The Gentle Art of Smoking Review

The Gentle Art of Smoking
Average Reviews:

This book was published in 1954, is 177 pages long, measures 8.25" x 5.25" x 7/8" thick. Hard board covers and I believe was issued without a dust jacket. Published in NY by Putnam's sons. The book covers all the bases from the history of tobacco, to the history of the match, to tobacco for smoking by pipe, cigar and cigarettes, growing tobacco, cigarette manufacturing and pipe manufacturing. In fact much of the pipe manufacturing information in the book appears to be where Hacker got much of the info in his book The Ultimate Pipe Book. The little 1954 book is a great one and a quick read, will teach you thing you didn't know, and I would recommend it for those interested in pipe smoking.

Dissecting Antismokers' Brains Review

Dissecting Antismokers' Brains
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has changed my life dramatically. I was deceived by all the misinformation surrounding SHS even though I realized that things just did not add up, I had no proof.
Thanks to Dissecting Antismokers' Brains I now feel totally vindicated and the sense of guilt from this pleasure is pretty much erased. The book is straight forward, thoughtful and well orgnaized. It states all the facts which are easily verified and when you are finished you find yourself wanting more.
When non-smokers read this book they, rightfully so, are outraged to discover that they have been used as pawns in a power stuggle by an elite group of people who are making millions from this. Factor in drug companies making millions from nicotine replacement products and most media outlets threatened with monetary loss if anything positive can be said about SHS and you have the biggest social lie of this generation.
What is happening right now in the free world is nothing short of criminal, akin to organized crime at it's best. Antismoking groups have no real evidence against SHS, just half-truths and outright lies through manipulation. This is racketeering on a world wide scale and most are unaware of this. The newly approved smoking treaty which just came into effect now holds third world countries as hostages who must comply or else. This is extortion and a violation of basic human rights!
We are all victims of these groups whose main goals are power and money but the biggest victims of all are our children. While money, time, media hype and other resources have been wasted on the BIG LIE the use of drugs and alcohol has sky rocketed in young people, STD rates continue to soar and poverty continues to rise. Antismoking groups are apathetic to these REAL problems while continuing to manufacture false data to reap in even more money. These are taxpayers dollars being wasted while freedom of choice is being stripped away.
Finally, for those of you wondering, I am independant of any tobacco companies or other interest groups in this area. I have never met Michael nor have I even had a conversation with him. This book stands on it's own merits, more than I can say for anything published by the antismokers. Read it, you will be amazed and you will even get a few chuckles from his light humour injected throughout. When you are finished send it to someone with some real political clout, someone who will ask the hard questions and expose these criminals for who they really are.

"Dissecting Antismokers' Brains" is a blend of hard science, linguistic analysis, humor, and easy reading that most readers will find irresistible, whether they smoke or not.A table filled with numbers describing the chemical content of tobacco smoke is followed by the comment that to get a day's Recommended Daily Allowance of cholesterol an individual would have to sit in a room with smokers for over 600 years. The author goes on to recommend a good prime rib instead. The scary picture of our minds being sculpted by those with money and power is softened by the image of a National Guardsman facing down a pack of Virginia Slims with a loaded M-16.And the statistics that always seem so fearful when one opens a scientific journal are pared down, explained, and presented in such a way that anyone with the beginnings of a high school education will feel comfortable with them rather than daunted by them. The various "types" of Antismokers and their motivations are analyzed carefully, and sometimes quite disturbingly, as the author builds the base for his meticulous examination of their arguments."Dissection" is indeed an appropriate word for what one will find in these pages, but it's "Dissection" with an undercurrent of personal touch and humor that does indeed make it an irresistible read.

