in the Roman curia are mainly faceless and without redemption, and the "good guys" are completely without fault. I'd go further to add that the bias shown by the supposedly objective reporters in the novel is so severe that the characters cease to be believable in their own right, and become "mouthpieces" for the author.
Now, for fans of Greeley, I'm sure this will be a satisfying read... For those neutral to his particular style, (and it can get really thick, particularly the dialogue) I suspect it might not be. Before I picked up "White Smoke", the last time I read a Greeley novel was over 12 years ago. I liked that book. I don't much care for this one.
