Create Your Own Stage Effects (Create Your Own Stage Series) Review

Create Your Own Stage Effects (Create Your Own Stage Series)

Another in the popular series of 'Create Your Own...' theatre books, Create Your Own Stage Effects is aimed primarily at the small scale or amateur level. The main theatrical effects topics are covered including lighting, sound and scenic effects, costume, fast changes, transformations, projection, make-up, properties, pyrotechnics, weather effects, fire, smoke and water, as well as historical and futuristic settings.
The effects are well covered from a practical standpoint with step by step instructions and safety measures. Budget considerations also feature, with many cost-effective and ingenious methods explored, though production values and professional results are not sacrificed to achieve this.
Like the other books in the series, Create Your Own Stage Effects offers a good foundation for the student or less experienced in an informal and accessible format that also lends itself well as a teaching aid. A useful and versatile book

Lauren, Ryan, and Simone meet again after the tragedy that brought them all together ten years ago. A serial killer is on the loose in Detroit, murdering men and leaving her mark, and each of these women has a motive to kill. Simone, a sexual abuse survivor and advocate for young girls, has begun to heal her wounds over the past ten years, but she is still trying to reclaim her life. Her mother, Jessica, thinks it's unhealthy for Simone to immerse herself into a world of pain and jaded love when she has yet to fully heal herself. A new, unexpected love interest only complicates things further. Ryan is willing to do whatever it takes to become a mother, even if it means betrayal. With her biological clock screaming and a shameful ten-year secret bubbling to the surface, Ryan is determined to get what she wants, but she may lose her husband-and her mind-in the process. Lauren, one of Detroit's most prominent defense attorneys, redefines justice and seeks a way out of the career that has left her feeling trapped and torn. She can't set her moral standards aside for a $400,000 salary, winning acquittal after acquittal for the demonstratively guilty. But how far will she go to rid Detroit of its criminal filth? As Lauren, Ryan, and Simone's lives collide yet again, forcing them to deal with the tragedies of their pasts, the three women regretfully learn that no one is safe behind the thin shield of a Smoke Screen.

Smoke over Birkenau (Jewish Lives) Review

Smoke over Birkenau (Jewish Lives)

I have read many books on the Holocaust, and I have to say that each one is unique - the horrors of the experiences as narrated by those who actually experienced them are always tinged with a personal touch and make for a disturbing yet unforgettable reading experience.
Liana Millu's "Smoke Over Birkenau" [translated here from the Italian] recounts her experiences in Birkenau during the Holocaust. Many compare her experiences as the female version of Primo Levi's [another Italian Jew] "Survival in Auschwitz". The stories in here describe the immense suffering endured by the camp's inmates and as witnessed by Liana during her incarceration. Years after reading this [and I've reread it many times since], I can still recall some of the details in these stories - they are simply unforgettable. Stories such as Lili Marlene whose beauty dooms her when she attracts the attention of a male Kapo who is already 'spoken' for, the one about the female inmate Maria who tries in vain to conceal her pregnancy and stubbornly refuses to abort thus sealing her ultimate fate, the tragic fate of a mother and son who choose to end their lives rather than endure the Nazis' bestiality, and many more. These stories of women who endured the unimaginable will resonate with readers and is a must-read for anyone with an interest in the Holocaust - it truly brings to light man's capacity for evil and at the same time provides a compelling portrait of human resilience, courage and faith in the darkest of times.