The Health Benefits of Tobacco Review

The Health Benefits of Tobacco
Average Reviews:

Dr. Douglass is known for his anti-establishment hyperbole, and it serves him well in creating his saleable persona. While there are very good benefits of limited use of the natural tobacco leaf, this should not cause us to ignore the very real dangers of cigarettes and their additives. Not to mention the stench.
That said, my guess is that the previous one-star reviewer has not read this book. Dr. Douglass does a good job of presenting some of the fallacies of the anti-tobacco lobby and benefits of tobacco. Read the fine print and you'll find that he also does not approve of cigarettes and their additives or over-use of tobacco. He is quite harsh on the tobacco companies.
Benefits of smoking include the well-known protective effect from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. However, sometimes Dr. Douglass can gild the lily, such as pointing to the combination of higher smoking and lower specific disease rates in Asia compared to the U.S. Even though he ignores the fact to gild his hyperbolic lily, I am sure Dr. Douglass must be aware of the reason: green tea. Even the staid NCI (National Cancer Institute) has reported on the protection that green tea catechins offer from cancer. Investigations have borne out the fact that here in Asia green-tea-drinkers who smoke have lower cancer rates than American smokers, but Asian non-green-tea-drinkers who smoke do not have lower cancer rates.
All in all a good book, and it is good to have a doctor willing to stand up to the fascists, but you will have to overlook the hyperbole.

Smokescreen tells the ugly facts behind what 'big tobacco' has done in this country and abroad. The book itself is a little dry; it reads a little like a documentary. However, what it lacks in style, it makes up with stunning facts and secrets from the industry. If every citizen read this book, the people of our nation would be screaming for a lynching. If you smoke, it may make you quit out of spite.

For Your Own Good: The Anti-Smoking Crusade and the Tyranny of Public Health Review

For Your Own Good: The Anti-Smoking Crusade and the Tyranny of Public Health
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jacob Sullum's book, "For Your Own Good: The Anti-Smoking Crusade and the Tyranny of Public Health" is maybe the best book for anyone interested in the issue of smoking. Sullum, a non-smoker, has taken a logical, meticulously researched look at the smoking issue and come to the heart of the essential problem; the "all or none" approach of the anti-tobacco movement.
Rather than approaching his book as a confirmation for smokers who wish to smoke, Sullum examines all of the essential issues of tobacco use including the health effects of secondhand smoke, the danger of smoking itself, and the comparable danger of both activities in relation to other activities. Sullum gives the specifics of these issues and points out the problems with the broad-brush generalities that anti-smoking crusaders have given to the public. For example, one has a difficult time reconciling statements like "Smoking takes ten years off your life" against "Quitting smoking for ten years will return your lungs to a healthy state". Sullum addresses discrepancies like this and brings the issues into perspective.
Sullum takes a cool and reasoned approach to this book and editorializes only at points that demand it. Sullum wants the reader to know they've come to the right place if they want 'just the facts' and the inevitable logical conclusions that can be drawn from them. In purpose, "For Your Own Good" doesn't vilify the anti-smoking movement, despite its title. Sullum points out early in the book that he found the vast majority of anti-smoking proponents he interviewed to be reaonable and well-worth talking too. It also doesn't give smokers a free-pass to smoke eighty cigarettes a day without any fear of ill health effects. The tobacco industry takes its lumps where warranted, but is equally defended against the wholesale extortion it has been exposed to. The tobacco industry may have spent billions to get millions to smoke, but it is also now forced to pay billions for a campaign of self-incrimination, and even pays out billions for public programs that benefit non-smokers by an overwhelming majority.
In the end, Sullum's reasoned approach makes for a most effective indictment of the anti-smoking crusade. The anti-smoking movement is "all or none" and wants you to hate smoking and oppress those who choose to smoke as a means to ending smoking forever. The political implications do not matter. If a "smoke free society" means the total loss of freedom for those who smoke and the eventual loss of freedom for all, we're going to live our lives as others tell us to, like it or not. The spread of misinformation isn't important as long as it achieves the ultimate goal.
Think of the most zealous of religious groups being given tens of billions of dollars and complete government support for their view. Any individual not expressing total devotion to any of the religious tenets is an apostate to be condemened in public. This view will be expressed on every radio and television commercial break. Any means necessary will be used to express this view. This is the current power of the anti-smoking movement eight years after this book was published.

