It didn't matter that the warrant was years old, or that Smoke Jensen had been cleared of all charges. A Texas bounty hunter believed he could still collect $10,000 for killing Jensen, and he intended to do just that. But when he and his men came calling, Jensen was nowhere to be found. So they took the next best thing -- Smoke's woman -- left a ransom note, and headed for the Rocky Mountains.

once again Smoke is off to help a friend. This time its to help his friend monte recover his kidnapped wife. Once again mr johnstone starts out fine with his character but uses too many flash backs it seems like hes writing too much or something and had to have many fill in flashbacks. Since lamour died he has been one of my favortie writers but im starting to get away from his series books and going for his new character books.

Ambush Of The Mountain Man Review

Ambush Of The Mountain Man

Don't read this book....unless you're prepared to read the ton of other
books in the "Smoke Jensen and Preacher" series. This author writes a book
before breakfast and another just before dinner. They're plentiful and
highly addictive. Suspend belief and enjoy.
Smoke Jensen, in particular, shoots or fist fights around a hundred
hard cases per book and they all highly deserve the mayhem he delivers.
In spite of this high fiction (most famous old West gunfighters only
killed 3 or 4 men in their entire lives) you'll soldier on with the
series because Smoke Jensen is the stuff heros are made of and the
writing is crisp and moving.
Just don't say you weren't warned when you find that you spent your whole
summer (or winter) in a comfy chair with 50 or so of these read books
strewn around you.

Smoke Jensen never wanted to kill, but fate had other plans, and the Mountain Man has left plenty of blood, tears, and fury in his wake. Angus MacDougal, the father of one of Smoke's victims, wants revenge. Riding up to Big Rock, Colorado, MacDougal has decided that killing Smoke won't be enough. He intends to bring him back to Pueblo and hang him before a crowd. It's a bloodthirsty plan that might have worked, except for a beautiful young woman, and the small knife she slips into Smoke's hand. Suddenly Smoke is on the run in the Colorado wilderness with no gun, no supplies, and twenty armed men in pursuit. Once, a man named Preacher taught Smoke how to survive in this wilderness. Now, as a brutal winter bears down, the Mountain Man will use those lessons well - not only to fight his way out alive, but also for vengeance of his own...

Law of The Mountain Man (Mountain Man 5) Review

Law of The Mountain Man (Mountain Man 5)
Average Reviews:

This particular series of books featuring Smoke Jensen have fiercly dedicated fans. I"m only a casual reader but I buy these books as gifts for a family friend who is serving a prison sentence. I am rating these based on his reviews. He tells me these are the perfect escape books for people who are either incarcerated or perhaps disabled or elderly. The action is fast-paced and the descriptions of the Western frontier are authentically detailed. He appreciates that WWJ often refers to historic events of interest and will try and tie the story in with those happenings. Reading this series and the Preacher Series by the same author has motivated him to ask for non-fiction books about the Frontier and the Old West.
There are currently 34 books in this series and the first 28 or so were written totally by WWJ. The later books were collaborations with his niece Jo Johnstone. WWJ himself passed away a few years ago in 2004 or 2006 depending on your source, and Jo has taken over most of the continuing series. However, readers didn't even realize the man had died until his publisher 'fessed up so I would assume that the current writer is keeping with the same tried and true formula that fans expect when they buy one of these books.
If you know somebody who could use a little escape to this time period, you really can't go wrong with these books. The only thing I would say is to be aware that his politics are on the conservative side. This doesn't figure much in the westerns but in his Post-apocalypse series ASHES, it's front and center. Many fans of Westerns have never gotten around to that series but I'm just puttin' it out there for you so you know.

Cinders & Smoke: A Mile by Mile Guide for the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Review

Cinders and Smoke: A Mile by Mile Guide for the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

I purchased "Cinders' and Smoke" for an impending photography trip to SW Colorado. I specifically wanted to get pictures of the trains amid the aspens. I found the book extremely helpful in knowing where we were as we traveled up to Silverton. I hope to someday hike part of the trip with my camera and take pictures along the way. The details in this book are sufficient to make such a trip possible. There is now a newer version of this book which I also purchased. The route details are much less shown and described but the color photographs make it more of a "picture" book. Both books are really good. when talking with the workers employed by the owners of the train I was repeatedly told that they preferred the "Cinders and Smoke" book over the newer version. I think it depends on what you are looking for. I would personally recommend either one but really liked the detail in this book because of the maps that showed the route the whole way. The new version has very limited maps. If you like trains and especially an exciting ride then this book is for you. Just a suggestion, the trip is a long one and I would recommend perhaps taking the train up to Silverton and returning by bus. We were totally exhausted upon our return by train. Finally, buy some clear glasses at the station for $3 before boarding the train. the Cinders and Smoke can really irritate the eyes!
