I read this gripping and meticulously researched historical novel about a British artillery officer who becomes one of Napoleon's top adjutants during the ill fated Egyptian campaign in two evenings. Set largely in Paris and Egypt, we follow Captain John Aston from his return from service in India to his rise to Colonel Edouard Dubois and eventual escape back to England. Winterflood's descriptive powers, whether of the terror and paranoia in Revolutionary France, Nelson's victory at the Battle of the Nile, or the siege of Acre provide a perfect setting for Aston's divided loyalties between the friendships he develops with his fellow French officers, his own half French background, and his conviction that Napoleon must be contained to prevent an invasion of England.