Sullum covers everything you wanted to know about tobacco but were afraid to ask in 350 pages. Sullum carefully covers his trail and carries the reader on to the next page with the feeling that they've been given the best information available. The history of tobacco and smoking is also covered in brief.
I wish that Sullum would write a follow up or at least an updated edition for this book. In 2005, this book would be an eye-opener for those who have so completely swallowed the bait. I just realized that I'm the first person to review this book in five years. Scary, to say the least.

Stop Smoking for the Last Time: You Can Unlock the Power to Quit Struggle-Free Review

Stop Smoking for the Last Time: You Can Unlock the Power to Quit Struggle-Free
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just finished reading George Wissing's new book, Stop Smoking for the Last Time. WOW! What a breath of fresh air. As a physician and surgeon, I had never heard of anything like this before. It truly shed new light on a common problem that I as a doctor have to deal with on a daily basis. I'm not a smoker, but reading this book gave me so much insight into the mind of the smoker, and even more reason to be kind, patient, and understanding of their true "addiction", which Mr. Wissing states is not due to nicotine. He makes some convincing arguments that it's not so much a chemical dependency that's keeping you addicted, but more of an emotional one that leads to a Pavlovian "habit." His concept of smoking as a form of deep breathing and meditation was what really gave me an "ah-ha" moment for me.
Even if you don't smoke, or if you have other "habits" such as an eating problem, this book's basic concepts can be applied to almost any of life's problem areas. I've already started implementing some of his recommendations into my life, and I'm already beginning to feel better.

The road to true pipe smoking pleasure is neither long nor hard. A good pipe properly filled with carefully selected tobaccos, and smoked with care and skill, will reward its owner with unmatched taste and aroma. The pipe smoker never seeks stimulation through inhaling. On the contrary, the very act of lighting the pipe and smoking it will take his mind off his troubles and induce a relaxed frame of mind. The sole purpose of this book is to help the smoker achieve these rare moments of serenity, which are increasingly hard to come by in the accelerating pace of the modern world.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As I'm fond of telling whoever will listen, I never touched alcohol until I went to seminary. Cigars are an even more recently acquired vice. My older brother got me into Macanudos, and since then I've enjoyed Avos, Buteras, and Arturo Fuentes. I'm even a regular at a Portland cigar bar, where I unwind after a long workweek with tawny port, long stogie, and a good book. I've learned enough about cigars to be dangerous, so I wanted a more formal knowledge base about them. Therefore, I decided to pick up this guide.
"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars" is a fine introduction to the cigar world. Tad Gage has a deep affection for cigars, and he writes in a clear, enthusiastic manner about them. He explains the different types of cigars, the procedure for smoking one, and proper storage. In addition to this practical advice, Mr. Gage reveals the history of cigars, how they are made, and the reality behind the whole Cuban tobacco mystique. He even devotes a chapter to pipe smoking for those so inclined. At the book's end is a rating list of many common brands, along with a mild to full-bodied flavor chart. So far Mr. Gage's tastes have mirrored my own, so I look forward to trying more of his favorites (such as Davidoff and Fuente Fuente OpusX).
I understand that there's a backlash towards tobacco, and one should count the cost before indulging. But life is short, and certain pleasures in moderation aren't a bad thing. It's a shame that my home state (Washington) has banned smoking in public places. I patronized a number of Seattle's cigar bars back in the day, and I miss them. But at least Oregon hasn't jumped on the prohibition bandwagon. At any rate, if you are interested in becoming a cigar aficionado, then start with "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars." Long ashes to you!

