Julie's Gift: Memories of London Review

Julie's Gift: Memories of London

I just read 'Julie's Gift' written by Kevin Kirsch, a husband who is not a feelings sharer, but through this novella lets us all know (including his wife) that he does have deep feelings. It is a nice light read that may make you look at your unromantic partner a bit differently since it reminds you that just because feelings are not shared doesn't mean they're not felt. The plot is not riveting and you won't find a car chase, but that's the best part. It revolves around a couple's anniversary trip to London, England. The husband admits his idea of a trip is from the couch to the fridge, but goes out of love for his wife. It unfolds from there. The coolest thing about this book is that it was penned in secret by the husband and presented to her as a Valentine's surprise! Julie's Gift has great sample itineraries (how they actually spent their days in London) as well as the author's Top Ten London Travel Tips for the Guys (funny and useful list).
Not everyone is romantic or able to share feelings aloud, and many of those people are men. This book is a thoughtful and dare I say passionate shout to his wife to tell her that even when he doesn't say so, he is happy and lucky to be with her.

27 Lessons To Help You Become A Cigar Expert: The Guide To Learning What You Need To Know About Cigar Smoking Etiquette, Lighting, Cutting, Buying, Spotting Fake Cubans, And Much More

Unless you are an absolute beginner, this book has nothing to teach you. If you are a beginner, there is more and better information on the internet. It is really a pamphlet rather than a book, despite the $9.97 price tag even for the Kindle version. Typical is the "chapter" on the history of cigars, which is a whole five (short) paragraphs long.
The pamphlet is put out by [...]. They evidently value cash over editing, because there are many grammatical errors. My favorite is a self-promotion blurb that reads, "[...] is a new site coming soon with practical information about the fun, exciting, ridicules (sic), and interesting things you can do with a little cash." "Ridicules" indeed.

Signature Tastes of Bellingham Review

Signature Tastes of Bellingham

I heard about this book from Facebook and the many posts about it there. It
piqued my interest and I ordered the book as soon as I could. My biggest
concern was that the recipes would be too long, ingredient intensive and
difficult to follow as a couple of the ones posted on Facebook suggested. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see there were plenty of recipes for
everyone regardless of skill type or budget available. I suggest this book
to anyone looking for an eclectic grouping of recipes to try at your next party.

Reflections in Smoke: A Firefighter's Story Review

Reflections in Smoke: A Firefighter's Story
Average Reviews:

While a true story about people who put their lives in peril to help the rest of us is timely and admirable, this book sadly doesn't live up to potential. Mr. Wright obviously has a wealth of experiences to share, and there are compelling moments in his memoir. However, this rambling tome is in desperate need of a competent editor, something his publisher (1stBooks, a self-publishing house) should revise in their "hands off" policy regarding author's manuscripts. There are unexplained lapses in the narrative, characters appear then vanish, and the whole book just doesn't flow in a manner one would expect for a tale based on actual events.

As I prepare and pack in order to move to the Finger Lakes region of NY state, I enjoyed reading Wine Tour, which further reinforces my love of the area. I have visited a few wineries and look forward to my permanent residence and a greater dedication of exploring the wine industry there. The book is well organized, informative and has many beautiful photographs of the region and its wineries. It is must read before wine touring.

The Great Hill Stations Of Asia Review

The Great Hill Stations Of Asia
Average Reviews:

Crossette's narrative of her journey to a selection of Asian hill stations is much more than just a personal travel journal. She provides an entertaining mix of history, politics, religion, and native lore. The stories in the book are not limited to the hill stations alone, but concern the entire regions South and Southeast Asia. Her descriptions of the unpleasant lowland cities and some distinctly Asian traditions are particularly engrossing. This is a great book for someone who would like an introduction to the area delivered in an easy-to-read format. Those who are already familiar with hill stations and the history of the region may find the book dull. The book is written from an Anglo-Western perspective, with a chapter of rather surprising American flag-waving at the end. Americans will be delighted and surprised by accounts of historical figures' visits to the area, such as Mark Twain's trip. Brits, I assume, will already have some knowledge of the area, its history, and famous characters. The average American will get a thorough introduction to Asia's culture and history and most will be surprised by how interesting it is. On the negative side, I found the meandering writing style a bit disruptive. Crossette jumps from travel journal to political commentary to regional descriptions without smooth segues. While the material is compelling (to someone interested in the region), the inconsistent style gives the book a choppy feel which detracted from my enjoyment. Overall, I recommend The Great Hill Stations of Asia for anyone interested in learning about South and Southeast Asia from an unusual and insightful perspective.