The Health Benefits of Tobacco: A Smoker's Paradox Review

The Health Benefits of Tobacco: A Smoker's Paradox
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am only a very occasional smoker, and don't like inhaling other people's fumes. The book raises a lot of questions that need to be asked, and indeed, if you bother to check WHO stats online, there is no clear correlation between rates of lung cancer and rates of smoking. I would like to add my two cents:
1. Bill Dufty's book Sugar Blues mentioned a 1972 BBC documentary that made a connection between tobacco adulterated with sugar and other additives, and additive free tobacco, and lung cancer. Apparently, US makers of cigarettes are not required to list these additives. Virginia style flue cured tobacco is also seen as a possible culprit - it raises the sugar content of the leaf much higher than air drying. Cigar tobacco is often air cured. Many cigarettes are combined air and flue cured tobacco. Russian, Chinese and Taiwanese cigarettes at that time (70's) were made of air dried tobacco, and no correlation between lung cancer and rates of smoking could be found in those countries.
2. I lived in Japan for 8 years. I didn't find the Japanese diet particularly healthy - it consists of a lot of beer drinking and believe in or not, deep fried foods - fried shrimp, oysters, and croquettes are especially popular, and the high salt content leads to mini strokes in the brain and early senility. I also question the so called longevity - I wouldn't be surprised if the Okinawans were taken out of the picture that the death rate might be on a par with the US. Also, Japan has an astronomical rate of stomach cancer - maybe due to the talc they put in the rice to keep it from sticking?
However, it is true that lung cancer rates are lower than the US, even though the Japanese smoke more. Is this due to air cured tobacco?
As for smoking "freedom" in Japan, the government in the early 90's had instituted sanctions against smoking on train platforms, however smoking in private establishments is still in a large part unregulated. There are now smoking and non-smoking sections of restaurants, something which didn't exist prior to the 90's in Japan.
3. I have to wonder why there has been such a war declared on tobacco while commercials advertising both beer and pharmaceuticals seem to have increased tenfold. Moreover, beer commercials are aimed primarily at youth - doesn't anyone consider drunkeness, liver damage and drunk driving to be hazards? Why is this happening? Well, at the risk of sounding goofy, Fritz Springmeier (Bloodlines of the Illuminati) mentioned somewhere that the Reynolds family is on the outs with the other Illuminati families. Maybe the war on tobacco is a turf war between ruling elitists? Why aren't we protecting our children from drunk drivers with the same ferocity? It just seems so strange that we focus so hard on tobacco as a health hazard and ignore alcohol, and pharmaceuticals that can cause sudden death (among other, numerous side effects).

Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilization Review

Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilization
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tobacco is "certainly the most equivocal substance in daily human use," according to Iain Gately. His author photo shows him unequivocally smoking his cigar, and so you might expect that he would go easy on the weed in his book _Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilization_ (Grove Press). For those who think that cigarettes are an unalloyed curse, some of his book will be difficult reading. No history of tobacco can ignore the many social and health costs connected to the drug, and Gately's does not. But American Indians were using it for centuries, and in the five centuries since the conquest of the Americas, tobacco has insinuated itself into every diverse culture; there must be a reason that the killer drug is regarded by millions as a pleasure and a comfort. In fact, there are lots of reasons which the plant has exploited, and so it has a rich and complex history. Gately has researched widely and told the history well.
Tobacco has been part of human culture for about 18,000 years. It was cultivated in the Andes region about six thousand years ago, and only eventually smoked. "That lungs had a dual function - could be used for stimulation in addition to respiration - is one of the American continent's most significant contributions to civilization." The gift of dried tobacco leaves to Columbus in the Bahamas got thrown overboard; no one knew why the natives were getting rid of their tobacco leaves this way. The British took to snuff, in imitation of the fashionable French, but also smoked with pipes like the ones North American Indians used. The British were slow to follow the French in cigarette usage, for they were regarded as "a miserable apology" for the more manly pleasure of cigars or pipes; Oscar Wilde enjoyed horrifying society in many ways, and chain-smoking his effeminate cigarettes was one of them. All the nations of the world showed disgust at the particularly American practice of chewing tobacco and thereupon expectorating tinted spittle. Charles Dickens wrote, "In the courts of law, the judge has his spittoon, the crier his, the witness his, and the prisoner his; while the jurymen and the spectators are provided for, as so many men who in the course of nature must desire to spit incessantly." Modern advertising gets a good examination here; surprisingly, the Marlboro Man was originally no such thing; Philip Morris brought out Marlboros "Mild as May" in 1924, targeted for decent and respectable ladies.
Gately's book has not been edited to be turned into an American version, so American readers will note a disproportionate number of anecdotes and facts from Europe. (An appendix even tells how Her Majesty's subjects can grow the plant in England for their own use.) He has some limp support of tobacco as a guard against such illnesses as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and too often his disdain for the anti-smoking movement is obvious. However, this is a great subject. The effects of tobacco on bodies may be bad, and on society may be bad as well (slavery, for instance, was a New World tradition largely because of tobacco farms), and Gately tells the dark side of the stories well; this is not an apology or an advertisement for smoking, but more of a historical explanation. For anyone who smokes, or who is interested in a world-wide history centered on one particular plant and the uses to which addicted and habituated people have put it, _Tobacco_ tells an important story in an entertaining way.

This is a great book for anyone who smokes a pipe. Rick Newcombe has some very definite ideas about pipes and he shares them with us in 24 great chapters. I find myself going back to the book and reading some chapters over and over again. Then there is the introduction and epilogue by Albert Mendez, both of which are outstanding. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars, 2nd Edition

I've smoked cigars in the past, even expensive ones. But, similar to my journey into wine, I was too shy to walk into a fine cigar store and ask what I thought were stupid questions about size, shape, and even the circumference of a cigar. I didn't know what made a smoke mild or robust, or why I seemed to prefer to the milder ones. In part, its a matter of taste, but as you read this book, you also learn there's a standard for most cigars, and then one can experiment with more robust or even exotic blends. After reading the book I have a great idea of what I want to look for going forward--the country, the style, the length and ring size, and what type of tobacco and wrapper will provide the taste I'm looking for. I've also learned what to pay for a good cigar, and when (and when not to!) splurge for those more expensive smokes.

This is a wonderful little (320 pages) collection of various poetry and writings concerning smoking tobacco, and mainly on pipe smoking, though there are sections devoted to cigars, cigarettes and snuff. What I found to be pleasant about this book is that due to the short length of most of the poems and stories, you can use a bookmark and read 20 or 30 minutes at a time, and then take care of other things and return at your leisure...hopefully with a nice briar full of Cavendish, and continue where you left off. I fully expect this will be a book I will keep in my library and return to again and again over the years.

I have only finished reading the foreword and intro to this book thus far, but it already has provided enough facts, research, and other details that clearly show the great hoax that has been perpetrated on the world regarding tobacco. In just the intro alone, this book contains more than enough evidence of the hypocrisy and outright lies that have been used to justify the unfairness of legislation passed to not just restrict but also to demonize the use of tobacco. And to what end? Take money from tobacco taxes to fund themselves under the guise of concern for public health. This book should be used as the basis for overturning every law passed prohibiting smoking. It's a must-read for everyone who's concerned about their right to smoke where permitted. More later as I continue the reading. This book has as high a recommendation as can be given.

RARE SMOKE The Ultimate Guide To Pipe Collecting sounds like a reference book for pipe collecting. I have reference books on other subjects for collectors. Compared to these other books, I have the following comments on RARE SMOKE. First, this is a reference book that DOES NOT HAVE AN INDEX. The photographs are of low quality. There are photos that are so blurred that one cannot see the detail that they were included to illustrate. The content is very limited. Many manufacturers and models are not included. And dating and pricing most of the limited number of pipes that are included is not possible.
